First, kudos for the interesting ideas...definitely more creative than retreading the line combos.
Hayes is likely to cost more, I'm thinking 5m
Skjei would cost more at that many years, and I don't think the Rangers are ready to commit that much money to him just yet. It's a big dilemma either way!
Id give Spooner another year on his deal, which will cost a bit more. The 2nd year makes him more attractive for a deadline deal.
As a fan who has been ready for a rebuild ever since the loss to Tampa in the 14-15 playoffs (instead of deals made in denial like the Eric Staal trade), I would be OK with waiting for Chytil and Andersson another year if it was for the greater good of the team. Could even mean a chance at another lottery pick and Jack Hughes (yeah right, like the Rangers are ever that lucky!).
I think these are the potential problems with that idea...
A) I just don't think the Rangers org will be able to sell the fans on another year of waiting to see some of the fruit of rebuilding (even if it's still super green), especially after getting them to largely agree to sell off with that letter to season ticket holders. I think a large part of what kept the organization fantasizing about contending and holding the window open over the last few seasons, was simply the idea of selling playoff tickets and hot dogs. If sales aren't being boosted by getting people to come see the "kids", the bottom line isn't going to look real good, and they'd likely get called up real quick. I am sure this was part of the motivation behind their being called up last year!
B) Hartford already has a long list of guys who will play C this season. Adding both Chytil and Andersson to the mix will take important minutes away from Howden. In my mind, Howden should be competing for 1 or 2C in Hartford this season, and Fontaine is going to need minutes for his development as well. If Nieves and Holland don't make the big club, they will be in Hartford as well. Throw in Foggarty, Lettieri..etc...and yeah there's a serious log jam at C in Hartford (which is a good thing!).
C) I don't think having a bunch of rookies hit the lineup all at once is a great idea. I look at teams around the league that are or where recent perennial rebuilders (Colorado, Edmonton, Buffalo, Carolina etc), and imo it can be traced back to 'too many kids being asked to do too much, too soon, without enough veterans sprinkled in'. As the lineup stands right now, Andersson would slot in nicely behind Hayes at 3c, and Chytil (imo) should slide over to the wing where he can focus more on the offensive side of the game (and give the team some much needed goal scoring punch). Meskanen, Pionk and (you pray) DeAngelo round out the list of kids who try to become regular NHL'ers this season.
Next season, Howden, Hajek, Lindgren, Ronning, Day and potentially Kravstov head the list of hopefuls trying to crack the lineup.
The year after you get Igor (fingers crossed), Rykov, Miller, Lundkvist, Barron, Fontaine, Gettinger...so on and so on. As some of these guys succeed (because some are also going to fail), you phase out/trade/move on from the vets you have. If you hold everyone for next year, it's going to be a massive turnover without knowing if any of them are really "ready" to take on big rolls.
