<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Fotiu4U</b></div><div>I don't expect the Rangers to win a cup this year since they have been rebuilding for years now, so I would not sacrifice young players like Schneider who are the future to try to win a few more playoff games. 99% of Ranger fans would have said prior to the season that just making the playoffs would be a success, so I see no reason to increase that expectation now. I am fine with them being buyers at the TDL, but not if that means sacrificing what looks to be a very bright future. Schneider, Laffy, Kakko, Shesty and Miller are simply not available. Nils Lundqvist and Zac Jones are though, along with Kravstov and the 1st round pick, so there are pieces they can move to improve the top 6. If Vancouver can live with Lundqvist, Kravstov and 1st round pick, then they can get younger and better IMO, but if they are stuck on Schneider, then there is no trade to be made. Rangers can go after Smith in Vegas or Kessel or Tofoli to help their top 6 and keep all their top prospects.</div></div>
OK now non sarcastically thank you for the input, I agree with you 100%. If I were a Rangers fan I think I'd be completely in line with your thinking. I think the conversation changed more when Schneider stepped in to replace Fox and looks an absolute stud already. The only issues with your proposal for me are #1 Kravtsov, just, Kravtsov being an issue himself. #2 we have OEL, Hughes, Rathbone already so to add Lundqvist is a bit redundant. Let's say Chytil, Lundqvist and a first? I personally do like Nils alot (maybe more than Schneider as a matter of personal taste). We also need warm bodies on the team if we trade Miller.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Saskleaf</b></div><div>Fair enough but Eichel was also younger and under contract longer than Miller. And he probably better as well (but it's hard to gauge just how good Eichel is because of injuries and, well, the fact he played in Buffalo).</div></div>
Eichel's value is so strange to gauge. He's also a $10 million contract. Miller has been way outperforming his $5.25 million or whatever it is. I also think people underrate just how good Krebs and Tuch are. Neither Topi nor Rodion have shown anything on North American ice, although I do like both. Krebs and Tuch are both studs and have shown it in the NHL/AHL.

I feel like as Canucks it would be preferable to get Knies and a first, although I like Rodion and Topi. Just to get a player who plays JT Miller's position. That's a strong team. Not sure I'd want my team to move so much stuff for Severson, he has not been playing great this year. If he continues his poorer run of form you're looking at a Nick Foligno type deadline acquisition

Aside from the value though, those are smart moves. Get your centre depth and Reilly Smith seems like he'll be on the move anyway. Turcotte hasn't really shown that he's ready to hunker down a centre spot for a deep playoff push yet though has he?

Save Money Address Age Gap Get Better
The ideas are all really sound. Getting the cap down and getting young talented pieces should be the goal. You're just a bit off on all the value of the players in the Canucks favor in my view (am Canucks fan). Except the NJD deal I think is ok? They aren't far off. I just think with Garland you might get Lysell only. With NYR you can argue Miller for a 1st and Schneider (especially with that retention), but then there's no way Schenn and Motte are worth Kaapo Kakko. Rathbone for Soucy is big brain.

Selling High on Bertuzzi
The issue is your logic is sound and I agree Bertuzzi is worth a ton, but your assessment of Newhook is off. Newhook is also worth a ton. He's not just a prospect anymore, he's a legit NHL talent. If I'm Sakic I'm not sure I'd do Newhook for Bertuzzi 1 for 1, not to mention Newhook is a centre. To add on Colorado's side is just throwing gas on the fire

Yeah I've really enjoyed watching them under Boudreau! My whole thing in this thread is just about being open to whatever direction Rutherford and Allvin take us. If Garland is traded it would be strange but the return better be amazing.

I love the optimism. Florida did have to contend with Bobrovsky's anchor contract. But now Bob is playing well. The key differences are their leaders all came of age at the right time and they are supplementing them with good young talent in abundance.
And as for us being a bottom 10 team by any stretch of the imagination, well, you don't have to imagine it, just check the standings.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BestGMBenning</b></div><div>Jim Benning was always Jim Benning and without failure always made questionable decisions. But like I said. Our forward group is still relatively young and they’ve been playing really well under Boudreau altogether. I also didn’t say Rathbone and Woo were going to push us over the top. They are younger prospects that could fill roles for the team. Which could be good help for us. LHD is pretty much set when Rathbone is more NHL ready and RHD is questionable but some how working right now. But having Jett Woo for the future does help. But for next season there’s about $17M in cap space and the only big player needing a payday is Boeser. But as of right now clearing the cap still makes no sense unless if it helps us for right now and beyond</div></div>
I get what you're saying and I understand the sentiment behind it. You shouldn't be clearing out cap on a young, good value forward like Garland, when you'd likely want to use that cap on Garland's replacement who is at best of equal value.
From my point of view, new management is deciding what kind of team they're working with. If you are looking at moving Garland, it's because they've leaned towards the full rebuild side of the spectrum. If they trade Miller or find a way to move OEL or Myers, mayyyybe they can look at getting the team in contention in the nearer future. Personally, I wouldn't blame them for wanting to build the team "from scratch" in their vision. I'm not saying that's the direction they'll go I just personally have a lot more faith in the vision of the new management if they do decide to go that way. It would suck to watch a rebuild at this point, but like I said, I don't care. I just want to see a cup before I'm gone.
Finally, I don't think we're anywhere near a cup contender if we make the playoffs. Not this year nor next, even with the few minor additions we could afford next offseason. Feel free to disagree with that. I'd love to be wrong, honestly.

