The first trade is another swap of underachieving players. While Petrovic has often been either a healthy scratch or ineffective for the Panthers his relative Corsi of -1.1 would be the third highest out of all defenseman on this roster. His PDO of 96.7 suggests that he has had fairly poor luck this season, so playing with high end talent could turn around his season. Don't forget that they had really high hopes for him when they protected him from the expansion draft. Florida gets the player with the most upside and experience, not to mention that they've tried to copy the Penguins style of play in the past so this seems like the type of trade they would make. Worst case scenario for the Penguins; this trade gets them out of Maatta's contract. With a salary cap of 83 million next season, they would have roughly 17 million in cap space heading into free agency, and that's with Johnson still on the roster.

The second trade gives them a great four-line attack, the likes of which we haven't seen since the 2016 cup run. Ferland is having a great season and could very well be the type of goal scorer that could help Brassard out on the third line. This, of course, only happens if the Hurricanes are out of the playoff picture by the deadline.
