Description
A few notes...

A long term deal with JVR is very unlikely... Leafs cannot be near-sighted on this issue. They need to realize they won't be able to afford him in 2 years and they can get good value for him...
---Jarnkrok provides a long term 3C on a cheap deal. He's only a 30-40 point guy but is great defensively/on the PK and is a great skater. (2018/19 3rd line of Kapanen, Jarnkrok, Brown would be cool)

The Leafs don't need a Doughty or Karlsson on D, but they need to add something. Demers is a guy similar to Polak but younger, better skater, better with the puck (okay, not that similar haha) But he's a Righty who can play the PK, and play up and down your lineup.
We give up Soshnikov (could be Leivo if they prefer) Carrick (who is still a decent 3rd pairing guy) a 3rd and 5th (Don't wanna give up good futures, but in a deep draft like 2018, they hold value)

I believe this is a good plan that might not "swing for the fences" this year, but isn't giving up on the present either.

Love the Jarnkrok pickup, great contract for a 3C. Demers' contract scares me though- if he was on a 1 or 2 year deal maybe, but years 3 and 4 are gonna hurt when looking to sign the kids long term

Jim: there are going to be 90 UFAs this June, why is it that the Leafs have to trade theirs? i just don't get it. and why would Nashville do the deal if Jarnkrok is so great as you suggest (I think he too) for short term JVR?
demers isn't anything special apparently. he has a NTC has seems content to just play out the regular season much like the coyote icon Doan. do you really want him the Leafs for the next three years?

Need more value to Preds for Calle, the Yotes trade is interesting though. I'd make that move at the draft though. That is if he even wants to be traded here.

@ centre, yes there are a lot of UFAs... Backlund, Stasnty, Thornton, Sedin... But every summer is a auction. Everyones bidding and the only (normally) way you win is if you give the biggest number for the longest deal. IF we could get one of these guys for 2 years at a fair price IM ALL IN. but it never happens. Only guy who intregs me is Eller, but he may not want to come
ON DEFENSE: there isn't a lot to choose from as we look for a RIGHT shot D, who isn't just another Gardiner who puts up points and isn't very reliable. Green, Carlson, Gudbranson isn't doing for me

With regards to Demers, you may be right. His best years are most likely behind him, but he's only 29, and has good hockey left to play. whether you like it or not, he also has very impressive advanced stats (namely shot suppression, the amount of shots he gives up while on the ice) BUT i do agree that contract could be an issue. Maybe not tho

I take a look at the available centres...Well Thornton is out with MCL, I don't know if he's a fit. Would the Sedin(s) move, and they certainly aren't the players of old. Backlund might be about the only guy who might come to the Leafs. Leaf fans sure are fascinating with RHD. More important is GOOD Dmen. Zaitsev, Hainsey are playing the right side. Maybe Carrick and Dermot, so it's not like the Leafs are desperate. You are right there aren't really any RHD UFAs that seem to be fit. Maybe Holl makes the jump next year and Liljgren the year after.

I just think going and getting your centre instead of hoping you get one in the summer is being proactive.
And with RHD, its well known Babcock likes playing them on their natural side. Further, pretty much every team does this, with the exception of a few. What if Hainsey regresses terribly next year (possible seeing as hes 37) and liljegren take 2-3 years to make the jump? we're stuck with only Zaitsev on the right side. Again, these moves are simply being proactive.

Yes, there are definite advantages of players playing on their "correct" side. But it certainly has hurt Hainsey. Factually there are many more players are left handed than right handed. So it just may be possible to get that balance in the lineup.
