Best Contracts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CMcAvoy73</b></div><div>Well, if he re-signs. That’s a question now. And any negotiations will be against the entire league, not against an offer sheet. He reportedly was asking for 13.4 on an 8 year deal, so he didn’t have issues signing with term, but he wanted a crazy amount of money. Guys going into a UFA contract always get paid more than RFAs. 5 years was a bad choice for the leafs.</div></div>
He won't be negotiating against the entire leqgue. The moment he can resign they'll get it done. It didn't take long last time and won't this time either. It's pretty clear Dubas knows getting the stars locked up in important and he'll do it again in short order. This whole Matthews is leaving is entirely other fans wanting to see the Leafs burn. Matthews has said all along he loves TO and wants to win here. He loves the spotlight and you don't get a brighter spotlight in hockey.

Best Contracts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CMcAvoy73</b></div><div>I don’t think you can put Matthews in that category because his deal only bought out one year of UFA. I definitely get it with McDavid, because they locked him up for 8 years, but Matthews deal seems kind of awful to me. 3 years would have been great because they would still have his RFA rights. 8 years would have been great because they would have locked up the player to max term. 5 years without really enjoying any discount kinda stinks.</div></div>
When he resigns it won't matter. He took less term for less money. He had no issues signing long term but prior to the pandemic the cap was set to rise and he wanted the same percentage of the cap as other guys like Crosby, McDavid etc and that was more money over 8 years. It's still a value deal, he is the current best goal scorer in hockey.

I think Arizona declines but none of these are bad contracts. Kerfoot is medium and Holl was outstanding this year. The rest are free mid tier prospects.
It's a pile of fine and something teams would be happy to get for a contract they need to move, which isn't Dvorak.

realistic offseason moves
Oleksiak easily gets more than that.
Almost $5M for Dreidger is absurd.
That third line would get killed.
Firing a coach, who has a history of being successfully, after only a year and a half is ridiculous.
Also if you think this is realistic, you thought wrong.

realistic offseason moves
1. The coach has nearly zero blame on this years choke job, blame the PP coach if you want.
2. Driedger has 38 games of NHL experience, what makes him the safety net in goal? and at 5mil.. ?
3. Holl, at this point in time, is more defensively sound than Sandin.
4. Oleksiak is a good idea, I also think Nemeth is better than ppl give him credit (and would be a similar price point).
5. No chance Foligno signs for that much of a discount.
6. Boqvist is a downgrade on Kerfoot at 3C

Start developing and Marner rant
In all honesty Marner is paid about 1.5 mill too much. If the Salary Cap had kept rising as well anticipated it would it wouldn't be as glaring. Matthews was paid about a million too much and 2 years to short on term. So now it is up to Dubas to find an extra 2.5 M in value for free. This is also the final year of Kessel on the books. Another 1.2 million. So it is darn close to 4 million that Dubas needs to find in value in other players to make up for these mistakes, his mistakes or not.
This year we got outrageous value on return for Spezza. I hope beyond reasoning that he comes back. Convincing a player like Getzlaf to sign for a low deal would be of extreme value. I said it at the start of the season that Montreal got the greatest bargain in Corey Perry however. He is a playoff performer.
Resigning Hyman is of top priority. Getting a solid tandem for Campbell. And acquiring yet again another grit type player who can go anywhere in the lineup. Foligno, Coleman, Jenner. Let Sandin continue to try and develop on the 3rd pairing. Brooks should play full time now (so happy about that too!). Hopefully another kid is ready to make an impact. Robertson in my mind has shown zero reason to be full time NHL ready. If other players such as Bogosion and Simmonds are available for cheap deals they bring value as well. Bogo was great for us in the playoffs.

Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sammy_daws1997</b></div><div>The reason a lot of people are using is that the Leafs dont have any qualified defensmen to expose after Holl.. so by the rules they have to expose one of Rielly/Brodie/Muzzin/Holl
My argument is that all it takes is signing someone like Dermott to an extension prior to the draft to allow for protecting Holl.
I havent heard anything either, but the rules are technically that one defenseman who is signed through next year and has either played 40 games this year or 70 games over the last two years in the NHL must be exposed. I assume that as the last two years have been shortened that these requirements will be changed to "27 games this year or 54 games over the last two years".</div></div>
Yes, the requirements have been changed to 27/54. And you're right that Toronto can simply sign Dermott to an extension or Bogosian to a new contract and expose him in order to meet the "one qualified defenseman" exposure rule. I fully expect Toronto to do that and protect The Big Four forwards to go 8-1. We'll see if I'm right.
