Opening Night 2024
it makes way more sense to keep Domi as a 3C for about half the cap hit compared to Wennberg.
Kampf is low enough cap hit and good enough player to keep as a bottom 6 C option, especially when injuries pop up

Whatever you want to label it, Tavares has a very nice role on this team still.
Matthews line will draw the tough matchup from the other team, Domi's line will match against the other teams top line. Hopefully that means JTs line can be free to match up with the other teams 3rd line, which is a matchup the Leafs usually like. I would still pair him with Nylander for this as well, since Willy isnt exactly a defensive specialist.
If I were coach I like these lines personally.

Yes, he would be a difference maker for the Leafs in theory since they lack high end right shot defensemen (Liljegren is the only one in the system)
Is it better to sell the farm for Tanev than to move a guy like Jake McCabe to his weak-side for free? Probably not..

Agree completely, except that Hanifin is not a 2nd pairing defenceman..
He would actually be a perfect top pairing #2 to play the left side with McAvoy tbh.. A Devon Toews to his Makar if you will...
Boston would have one of the best top 4 groups in the league if they brought him in imo.

Could be perfect. It is an apples to apples replacement for Klingberg (other than stylistically lol) and with another cap increase expected this summer there will be more flexibility to sign Dumba to a multi-year deal if he proves himself down the stretch.
From what I can tell, he has never been the same since coming back from his ruptured peck in 2018.. I imagine that is not an easy injury to rehab for hockey players since you use your pecks extensively when shooting or passing. Who knows if he can ever get back to his pre-2018 form again though

How would Boston theoretically replace the two roster positions they emptied here?
Not only are Poitras and Beecher roster players, they are young assets too! Then you add in Bostons first, making it almost impossible for them to be able to make any other trades to fill the holes left by this..
Not a good trade for the Bruins imo.

Idk if you missunderstand the original quote. Obviously none of them will get Andersson in a 1 for 1 trade..
Minten + Lilly + Holmberg would likely get it started, with the leafs potentially needing to add picks.
First of all, Andersson is not a "sweetheard" contract. I would consider it a fair value contract.. I wouldnt want him any more than I would want players like Chychrun, Pesce or Girard, on their current deals and all of whom are on similar contracts.
I would also argue that Andersson isnt a true top pairing defensman. He fits more as a #3 or elite #4 on most contenders just like he is for CGY tbh (although would likely be top pairing in TOR by virtue of being a RH shot)
Great player, but he seems like he will stay in CGY for a long time imo. The kind of player every team needs, but no team is willing to trade away unless its an expiring contract or a huge overpay to get him.

Marner to Columbus
TBH as a Leafs fan I wouldnt even love that trade, even though it addresses most of our needs.
Laine is not a player I want to get involved with atm. Nothing against him as a person or what he is dealing with currently, but when you combine his cap hit with his inconsistency over his career you would certainly be looking at the next Leafs scapegoat.
The other 3 players are all great obviously, but we cant assume Merzlinkins is even an upgrade on Samsonov at this point.. For arguments sake lets say that it is a wash. Jirecek is elite obviously, but he hasnt exactly reached his ceiling yet so the Leafs would be taking a short term downgrade at RHD (their weakest position) for a long-term upgrade (Plus he would be due for a contract in 1 season...), which doesnt really fit with their timeline...
Jenner would be great, but he doesnt move the needle enough to offset everything else imo, and he is getting up there age wise.
The trade value may be equal, but in terms of team fits I just dont see this trade making sense

I just dont think the improvement from Lily to Andersson is worth Minten or Cowan straight up, let alone with additional picks or players going back too... You are probably spot on that this is the trade value that would be needed, but I hate it for both teams tbh.
This is just not the right trade for the Leafs at all imo. If they insist on adding a RHD, they will have to limit their search to expiring contracts so the cost doesnt get out of control. I also hate the idea of moving Lily when we currently only have 1 RHD capable of a top 4 role...

Leafs have the assets, its the appetite they rightfully would lack like you mentioned. I imagine (Minten or Cowan) + Liljegren + picks would get this done. The only issue is that they would be giving up one of their top prospects (Minten or Cowan) and picks for a upgrade to our RHD.
Is the difference from Liljegren to Andersson even more than Minten or Cowan without the picks?

Probably a non-starter tbh.
The Flames would be down to 1 right shot defenseman (Tanev) and they likely will move him anyways.
The ask would have to involve either Cowan or Minten imo, which the Leafs have said is off the table currently. Andersson also has 3 years left at a friendly cap hit, plus the Flames seem to love him.

