All trades happen in the draft and Hawks select Wahlström with 8th pick. Then Tavares looks our roster and see there's a 1st line center spot open and he could play with Kane, Keith and Karlsson etc and decides to sign with Blackhawks.

That is his current contract. In the trade description, it is stated he would get an 8-year, $11 million per year extension before the trade.
