Pick 25, Korpisalo (25% ret.), Kastelic for ULLMARK
The Senators offloaded their worst contract, and added an elite goalie who will instantly become the most reliable goalie that they've had in a decade, and all it cost was a late 1st and underperforming 4th liner. There is no other way to slice it, goaltending went from by far the teams biggest weakness to a strength with this deal and the team solved it's 2 biggest issues by offloading a terrible contract and vastly improving in the crease.
Grade A+
Chychrun for JENSEN and a 3rd rounder
Presumably Chychrun was not going to sign long term in Ottawa and only had one year left in his deal before he would leave for nothing. He had also struggled defensively since joining the Senators a year and a half ago. As a result, Ottawa trades him and brings in a reliable stay at home d-man who significantly improves Ottawa defensively. Jensen is without a doubt a better fit with the Senators than Chychrun was, being a right shot defensive minded defenseman, who is an ideal partner for Chabot. The team has been trying to add a player like Jensen for a while. However, Chychrun is much better offensively than Jensen, is 8 years younger and is without a doubt a more valued asset than the 34 year old Jensen. Only getting a 3rd round pick to account for that difference in value is not ideal. Jensen is also coming off of a down year. As a result the Senators probably lost this trade. However, the 2024-25 Senators should be a better team as a result of this trade.
Grade B-
Signing PERRON 2 years, 4m AAV
Perron is 36 years old, is coming off of a major down season where he was borderline ineffective at 5v5 and is no longer the offensive force that he once was. He still adds veteran leadership and middle 6 point production to a Sens team that badly needed to improve its 3rd line. Perron is still solid defensively and adds value to the 2nd powerplay unit as well. However, 4 million AAV is without a doubt an overpay for an old player on the decline. Perron should help the Senators and has upside if he returns to his form from a couple seasons ago. Better and younger players signed elsewhere for similar prices (Arvidsson and Duclair come to mind). This is a clear overpay that would have been better spent elsewhere but should still improve the team and provide some qualities that they have been missing
Grade C-
Signing GREGOR 1 year, 863k
This isn't a flashy move but adds some depth to the team and should improve a PK that desperately needed improvements. Gregor is also one of the fastest players in the league and it's nice to see the team add some speed in the bottom 6. This move improves the teams 4th line.
Grade B
Signing AMADIO 3 years, 2.6M AAV
Amadio is a great add to the 3rd line and will instantly be one of the most well rounded players on this team. He is a great defensive forward, solid offensively, can play 3 positions and is a great finisher. He has 30 goals in 140 games over the past 2 seasons and would have finished 7th on the Senators in goals last year ahead of everyone else in the bottom 6. He produced at an almost identical clip as Ridly Greig last year and I expect the value he adds to be similar. He also signed at a reasonable AAV making this a great deal for Ottawa.
