I'm good with getting rid of Hunwick, but Maatta is ridiculously underrated among Penguins fans.

Look into Alec Martinez’s stats. You’ll like what you see.

Martinez will be 31 before next season starts, and his contract is one year shorter than Olli's. That's a bad swap.

I have looked at his stats. He had two hot years and he's a solid defenseman, but now he's back down to earth scoring-wise and he's crashing into his 30's. Olli has been our best defenseman this year, and very good in all but one season of his career. LA gets younger and better in this trade, and Pittsburgh moves up a round in the draft for an aging defenseman signed for less term than Maatta. It's just a bad trade. You're the one who needs to look at Maatta's stats and explain why you want him gone in a shakeup.

Maatta hasn’t been our best defenseman the last two months. His skating was really good at the start of the year, but now he’s a grandma on skates. Martinez, on the other hand, plays a reliable two way game, with great skating and shot blocking, and who also has a great first pass. Martinez’s contract also fits very well.

Something about the defense needs to change, so what will it be? Letang? Maatta? Certainly shouldn’t be Dumoulin/Schultz/Oleksiak since they aren’t the problem. The problem isn’t even Hunwick or Ruhwedel. The problem is the effort, the lack of focus, the softness. Maatta is the softest defenseman on our team plus he’s also the slowest.

Look at this: Martinez's CA/60 is 63.27, but his FA/60 is 46.30. That means there are about 17 blocked shots per hour when Martinez is one the ice. Yes, a CA/60 of 63.27 is very high, but CA/60.QoT is 55.85 and CF.QoC is 57.51. What this is showing is that Martinez (normally) plays with bad defensive linemates. Martinez also only starts in the offensive zone 33.21% of the time, which could factor into his high CA/60 and low CF/60. Another thing: Maatta has let up 8 more goals than Martinez in 47 less minutes. Martinez also has a higher GF% than Maatta, despite playing on a worse team.

Anything else wink

I'm honestly surprised there are people who think like this, especially when you turn around and use advanced stats in your next post. Where did you pull those numbers from?