Its possible in theory
It is possible, but not with that return for Chicago.
This trade would handicap them from making any additional moves to take on Cap and gather more draft picks like most basement teams tend to do. For them to keep $10.5M in cap they would need much much more than a middle pairing D, two B level prospects and a 1st round pick.
This trade would start with Sandin + Knies and at least one 1st if not two..

Karlsson
Honestly, as crazy as this sounds with that kind of return, I don't like this trade for SJ
Yes they get Barrie + 3x 1sts + 2x 2nds, but they are on the hook for $5.75M for the next 4 seasons still from Karlsson, are going to take 1 more season of Foegele at $2.75M, and the two prospects sent from Edmonton are C level prospects at this point (putting up 0.5 ppg in the AHL over multiple seasons isnt great)
SJ is essentially only getting the draft picks (3x 1st and 2x 2nds) in exchange for a downgrade from Karlsson to Barrie at essentially an even cap hit and taking on the Foegele contract.
Thats $8.5M in dead cap hit next season and $5.75 for the next 3 seasons after that. Do you know what kind of player you could get for $8.5M? Just for reference, Cale Makar (a 22 YO coming off of a Stanley Cup and Norris) just signed for $500k more than that...

We have no idea what "Close" means in this context. Dubas could have agreed to everything except Knies and was working on including a different prospect(s) before the deal fell through.
By all accounts, the Leafs and Dubas are very high on Knies and are almost unwilling to part ways with him unless the return is significant. By most accounts Knies is a top 25 prospect in the NHL overall and in a shallow prospect pool, such as what the Leafs have, he is even more valuable of an asset to have.

First of all, Knies was less valuable last year simply due to one less year of development. He has now shown promise at the NCAA level over two seasons as well as at the USHL level.
Second of all, what you left out of last years trade rumor is that CHI was going to take Mrazek's cap in this trade as well. Dubas ended up moving Mrazek for very little, all things considered, but at the time the rumors were that it may take a 1st just to move his contract (similar to Marleau).
With eveything else that has changed since last season, I dont think this specific trade would interest the Leafs this year, but I have been wrong before. Especially when we consider that the hope is that Sandin turns into a Chychrun level player over the next 2-3 seasons.

This is a best case scenario for AZ if they are trading with the Leafs. I dont think this is quite on the table though.
I suspect if Knies is included then Sandin stays, or Knies stays and its something like Sandin+Voit or Sandin+Robertson instead.

To recap Cap Friendly this morning
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Theozler</b></div><div>You can’t just magically make cap room appear. So while teams would love marner , is it worth destroying your depth for him?
As for the wingers, few arguments: all three of those wingers won hart trophies so they are a level above marner. Also let’s look at the team around them: hawks, really the only true exception so I won’t go over them Capitals, ovechkin best player but they never got over the hump until they had two top centers, prior to that they were out round 2 or less every year. Tampa: one, vas is their best player, he just is. And they had comparable stars at c and d. So really outside of Chicago you needed the c and/or d to win the cups. Pens: malkin Crosby, wings: datsyuk, zetterberg, lidstrom. Bruins: Bergeron, krejci, chara, Thomas. Kings:kopitar, doughty, quick. I mean we can go back to the 50s, there are teams that have won with maybe a very good w, but the almost always had better or comparable stars at c,d, and g. But there’s many examples where they had clear stars at the other three positions and the w was maybe their 5th best player.</div></div>
Firstly, I was mostly making a point about how wingers absolutely can be the top stars on teams. It wasn't necessarily to say Marner specifically is able to be the top star of a cup winning team, although I do think he is personally.
Ovi is the only one who won a Hart earlier in his Career than Marner is currently. Kane won his at 27 and Kucherov at 25, meanwhile Marner is 25 and is definately within the realm of winning a Hart if the stars aline (one thing going against him is that Marner success will usually equal Matthews success). I wouldnt say that Marner is a tier below those guys just because he hasnt won a Hart. FYI, he has averaged 102 points per 82 games since his ELC. Kane averaged
In terms of the team around them, it doesnt matter what position the best player is since you need a well rounded team to win in the NHL. You show me a good cup winning team and I will show you a good C and W pairing. Mackinnon/Raantanen, Stamkos/Kucherov, Backstrom/Ovi, even Toews/Kane.. The only exception I can think of is Crosby tbh.
I think something that I should say as well is that sometimes a high end winger will make a good center look great. A final point I will make too, is that I purposely left out that defense isnt important. Defense is by far the most important thing in winning cups imo. I think this can be seen by the Cs you listed that didnt really have elite wingers. Datsyuk/Zetterberg, Crosby, Bergeron, O'Reilly.. They are all defensive centers. The teams that did have elite wingers also had elite defensmen to compensate. Kucherov/Hedman, Kane/Keith, Ovi/Carlson to an extent..
When I say that any team would make room for Marner, he is a top 10 player in the league so most teams getting him would be sending back their best player. No need to make cap room. In hindsight, I will revise my statment, since after thinking about it Edmonton is probably the only team that would not be interested in a Marner trade. So 30/31 teams would be happy to trade for Marner if he were available.

