who did I underpay? JVR was making $4,250,000 in Toronto and is 29. $4,500,00 is fair value for him.
Matt Calvert wants out of Columbus and he is a bottom 6 guy coming to a Stanley Cup contender not paying over $2,000,000 for him.
Same goes for Ryan Reaves. He is 31 years old and is a 4th line guy to protect Crosby. I think it was a mistake to trade him but I understand it needed to happen to get Brassard.

Also the trades Ekman-Larsson was apparently on the block at the deadline and Arizona would be getting a younger dman in Maatta would still run the power play and be a good fit in Arizona. Same goes with Sheary. I think he needs to be playing more minutes to find consistancy and Arizona fits that.
Jarry going to Toronto allows them to get a young goalie that has played NHL games and has more upside that Garrett Sparks. Also Sparks has spent the last 4 seasons in the AHL and McElhinny who is 34 has taken over the back up role.

JVR is going make over 5 million. some team will overpay him he could make 6 + million a year. and rust for only $900,000 ? undervalued. sheahan who you also undervalued is making 2 million and he had a good season with us, he's getting a little raise. pens aren't brining reaves back especially at over a million just to sit on the bench. now the trades, arizona isn't giving up OEL for anything less than a star player, i think leafs are okay with their goalie situation and i doubt they'd give up a RHD which they clearly need. i could careless where hunwick goes but i don't think LA takes the cap hit, would be better off trading him to a team trying to reach the cap floor like arizona

Those are all fair points. If JVR gets 6+ that will be a bad contract. I think a lot of GM's are a lot smarter and play things more safe now than give out big contracts to guys like JVR. With Rust I think the hometown discount will come into play. He is playing top 6 minutes for us because for whatever reason him and Geno work well together. But because he is playing top 6 minutes doesn't make him a guy you can pay like a top 6 forward. perhaps $900K is on the low end.
Maatta is a star player. Olli being in the shadow of Tanger might make him try to create more or play outside of who he is. When Letang was out last playoff run besides Schultz Maatta was our guy.

somebody will overpay JVR too much money for too many years and then a couple years down the line it'll look bad, unless he takes a pay cut to stay in toronto. if we can get rusty for under a million GMJR deserves an award. but in reality i'd say somewhere between 2-2.5 million similar to the sheary deal but hopefully not 3 million. but maatta and schultz we def our best d men. i'd like to see Maatta focus on offense a little more, he put up decent point totals before all his injuries. hopefully next year letang will be good again and everyone else won't have to do as much

You’re probably going to be right about JVR. If we sign Rusty to $2.5M then I hope Sheary is dealt somewhere. That is too much $$$ between those 2 players. I think Maatta is offensive enough he needs to focus more on the defensive side of the game. I think he would be a great addition to a team who need an offensive defenseman. Like Vancouver or Dallas.
