I'm not sure the Leafs want Chiarot at all. He plays the left side and the Leafs already have Rielly and Muzzin locked in with Sandin in line. Muzzin isn't going anywhere (NTC) and Rielly is definitely better than Chiarot. Seems like a waste.

I see that you're saying...but having extra bodies that are NHL capable isn't a bad thing. Camp will decide who starts, that doesn't meen the other guys are gone. If you get into injury trouble, you don't want total greenhorns coming in the fill the holes.

Why should the Habs rely on Dvorak? He's a middling 2C who has never shown the ability to drive his own line and relies heavily on his wingers to do all the heavy lifting. Hell, Dvorak barely outscored Ritchie last year despite getting significantly more minutes and power play time.</div></div>
There's also the fact that if not for Dvorak, their 2nd best centerman would be Jake Evans...who played a total of 60 NHL games, mostly on the 4th line.

They publically said they want to load up on picks. They're not gonna trade them away now. That's why I included their top 2 centers, their top Dman (elite) and their best kid (Hayton). You're essentially trading Matthews and Kerfoot (3C) for the 4 most valuable players on the Arizona roster. I know Matthews is extremely valuable but I think you're grossly under-estimating the quality of the players returning, all being on reasonable contracts.....especially Chychrun. He's better than Rielly and is signed to less money for many more years.

Matthews did himself the dirty when him and his buddies harrased a security guard in the middle of the night. That's why he's not captain. Beeing the most gifted player doesn't automatically make you captain.

Not with his own specific abilities. But getting much better depth and huge upgrade on D would help drastically in different ways. Seeing Dvorak and Marner back together in the NHL would just be tons of fun as well.

True. I shoved him there simply because bringing in Chychrun makes Rielly dispensable. Could easily be Chychrun/Brodie, Muzzin/Holl, Sandin/Dermott.

Because his hometown team needs him to be able to pay their bills. It's not because I want to trade Matthews but more because Arizona will lose their team if they don't sell more tickets and they just happen to be in selling mode. It's just business, taking advantage of a rare situation. Did you not look at the lineup?

100%. 4 lines that can contribute is ideal, but let's not pretend they are all equally capable of contributing. For them to hoist that cup, they'll have to get the best out of their lineup, and that goes for any team. I just really don't think rolling 4 equal lines with equal ice time is the right way to get the best out of this team the way it is structured today.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Barilko14</b></div><div>I'm factoring in PP time for those 2 as well. Nights when Clifford was getting 7 min per night, he wasn't on any special teams.
Also, this may not be the season to roll Matthews and Marner out there 22+ min per night, considering it will be the most condensed sched they'll likely ever play. There will likely be months with 15+ games.
IMO, you are taking a sizable risk if those guys play as much as they did last year (if 21/22 is back to normal, I'm fine with them playing big min again).</div></div>
Alright, if you average out the top 6 as 20 minute players (average), that still only leaves 10 minutes as an average for bottom 6 players. Regardless of special teams, there's still only 60 minutes in a regulation hockey game...and penalties fall into those 60 minutes. There's exactly 15 minutes (all situations) in regulation for the average forward, 20 minutes for defense.

You might be right, but there's only so much ice time to go around. What would then be the purpose of having 3 guys making double digits if they're only playing 18-19 minutes per night?

I agree with all of this. The only reason I have Robertson there is because I don't think they would withhold him from the WJC just to play 10 minutes on the 4th line. So I think he'll end up a middle 6 guy, trading places depending on performance with Simmonds and Mikheyev...those 3 are a toss-up as far as lineup up. Will all depend on fit with linemates.
I have feeling that this can be true for several players at the bottom of the line-up.</div></div>

You’re completely missing the point here. The point is both will be signed and included in the roster. The roster is what it is regardless of the cents involved.
Also ironic that you said my estimate of Mik salary is an overpayment and only hours after he signed for almost exactly what I said he would.

Kyle Dubas in an interview with the Toronto Star:
On the weekend, Leafs GM Kyle Dubas said he was confident the Mikheyev arbitration would work out favourably.
“Whether we have to go with a 20 men on the roster to start (instead of 23), or sending guys down to play for the Marlies rather than sitting out for us … it doesn’t appear that we’ll need to move anybody else out,” Dubas said on a conference call. “We’ve got the arbitration case with Mikheyev on Wednesday and then subsequently we’ll get Travis’s situation rectified and taken care of. But, at this point, we don’t anticipate having to move anybody out.”

As "overpayment" are you refering to my pretend numbers for Dermott and Mikheyev? Mik has an arbitration meeting tomorow....Dubas isn't picking his cap hit. Team offered 1 while player countered with 2.7. Arbitration result will meet half-way as it usually does.
Dermott's closest comparison is Holl who signed for 2x3 last year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>Vets cant be sent down, (well they can, but cant come back (waivers) ) and there isn't any youth nearly as good as they are.
Its a pretty thin lineup that has no cap space for even a 1 game injury. Its also a much older lineup, even before the Thornton signing. Less speed. and I have no idea who plays PK. Truly, its almost historical that you have some 3rd/4th liners who play PK, but in this lineup? Kerfoot, Mikheyev, Engvall? I don't see 2 way players on those 3rd/4th lines. This is a thin, older lineup designed to exhaust itself long before the playoffs. With Spezza, Thornton and Simmonds its almost guaranteed they wont play an entire season, even shortened.
All of which leads to the fact that another move has to be made.
Ive seen a lot of these 18 skater lineups for the Leafs, (because its the only way they stay under cap), and its just so unrealistic. There are rules that just don't allow you to carry players that don't count against the cap</div></div>
Dubas himself said he has no problem carrying a 20 player roster if need be. And it's not that they would carry players without them counting against the cap, it's that sending players up and down is much easier when your AHL affiliate (Marlies) play in the same city. As long as the transaction is made before the pre-game roster reports are given in, the player can make it to the game, no flights needed.
The waiver wire is also why I kept all the vets in the official lineup while sending down the kids. The kids can go up and down without issue.
As for making other moves, I'm only basing myself on what Dubas himself said about the roster. He said Mik and Dermott would be signed and then that's pretty much it, no more transactions. Weather you say they need to make other moves or not really doesn't matter when the actual GM of the team said otherwise.
