At this point, DAL would probably rather keep Spezza for veteran presence.
And his contract expires a year earlier and at the same time as Seguin.

Jim Nill is a big believer in depth down the middle, so I don't see the Spezza deal happening. This would have too big of an impact on the current roster, which is trending well. I imagine Spezza will play out his contract if the team continues to play well, and Dallas will look to replace the position after next season. The cap hit is too high to trade for the current production, and his value is still better than what would likely be offered in return, just like this offer. Most teams would likely offer 'pennies on the dollar' because the cap hit is so high for what his numbers have been, but I believe Nill will stay the course and hope the vet leadership alongside some decent numbers will take us deep into the playoffs...if not all the way....

I pitched the idea of Spezza for Brouwer before, but the Stars buying Brouwer out in summer 2019. Total cap dollars incurred would be 7.5M for both teams, but Calgary gets one year of Spezza and out from Brouwer's contract sooner than a conventional buyout. Dallas gets 3M in savings next season to add another piece otherwise impossible with Spezza's contract. It's a surprisingly neat fit if Stars want to add something material soon (Karlsson, Tavares, etc.) and Calgary wants to move on from Brouwer (Cgy ownership hates buyouts)

Creative, but unfortunately it likely hurts us this year. Would shake up the lines too much, and chemistry has Dallas looking like a contender. I don't see Nill sacrificing this year for next, even if it could bring a nice player...there are just no guarantees. Good analysis though!

Oh I agree. I don't think this can happen until the summer. Plus Troy's NTC loses restrictions then. I can't see it a fit unless Dallas really wants to make space for a big fish.
