Seattle Kraken signed Ryan Donato (1 Year / $750,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SevenLeg</b></div><div>They better start dealing some forwards if they don't want to lose them on waivers.</div></div>
Every year people worry about this with [insert team with too many players] at [insert position] and it almost never happens. Two or three players at most, usually goalies, get snapped up during the pre-season roster crunch to get down to 23. Best waiver add in past few years has been Rudolph Balcers, which kudos to the Sharks, isn’t saying much.
The thing is, teams would then usually have to waive a player of their own (or take away a spot from a waiver exempt player who needs ice time in the NHL). What 14th best forward or 8th best defenceman on any team would YOU pick up on the waiver wire knowing you have to drop another player off your roster?

Calgary Flames signed Brad Richardson (1 Year / $800,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Roysboy72</b></div><div>Richardson goes on! He’s getting older, but maybe he can still be of use to an NHL squad. Surprised to see he’s getting signed before some of the other remaining free agents, though.</div></div>
It’s true as there are 3 other centres with more upside than Richardson. Only thing I can guess is that Zajac, Bozak, and Staal aren’t willing to sign (yet) for league minimum (or $50k above). That or they aren’t willing to accept a 4th line role.

He won’t be worth it for Y1 and maybe Y2 but by the end, the value in his prime will more than offset that.

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Louis Domingue (1 Year / $750,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CrossFireX33</b></div><div>I see the penguins have gotten serious about fixing their goaltending issues</div></div>
He was arguably the best UFA goalie available.
Rask is a UFA but a) injured til 2022 and b) wishes to retire a Bruin - so isn’t available by any definition.
Dubnyk has never been an elite goalie and his play has fallen off a Cliff - or two - the past 2 seasons.
McElhinney was a solid NHL back-up til he ran into Father Time last year & will be lucky to get a PTO at this stage (although Craig Anderson got signed so who knows).
Jon Gillies has played a few NHL games and may have back-up potential but at best is a 3rd stringer after a rough season last year.
Other than that you have goalies that aren’t ready, and likely never will be ready, to play in the NHL:
Artyom Zagidulin
Jeremy Helvig
Evan Cormier
Cole Kehler
Jake Kielly
That’s it. Given what’s available - they’d have to give up assets in a trade or sign Domingue for league minimum.

Buffalo Sabres signed Casey Mittelstadt (3 Years / $2,500,000 AAV)
It’s not as good as Jokiharju, given the comparables, but it’s far from a “bad” contract. If he continues to improve, he’ll likely outplay the value of the contract by Y3 if not sooner.
The question is whether it’ll be in Buffalo. Whether he gets traded or whether the Sabres will be in Buffalo. Who knows anymore.

For all the ppl worrying about how they’re going to pay for it, take a breath -. It’s an extension. There’s literally nothing to pay this year. No money down, no interest til 2022.

In order to hang up one’s skates, one first has to be able to *bend* their knees.
Unfortunately for Jumbo Joe, and us, this means he’ll be playing forever.
Beards are not mullets. And Jagr he is not.

I voted “no”, not because the Cap Hit is too high but because it walks him straight to unRestricted free agency in 10 months time. He could be the Zach Hyman of 2022.

The final legit Top-6 player gets signed (assuming Palmieri has signed, if “unofficially”, with the Islanders).
With all the truly NHL-calibre D-Men and quite literally all the goalies (not named Rask) signed, UFA season has come to an end earlier than I ever recall. What a wild week!

