acquiring 70 point players who are undercontrol for multiple years at a reasonable rate is rarely "stupid"

I don't see how that benefits the Pens, their window to win again is now the next 3-4 years. This would weaken them significantly in that time frame.

this wouldn't be a good trade from a pens perspective, you have a star player and are getting only one guy playing on the fourth line plus extras in exchange? I don't know much about them but going off where you have them placed it would be a terrible deal for the penguins, especially only getting a third in addition to that so your not even getting a lot of long term help either.

It is because Kessel is a 30yo locked up for 3 years that like you said can get 70 points. Poolparty can be a 80+ point player for the next 10 years.

umm a couple of things:

1. Kessel is signed for 4 more years

2. Kessel is actually coming off a 92 point season Tied for 7th in the league, it's the 3rd time he's averaged more than a point per game

3. Puljujarvi had a solid 20 points in his 2nd NHL year, and he could become a 50-60 point scorer for sure, maybe more. But that is a huge unknown at this point. And if he does reach that level it could be for a couple of years.

4. Puljujarvi only has 5 years of team control left so if he does score 800+ points over the next 10 years it very well could be with another team.

5. Seriously though the hyperbole is ridiculous Kessel very well couple produce more in the next 10 years than Puljujarvi

1. Kessel won't get close to 90 points again, ever. Last season was a fluke. He's still great just won't get there again.
2. Kessel is only going to get worse, he's past his prime. Yeah sure, maybe he'll continue to get 70 points the next season or 2 but after that it's going down.
3. Poolparty will be way more than 50-60 point player. If he wasn't in EDM he'd probably already be hitting those numbers. He's only 20, he'll easily hit 80 points at least a 5 times (assuming EDM doesn't ruin another great player).
4. No way in hell will Kessel out score Poolparty over the next 10 years.

Well yeah scoring 90 points isn't easy, few players ever hit it once, much less multiple times. It's also typically harder for non-centers. But Kessel is not past his prime, he's still in the middle of it. There is no reason to suggest he won't be a 60-80 point player for the next 4 seasons he's under control at a reduced rate. Beyond that he still could challenge for 60 points and should still be productive in the 50 point range. Kessel has such a good shot that if he wants to he can be an effective weapon late into his 30's. He might see some ice time decrease, but he should be a sniper and PP ace for years to come. So yeah there is a pretty good chance if he's playing into his late 30's that he'd outscore JP over that 10 year window.

I like JP's potential and upside, but he's clearly not there yet. Maybe it clicks this year, but it could be a slower process. It's impossible to know. He might take a couple of years to really breakout if he does.

Forwards prime years are about 23 to 28 so Kessel is way pass his prime. Yes he'll be a 60-80 point producer probably over the next 4 years but Poolparty could hit that range in 1-2 seasons then hold it for another 8 years. See why this doesn't make sense for EDM?

If you just had a career 92 point season, I'd wager a bet that you were still in your prime. Plenty guys put up huge numbers in their early 30's.

No I don't see why it would be a bad trade for Edmonton, b/c you are treating it like a mortal lock. Odds are that doesn't happen with JP. Not to say he will never get to the 60-80 point threshold, but to say that he will get it first in the next season or 2 and then hold at that level for 8 years after is ridiculous. Only a handful of players ever produce at that level, you are saying that JP is definitely one of those guys?

Yeah he was 7th in points with 92 but nearly half of them were on the power play (42). He had less 5v5 points (41) than PP points. His 41 5v5 points puts him back at 36th in the league. To put that into perspective Tom Wilson only had 9 less 5v5 points than Kessel with 32. PIT has a great PP but PP production fluctuates like crazy. He never had more than 30 PP points in his career then put 12 more this season. Doubtful he repeats.

75 players had 60+ points last season and I'd guess the majority of them repeat that for many many years. So I don't think it's only a "handful" that can do it. Poolparty has all the skills to be a 60+ point player for a looooooong time. Could he not? Sure. It's just highly unlikely. But if I'm EDM I'm not taking a 30yo at the expense of a highly skilled 20 year old that was 4th overall (could have been 2nd). But like I said, EDM is stupid.

It is insanely silly to discount Kessel's value on the PP, having him on it makes the Pens probably the most deadly PP team in the league (to go along with Malkin and Crosby). PP goals and scoring represent a big chunk of league scoring. Ovechkin doesn't lead the league in goals if not for his 17 PP goals (2nd in the league). Ovechkin has had years where nearly half of his goals came off the PP, nobody is thinking of taking away any of his 7 Maurice Richard Trophy's as far as I know.

My point is PP points fluctuates. Kessel, in his 11 seasons before last never had more than 30pp points, then he put up 42. That's what you call flukey. EDM literally had the worst PP last season, you think Kessel gets anywhere near 42pp points on that team? Hell no. McDavid (the best player it the league) only had 20pp points. So a smart team would look at Kessel and say "what does he bring at 5v5, b/c our PP sucks". Kessel is still good at 5v5, but is his 41 5v5 points from a 30yo worth giving up an elite young talent like Poolparty? A smart team says no.

Ovechkin goes from 1st in goal scoring to 2nd if you just look at 5v5. Keseel goes from 7th in points to 36th at 5v5. That's a huge jump. Of course it's good and fine to score on the PP, but when you have more PP points than 5v5 that tells you his point totals are about to go down.
