Description
Getting Patty-Kadri-Kap line together gives the leafs an actual shutdown line, which they will need if they intend to stop the bergeron line and the stamkos line in the playoffs. Moving Nylander to center gives the leafs more flexibility. Bozak can move down to the 4th line where he belongs, and dominic moore gets replaced by either Sosh or Leivo. That 4th line looks like it could be the best in the league. Meanwhile, JVR gets a better playmaker at center, and connor brown will also get more scoring opportunities. Marner on the wing of Matthews could be lethal, as you put your best passer with your best shooter. A lot of people don't like Hyman on that line, but I think e brings a lot to the table. He takes attention of matthews and Nylander right now because it takes 2 or 3 guys to get the puck away from him in the corner. On D, Gardiner has looked a lot better this season when playing with Heinsy. Reilly has actually played better(possession wise) without Heinsy. Getting a 2 way defender like zaitzev on a pair with Reilly is pretty nice. Polar is the odd man out because he is terrible.

YES Kapanen!!

That Kessel trade seemed to work out pretty well for both sides(even with the 1.2 retained for a million more years).

Ya I really liked the deal, but at the time I was disappointed cause I have always liked the play of Kapanen.

ya he is awesome. His goal last night was great. Would much rather the back to back cups, though

Ya haha that's the most important part of the NHL. His goal should be on highlight real for the rest of the year!

If you include the other trade partners involved with the "Kessel Trade" return from Pitt, the return looks like this (still with the Leafs):

IN
2018 2nd (SJS)
Andersen
Kapanen
Rychel
JD Greenway

Out
2016 2nd
Kessel (1,200,000)
Biggs
Erixon

Not bad...

exactly. Just Anderson and Kap might be a good enough return for that. The second will hopefully turn out to be something. Rychel hasn't blown me away, and i don't know much about Greenway

JD Greenway is doing nothing in College, right now.
Rychel is a gritty player with some upside but not enough to climb out of the AHL, with our depth on the wing.
I think more or less his value to us is actually on the Marlies where he can protect the rookies while still chipping in some points.
I included them as they are still in the Leafs system.

I agree that Andersen and Kapanen alone seem worth the trade, and the 2nd is a bonus.
I honestly justify the $1.2M for Kessel as just part of Andersen's contract.

the 1.2 is no big deal. I don't think it will be a problem in the future

just a correction. the San Jose draft pick was the result of the polak/reimer trade to san Jose a few years ago.

the exchange of draft picks in the kessel were: leafs acquire pens # 1 and 3. leafs sent to pens, the pens # 2 (acquired previously in the winnick deal)

Actually the Reimer trade was the second trade with SJS that year, and looked like this:
TML
Ben Smith
Alex Stalock
2018 4th

SJS
James Reimer
Jeremy Morin

The 1st trade:
TML
2017 2nd (Andersen Trade)
2018 2nd
Raffi Torres

SJS
Roman Polak
Nick Spaling

Most of us pair the two trades together to make sense of it. I left it out to minimize my novel length posts...
