IF that's all it would take to get Karlsson, he'd have been traded at the TDL. He's the team captain and a Norris Trophy contender. If one wants to trade for him, think about what you would have wanted the Blackhawks to get in return for Duncan Keith in a trade 5 or 6 years ago. When you say "no way the Blackhawks would have traded him at age 27...", true. But that's why Karlsson is going to cost more than a middle pair D, a D prospect (in college), and a 1st rd pick.
Am I the only one who's leery of signing more players for long term/big cap hit dollars? I see the Tavares contracts, here above it's Karlsson at age 27, and I keep thinking about the other posts where one is trying to trade the "albatross" contracts of Seabrook, Toews, etc. If they were to trade for and sign Karlsson, everyone realizes in 5 seasons he'll be 32, right? And then will every other post be about dumping his contract in 5 years? They already have salary cap issues so they should add another big contract? I'm not so sure.
Re: Hossa's contract: A 3rd rd pick is probably a little light. Chayka is probably on the hot seat if not already on his way out at the end of the season. He took on the bad contracts for prospects/picks, and this was supposed to be the year it all came together. I think it'd have to be a more NHL ready prospect because if he keeps his GM job, he's going to need to win more games next season. Plus, he did say last summer he had no interest in Hossa's contract.
