So Holland said he's basically done for the forward group, and will be looking for a goalie and a defenseman. There are two logical targets I think the Oilers should go after: Crawford and Weegar
Corey Crawford, is an old but surprisingly still a very good goalie. Will not be signing in Chicago. Eliminated the Oilers in the postseason so would be ironic to see him as an Oiler. He put up a .917 SV% this season in 40 games, going on a tear after the All Star Break (.927 SV%). According to Evolving Wild's "Goals Saved Above Expected", Crawford finished 4th in the league. Crawford and Koskinen (same SV% and finished 9th in GSAx) would be a very good tandem imo, and excellent in a condensed schedule. Btw, because I know someone will ask, Anton Forsberg won't be our backup. AHL starter.
Next, we obviously are in need of a left handed defenseman since Mr. Klefbom is out for (probably) the season. The Leafs were looking to add Weegar, but since they just signed Brodie, I think he'll be available. Florida is looking to save money so there is a reason for them to trade him, as he's a pending RFA. This season, Weegar put up 18 points in 45 games, which is a 33 point pace over an 82. Looking at his quality of competition, he played 34.3% of his TOI against elites, a very respectable amount (as a comparison, Klef's amount was 33.3%). Weegar was great defensively as well, with a 53.31 GF%, 53.43 CF%, and a 54.64 xGF%. His projected contract is $3.8M x 4 years.
If Florida doesn't accept, the backup plan is Slaeter Koekoek, an underrated dman who had a 54.66 GF% and 52.82 xGF%, both of those numbers better than Nurse and Larsson.
