Islanders are desperate to do anything to convince JT to stay in long island. In this trade Lou brings in childhood friend Sam Gagner, Junior teammate with both Oshawa and London Michael Del Zotto (retained) plus a cost controlled starting goalie in Markstrom. Also they move up in the draft and can take BPA at # 7.
Vancouver gets Brock Nelson a big bodied three (almost 4 had 19 goals last year) 20 goal scorer who can play 2nd line center allowing Petterson to start on the wing and move to Center when he is ready. Vancouver also helps out the Islanders by taking on Clutterbuck's contract, who provides a safe environment and leadership towards the Canucks young players. Essentially a replacement for Dorsett who had to retire. Moving Markstrom allows for Demko to make Vancouver and split time with Nilson.
This leaves Vancouver with two first round picks in the top 12, plus also gets back a 4th round pick which they traded away in the Pouliot deal.
As for the draft Vancouver could loose out on the player they want at # 7, but could also get two real good players at # 11 and # 12.
A consensus top 10 for most people at the draft in no particular order include, Dahlin, Svechnikov, Zadina, Tkatchuk, Hughes, Dobson, Bouchard, Wahlstrom, Kotkaniemi, Boqvist.
That would leave Vancouver with the next two picks. If the draft goes in that order use one of those picks on Ty Smith a western Canadian dman who had 73 points in 69 games and also captained Canada at U 18's. Next they could go different ways, but pick a Center so probably pick between Hayton and Veleno. Both are considered very good two way centers.
HOWEVER, all it would take is one of the top 10 teams to really like Hayton, Veleno, Farabee, one of the Russians or any another player. Each team will have different lists and could result in one of the top 10 players mentioned earlier to slide.
Out of the top 10 consensus players I think the ones that might be most likely to slide is Boqvist or Bouchard.
Craig Button was critical of Boqvist at U18's and played against later competion. Bouchard had a great year, however some teams might be fearful of his skating, plus he is one of the older players in the draft.
This could lead to Vancouver selecting two D at 11 and 12
11th Boqvist/Bouchard
12th Smith
This would really add to their defence prospects. If no one slides they still add a high d prospect in Smith, plus one really good center.
11th- Smith
12- Hayton
Something to consider for Jimbo Benning and the Canucks.