2023 WJC Team Canada Predictions
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dls9</b></div><div>I think the best thing for Shane's development would be to go back and play one more year of Junior.
He had 1.5 years of Junior Development ripped away from him because of covid restrictions. He had his WJC ripped away from him because of covid restrictions. I really think the best thing for his development (and also, for him mentally) is to go back and play one more year of Junior/WJC/etc.</div></div>
If you look at his progression over the last season, he caught up quickly. He has a mature size as well at 6'0" 200lbs.
He also only missed 1 year of OHL too, not 1.5 like you mentioned. He has played 121 out of a possible 136 OHL games over two normal seasons. Most draft prospects play less than this when you account for the time missed for the WJC and minor injuries.
He is done with the OHL and it would probably stall his progression if they were to send him back. Ideally, he would spend a year in the AHL but that isnt an option.
One possibility might be to have him play in Seattle until Christmas (about 30 games) and then let him go back to play the WJC and finish the year in the OHL. This would give him the development in the NHL, while also giving him the chance to gain the experience of winning at multiple levels (in my mind he would be traded to the OHLs top team loading up for the Memorial cup). In a perfect world he could even come back to the NHL at the end of the year if Seattle makes the playoffs somehow.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Theozler</b></div><div>Ok, but you’re missing the other side where it’s extremely undervaluing a guy like weegar.
Here are the issues with the guys presented:
Marner:great player, salary very difficult to move and paid at a rate where he is your top star. Very rarely do you win with a winger as your top star, typically it’s c, d, or g. Position just doesn’t have the effect of the others.
Muzzin: a.ntc b.flat cap makes deal hard to move to a team that would be needing a player like him at his age. Rebuilding squads simply won’t give assets for him.
Tavares:over 30, huge contract, and again wouldn’t waive anyway. If he did, flat cap would make it impossible a team that would want him to acquire him. Rebuilders would not want to give the assets.
Holl:probably gets a couple mid picks. But he’s constantly used to acquire much better defenseman on here which is rubbish</div></div>
Every single team in the league would make room for Marner at his Salary.. to say his contract would be tough to move is crazy..
You say "You rarely win with a winger as your top star" meanwhile you have Kucherov, Ovechkin and Kane who have been the top stars on 5 of the last 10 cup winners...
You are clearly blinded by your Leafs hate.
Also,
The leafs will happily keep Muzzin and move Holl instead if Muzzin doesnt return assets. He is still a quality top 4 defensman and only has 2 years left on his deal. The leaf's don't need a ton of cap space and have multiple options of obtaining it.
Tavares is literally producing the same as he has essentially his whole career. He has always been roughly a point per game player. Is he overpaid? Probably slightly, but he would still fetch $8M-9M on a 3 year deal if he was a UFA today. Again, most teams would give assets if he was available.

Doesn’t mean they don’t have value, but TOR is trying to shed their CAP hit so they can re-sign Sandin and sign other FAs. That is the literal definition of cap dump lol.
If it wasn’t a cap dump, teams would have reached out and inquired by now (as they did with RM). Teams don’t want to give up assets and picks for an injury prone D making that kind of money.</div></div>
Sure call it what you want.. I do have some responses to your comment though..
Firstly, neither you or I have any knowledge of whether teams have reached out regarding Muzzin, so relax.
Secondly, every report I read regarding McDonagh said Tampa had canvased a few teams and got a commitment from Columbus to claim him on waivers should they waive him (Tampa inquired not Columbus) and then they made a trade with Nashville (again, Tampa inquired).
Muzzin is still a good defenseman in this league and the leaf's will happily keep him if they are unable to move him for assets. They are under the cap with a full roster, so they just need to move someone of equal value to Sandin once he signs. Holl would also be enough based on the expected contract Sandin will get.
