The assumption is that Datsyuk will be retiring this offseason. That trade saves the Wings 2 mil while retaining a player, specifically a RHD (which Detroit is always desperate for)

The rules for the expansion draft state that players with a NTC don't need to be protected. Girardi's NMC changes to a NTC after the 2016-17 season, and that's when the expansion draft will likely be held
