big offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Borocop</b></div><div>Calgary got a super tame return for Hanafin who was going to be in a similar contract spot and was a way way better player this past season. He shouldnt get an 8 year extension from us either because hes not at all a fit, and is by far the most expendable piece on our blueline. He played propped-up, pillow-soft minutes in arizona and put up good but not elite results. His statisitical and analytical profile has him pretty clearly painted as a #3-#4 defenseman on a good team and this year has done nothing but reinforce that.
He also just staight-up wasn't the best defenseman on the PP. He couldn't operate the top of the umbrella because hes a shooter, and he was worse at distributing the puck than Chabot and Sanderson by a big gap. He was a fine shooting option on the PP2 but thats a super replaceable role.</div></div>
1. If we trade Chychrun, the other team will be getting a full season out of him + an extension.
Vegas only got Hanifin for about 20 games before extending him.
2. Chychrun produced more than any other Sens defenceman on the powerplay both per 60 minutes and throughout the course of the season.
IMO, that should make him the best Sens defenceman on the PP.
3. If Ottawa completely flops on trading or extending Chychrun, then Steve Staios is Pierre Dorion 2.0.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>well, we've got all sorts of issues here - first, hope away. doesn't mean it's happening.
and you want to use hanifin as a comp, but also want a first and two seconds? Hanifin got a first rounder two years away, a conditional third, and a depth d man....oh and he was playing fantastic as opposed to a major down year.
This trade is fair is Ullmark can be convinced to extend in Ottawa. I think the sens would be lucky to get a 2024 first, but probably has to hope for a 2025 first. adding two seconds is insane.
elite top four defensemen? first off, what does that mean? elite top four defensemen are called top pair defensemen, and chychrun has not looked like that. the word elite shouldn't be used in the same sentence.</div></div>
I'm sorry you didn't win the Atlantic Division.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>The wheels on the bus go round and round. Both Ullmark and Chychrun have rental rate values as established by every rental. 1st and 3rd unless retention is included. We can wait until the trade deadline to figure that out again.
If Ullmark is willing to waive his NTC to take an extension to go to Ottawa, I could see a deal like this … but it would include Boston taking the negative contract of Forsberg (who most likely gets buried).
I’d assume we’d sign Heinen instead of Bertuzzi</div></div>
I expect any Chychrun trade to include 50% retention.

big offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Borocop</b></div><div>with respect, how do you figure we are getting that much value back for him? Hes coming off a terrible season and hes 1 year to UFA</div></div>
My hope is that we either get a 1st + two 2nds or something like what Calgary got for Hanifin.
And if not, we just sign him to an 8 year extension.
He's only coming off a terrible season because the entire team is coming off a terrible season.
If he was on a much better team than Ottawa or Arizona, he would likely thrive as an elite Top 4 defenseman.
Furthermore, this year was the first year that Chychrun played a full 82 game season.
And he did so while being our best D on the powerplay as well as playing 22+ minutes a night on his offside on a poorly constructed hockey team.
That has to count for something.

Just Do It
In the 2022 offseason, Pierre Dorion kind of "missed the boat" when he went after DeBrincat instead of Marino.
While DeBrincat was traded for the #7 overall pick + a 2nd + a 3rd, Marino was traded for only Ty Smith + a 3rd.

Boston can have Chychrun for a 1st + two 2nds.
Acquiring Ullmark makes sense only if we move one of Korpisalo / Forsberg.

Who we will draft with our 1st whether we win the lottery or not
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>emoprettyboy</b></div><div>Staios seems like such a straightforward and pragmatic guy, I’d be a bit surprised if he wasn’t just going straight for BPA and not thinking any more about it</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>StutzlesNumber1Fan</b></div><div>You are probably right and I hope that's how he approaches it. Just take BPA and figure it out later.</div></div>
The only problem is taking the BPA in the Top 10 once Celebrini is off the board isn't that straight forward.
If, for example, we're picking at #7, you can make the case for using the pick on like 3-5 different players (i.e. Parekh, Eiserman, Catton, Helenius, etc).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>StutzlesNumber1Fan</b></div><div>Do you think Staios will be high on Parekh? I feel like us fans love Parekh more than Staios will. <div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>emoprettyboy</b></div><div>the way things are trending, I’d be pretty shocked if Parekh was available at 9, and wouldn’t expect him there for maybe even 7 and 8</div></div>
Once Celebrini is gone at #1, drafting the BPA in the Top 10 isn't as clear-cut IMO.
Taking Dickinson or Silayev would be very redundant when we already have Sanderson + Chabot + Chychrun + Brannstrom + Kleven.
With that said, if Staios is a defense first minded guy, I can see him go off the board and take someone like Adam Jiricek.
But if he wants Jiricek, he might as well just trade down.

Getting in on the Tkachuk rumors
I find it hilarious that Tkachuk isn't even enough for you.
You want Chychrun as well with 50% retention, thinking he's worth Turcotte + Spence + a 2nd.
Ottawa counters with a 7th round + some spare change for Byfield + Clarke + Kempe + Three 1sts.

The New Direction Changes the core
1. Instead of signing Brannstrom to an extension, we are more likely to trade Brannstrom or leave him unqualified.
2. We are likely to run it back with Korpisalo and Forsberg for 1 more season if we fix our defence.
3. The whole sequence of acquiring Hronek from Vancouver, then signing him long-term and then swapping him for Ekblad doesn't make any sense.

I'm seeing a dire need to sign 40+ goal scorer and Playoff MVP Jonathan Marchessault.
If all it costs to extend Marchessault is getting pickpocketed over a couple of prospects, you make the sacrifice.

The need to sign Marchessault alone erases the space gained from placing Lehner on LTIR next season.
And if trades can easily be made, then they wouldn't be trashed so many times in AGM.
