Bertuzzi scored in streaks for the Leafs but ended the season with 21G - 22A in 80 regular season games. He averaged 16:00 TOI, deployed at even strength and the power-play. Five of Bertuzzi's goals came on the power-play. In the playoff series versus Boston he contributed 1G-3A.
Bertuzzi brings some grit and determination. It's very rare to see him shy away from battling along the wall to extend a play or around an opponents crease creating a distraction and hounding pucks. His production, in relation to his $5.5M salary is debatable in terms of return on investment. He's a pending UFA. If Toronto is where he would like to play in the future, it's difficult to imagine a raise in salary if he is looking for term.

Bertuzzi came to life in the second half of the season for Toronto.
Much more shift to shift impact. Played to his strengths. Extended plays along the boards. Contested opponents physically along the wall and out around the crease.
Capable skater at the NHL level. Leans shooter / finisher more than play driver off the rush.

Bertuzzi is off to an uneven start with the Leafs. He was added to the group in hopes of providing better than secondary offense, and physical push back against opponents.
He has been shuffled up and down the lineup in the last three games, and benched for long stretches.
Monitor the opportunity he gets to reset his game. If provided runway he needs to establish himself in the hard areas of the ice. Battle along the boards to extend plays. Remain on the defensive side of the puck in his zone / don't blow the zone looking for offense until his group has control of the play / and set screens around the crease in the offensive zone.
Needs to play to a reliable identity.
His first ten games resulted in an average 15:26 TOI - 14:05 ES - 1:20 PP
2G - 1A - 12 PIMS - (+1) ... but his ice time has been trending down recently.

A mid-range 2F who has the skill and compete to provide better than secondary scoring
Bulk of his ice time has come at ES and PP. Does not have a history of being used on the PK. The way he plays the game is built for when games get harder in the second half and in playoffs. Tenacious. Goes to the hard areas along the wall and the crease to extend plays and cash on rebounds. Can be a threat off the flank on the PP.
Not a punishing body checker - leans more relentless energy provider / 'rat' - has had some inconsistency the past couple seasons. Very valuable when playing to his max identity