Columbus Blue Jackets signed Zachary Werenski (6 Years / $9,583,333 AAV)
I love Werenski, I think he’s and dynamic D-Man with a fantastic shot. With that said, I voted “no” as there is almost no way this deal turns out to be good value.
If he continues to play at his top level and stay healthy then it’s a break even deal. So literally there’s no way this turns out to be a “good deal”.
I suppose the intangibles - like having a possible UFA stay in Columbus - could be worth something. I’m grasping.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>Didn't realize he was still around the NHL/AHL. Good for him</div></div>
Yep! Captain of the Griffins for 2 years, Alternate since 2015. Over 500 games played with them. Considering the fungibility of AHL players, and the veteran limit rule, it’s actually tough to stick around that long in the AHL.
Likely won’t be seeing many games with Detroit - a couple perhaps to get some extra money for him (otherwise why sign him to an NHL deal instead of an AHL one).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>irgids</b></div><div>Yes, I was clearly talking about the Calder Cup.</div></div>
Winning is winning - whether it’s the Stanley Cup, the Calder Cup, Gagarin Cup, Memorial Cup, Olympics, World Cup, World Championship and so forth. Moore just helped Canada win Bronze (with an inexperienced roster) at the World’s, he’s won an NCAA championship, and of course the Calder Cup team he was pivotal on.
He’s the workhorse, tough minutes, forechecker who is essential to have on a championship.
He’s definitely missed in Toronto - I wonder if we’d kept him and guys like Connor Brown & signed the big guns for a bit less if things would be different.

Philadelphia Flyers signed Samuel Morin (1 Year / $750,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Roysboy72</b></div><div>Things don’t look too good for Morin. Former 13th overall pick and he still hasn’t had a salary as high as his entry-level deal.</div></div>
True (tho he did go 11th in 2013). That said, he’s still with the team that drafted him. The only other 2013 1st rounders still with their drafted teams (tho this may soon change) are:
MacKinnon - COL (#1)
Barkov - FLA (#2)
Monahan - CGY (#6)
Nurse - EDM (#7)
Hotvat - VAN (#9)
Morin - PHI (#11)
Morrissey - WPG (#13)
Pulock - NYI (#15)
Usually, by 8 years, 1st rounders are either:
a) established with the team that drafted them (a la Barkov)
b) established on another team, after bringing in a haul in a trade (a la Seth Jones)
c) no longer on NHL contract/in Europe (a la
Kerby Rychal)
Morin is the exception and sorta feels like the 40-year-old-virgin version of a hockey prospect.
Edit: added Horvat; subbed Dickinson

Florida Panthers signed Sam Bennett (4 Years / $4,425,000 AAV)
Rish/Reward as others have noted. But I think it’s smarter to take a risk on a player who they know works well in their Top-6 rather than taking a shot on a UFA later this week who they don’t know will fit in.
Moreover, Bennett is a Top-5 pick so he has the pedigree to suggest that perhaps his play from last season, while certainly aided by PDO puck luck, may not regress fully to the levels he experienced before.

Granted they had a lot of picks to start with, but since the March trade deadline MTL has sloughed off 5 2021 draft picks, in exchange for players and for future draft capital.

Agreed. And in 2022 the players will be better scouted so less likely to find players that may be successful this late in the draft.
It will be interesting in 10 years to look back and see how this draft shakes out against others. My bet is we could see some weird things, like more 4th rounders be NHL regulars than 3rd rounders. It’s a crapshoot and most GMs know this at this point.

(MTL/MIN) - 4th for 5th, 7th
A 7th (#214) to move up 23 spots is actually a good get for MInnesota. In a regular draft year, with greater certainty in the quality of players, you wouldn’t usually see a 7th allow a team to move up this much, at this point in the draft.

Methinks the Canes have a strategy? In a draft with greater uncertainty than ever before, more lottery tickets seems like the way to go.

Colorado Avalanche signed Cale Makar (6 Years / $9,000,000 AAV)
Makar is great. And while he’s worth $9M by the current market (especially after the Jones signing yesterday), is it the best way to build a winner?
We see Toronto with huge sums dropped on a select few people and they’ve not reached a conference final even yet. Perhaps a lot of really good players is better than paying your biggest star?
It’s a good deal, but I wonder sometimes.

That’s certainly a major reason. But if it was “just for the expansion draft requirements” then why sign him for 2 years?
