I think we could offer less since Montreal wants Kotkaniemi that way we could probably do a 3rd rather than the Ottawa 2nd. Other than that I really like the trade.

I don't think Montreal would forfeit value just because they want a different player. If anything, they don't like teams being cheap, and they take Kotkaniemi and let Sens take Zadina.




It makes no sense for Montreal to trade their 3rd overall pick for basically three 2nd round picks. We already have four 2nd round picks including two in that area. Detroit trading up is not a concept that won't happen, its the super fan "give them garbage" take you had that won't fly. 3 for 6+, otherwise there is no sense dreaming.

If GMs cave to weak deals at the last minute every time, no team would ever get a good deal. So yeah, you don't offer the right value to move up to #3, I would rather just keep the pick and to hell with helping out your team. Montreal has 5 picks between 35-66, they aren't desperate to sell low to gain a third round pick.