If Lou Wasnt a Moron
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Richard88</b></div><div>Worth bearing in mind that NYI only had one year of team control with Toews. He may have insisted on only signing a long-term deal with Colorado if traded and only one year deals to take him straight to UFA with other clubs, so other GM's may not have been so amenable to paying 2 2nd's at the time. I'm just speculating here of course, but my point is that there are realities in these trades that we as fans aren't always privy to that can affect trade value.</div></div>
Totally possible. Maybe he knew the Isles had to let the dominoes fall and they couldn't offer him a top 4 worthy contract. At the end of the day you just have to make those 2nd round selections, and the cap space you free up, count.

If Tampa were willing to do that, Rutherford makes that trade yesterday. Even at $3 million retention, there's just no way. Otherwise some interesting ideas. Let's hope Boeser doesn't turn it around and play like he did last year in your scenario here.

If Lou Wasnt a Moron
Your team went to back to back conference finals and lost to one of the best teams of the 21st century each time... Lou has made mistakes but CHILL.
The Toews trade looks awful in hindsight, but at the time I saw it as more of a slick move by Sakic taking advantage of a tough NYI cap situation. It's also just random luck for the Avs that Toews has just kept on getting better and better. Keep in mind he also plays next to Makar. Good as Toews is, Makar sure as heck makes life easier for him.
I haven't seen Mayfield play this season, but his contract based on his play the previous two seasons was absolutely sensational value. Eberle makes a big difference in the regular season though.

The big problem is that this season was Benning's "all in". Next season we could have made a run at for example Filip Forsberg or a RD free agent with the space we were going to have. Instead, we squished right up to the cap and we're stuck there for the foreseeable future.
With no significant prospects coming in (with all due respect, I love Rathbone and Woo but they look unlikely to be more than solid 2nd pairing guys), how does this team get over the top? The way the money is spread out right now makes it impossible to address the biggest issue with the roster, which IMO is the RD's inability to effectively transition the puck and generate offense.
I don't think we're 1 or 2 small moves away from contention. I just don't see how the team as it's built right now gets there.
The reason Miller and Garland come up in trade rumors, instead of Pearson and Myers, is because teams actually WANT the aforementioned players.
I'd be devastated to see Miller, Garland, or Boeser traded, they seem like great guys and are great players, but I want to see this team win a Stanley in my lifetime and it's going to take tough choices and, unfortunately, even more patience to get there.

Re build the D core part 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lancebmx</b></div><div>Definitely have discussed this a bunch, I also think I was one of the first that offered up Hronek for Horvat. I think it all really depends on who we draft in the first round. If they teams drafts Jiricek or Semec with their first pick then Hronek could be viewed as expendable. If we get a good centre with our top pick then there wouldn't be any reason for this trade to happen. That's at least how i feel about it anyways. I don't want to give up Hronek but in order to get a good piece you have to give up a good piece. If we could trade for Horvat without giving up Hronek would be even better.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ragger_lord</b></div><div>I was just going to write almost exactly this. If Det drafts a good C - no need for Bo. I'd they draft a good RD - trade from a position of strength.</div></div>
Fair enough. Totally get that way of looking at it. I do believe that Hronek is young enough that he makes sense to stay with the team going into the competitive window. Drafting a young RD in the 10-20 range is not likely to yield someone capable of a large NHL load for at least a couple seasons, although Jiricek, for example, at least from what I've heard, is very talented. Same goes with a C.
If Detroit sees their competitive window as starting next year though, I suppose you could add Horvat and sign a depth RD. Interesting thoughts guys

Re build the D core part 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ragger_lord</b></div><div>Detroit - need a 1B/2C. Neither Horvat or Larkin are top end 1Cs but having both is pretty solid centre depth. Especially with their talent on the wing. Can draft a replacement for Hronek while Myers is a stop gap. I've discussed this with Detroit fans and would be willing to only take one second back.
NJ - could use a sniping winger to complement their centre depth. Again, this seems to be a deal that NJ fans are somewhat ok with, depending on the conditions of the first.
Ninja edit to the OP: I think Myers should have 2 mil retained.</div></div>
Detroit - OK, but they have Hronek, why do they want a worse d man and create a need for themselves to draft another one? I get Horvat. Not sure if Stevie Y is going to do a Benning and jump the rebuild too quickly.
Maybe with NJ. I just feel that Severson plays a big role on their blue line and is part of their plans going forward, as opposed to Subban, but.. don't think we want Subban.
Generally speaking I just feel that the blue line we have in Van is fundamentally broken and is going to take pain and patience to fix. I'm not sure there's any way to get there without at least a partial rebuild
respect that you talked to other teams fans though about the moves

Yeah, Poolman must have a negative trade value at this juncture. MAYBE they take Schenn as a depth replacement assuming we want a RD from them. As a Canucks fan, I'd take Fabbro and Svechkov for Miller. That's already basically two late firsts of value. Maybe throw in a 3rd.
