All good lol. I'd take Bertuzzi for sure - although probably not at the price people on these forums think he's going for. I think he's fairly similar to Zucker. I agree it wouldn't be a significant upgrade - more just like a change of scenery type a deal. Zucker has age and injury worries too we need to think about.
If we take your scenario though and trade Guentzel for Toews and then can trade for Ehlers and sign Bertuzzi - I think you would be able to keep the top 6 production while also making the defense way better.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pensfan21</b></div><div>We could potentially trade the 1st for a replacement. 2 of Necas, Ehlers, Lafreniere, Bertuzzi, Kuznestov would drastically help the top 6. I would even consider getting Kuznestov for 2C and having Crosby play on a line with Malkin. I think that would be awesome to see. Just trying to get creative with all these ideas.</div></div>
True - they could. Would it drastically help the top 6? I assume you're saying pick 2 of those guys to replace Guentzel and Zucker? I guess it depends on which of those 2 you get. It would be tough to get 2 of them as well considering only 1 is a UFA, no?
Malkin and Crosby would be awesome to see. I guess center to wing transition wouldn't be that difficult for Malkin? Not sure I could stand to see Kuznetsov to that stupid bird celebration though lol

Now it’ll be interesting to see who gets the GM job. This is a step in the right direction.

Feel like it has to be Spezza right? I saw they told Steve Greeley he's out of the running (Stars Director of Hockey Strategy, scouting and development)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hockeyfan1234</b></div><div>It doesn’t matter what I believe the core can do. They aren’t going to do the core dirty like that. You never bet against Crosby, Malkin, and Letang.
The difference between LA and Pittsburgh is that their core was younger when they started the re-tool/mini rebuild. The pens just gotta keep building through free agency and hoping it works out and hope to get out of some bad contracts in the process while not giving up high picks/prospects.</div></div>
How do you get rid of bad contracts without giving up the future. The only contract that is a good buyout is granlund. And agreed that LAs core was younger, but if you try to extend the window through free agency (which is exactly what Detroit did that pushed them so far back years ago) your team only gets older and there is risk of signing even more bad contracts.
Also it’s worth noting that FSG has no connection to the core. The penguins do, the ownership does not. Lemieux is no longer active in the penguins ownership so FSG has no loyalty to the core unless they want to be loyal to them.

Exactly. Although I’d bet that if we trade him it would be at the deadline. (It’s hard to do a deadline ACGM when the offseason hasn’t even started yet lol)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hockeyfan1234</b></div><div>This ain’t it. What is the fascination with trading Jake 50% retained and then replacing him with garbage. Do you really think they’d do the core like that?</div></div>
Do you really think this core can win? I keep posting ACGMs where I either sell or go all in. Every time I get met with responses of either “but the core deserves to win” or “you’re trading away too much to compete and ruining the future”. I’m tired of people not realizing that we are in the end of the era and the core is all 35+. We are the new red wings. It’s time we treat the problem like it is instead of pretending we can win another cup and causing a decade of awful teams after the fact instead of trying to do a quick retool that MAYBE some of the core can be around for kinda like LA

Dubas needs to call the rebuild and tank for Celebrini
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>genothegoat</b></div><div>honestly.... im all for the rebuild</div></div>
Ive seen it happen too many times. Imagine if vancouver traded Miller at that deadline and called a rebuild. This way you keep the 14th pick, pickering and any future picks and you move Guentzel instead of signing him to a deal where he will be 32, have an NMC and you started a rebuild. You save 2 years of rebuilding on top of starting a rebuild 2 years earlier than expected. So u save 4 years

What do you think Dubas will do
Because they weren;t his mistakes he can either dismantle it and sell off whatever he can OR do his usual Maple Leaf act and bargain basement shop with a 50% hit rate.
The prospect pool is weak, so theres not tons of help in the immediate future.
Young-ish guys like Nylander, Poehling, etc... are looking average at best, in limited roles
The current group is old, and more likely to deteriorate than improve
The core, the KEY players are all old and unlikely to improve with age, can only hope they stay stable
Some of the big contracts have little to no value in trade: Carter, Petry, Granlund
All of the big ticket aging stars have NTC/NMC, because if it wasnt sentimental or the NTC/NMC, the keys to a great rebuild would be moving Malkin or Crosby. (Letang is signed way too long)
With a small prospect pool, they shouldn;t move any picks, but also arent going to get enough picks back for their moveable commodities. Weak UFA crop this year, and dont think Dubas usual duct tape fixes really help the team. Theyd need way too much to go right AND continued health on an old team AND their limited youth to OVERACHIEVE to have a better result than 2022-23.
Dont know, but a new GM isn;t held by the mistakes of the old GM and doesn;t have to possess the loyalty to bygone successes

doobus make penguin young
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JSEB93</b></div><div>Agreed. Unless they realize in the offseason that those injuries he suffered in the back half of this season are chronic and he'll never be fully healthy again - he's going to be the Penguins starter. And honestly, I'm okay with that. I don't know why a large chunk of this fanbase acts like he's terrible. A healthy Jarry is probably in that 8-10 range of goalies</div></div>
No doubt about it. I mean when Jarry is on his game we’ve seen how dangerous this team can be and how quick they heat up. Though I do think there needs to be a stronger candidate behind him in part to the reasons you listed of injury concerns and the uncertainty if he is THE GUY going forward for years to come.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pensfan21</b></div><div>I'm coming around to this idea. I just think we need a new backup if Jarry comes back. And it would have to be a cheap prove it deal for Jarry</div></div>
100% would be no more then $4m I’d assume for Jarry. A year or 2 max.
So many upgrades at backup too in FA that are available man, DeSmith we could probably juice out a third or 4th if we are lucky but I do think we could use a better backup. Gonna come at the cost of a couple more million being spent in net though. And there are certainly other glaring needs that need to be addressed before our backup goalie.

Yup, and it’s a sigh of relief even knowing that FSG looks like they are a promising ownership group and are going down the right path to get us our new GM. Even if it’s not Dubas, the finalist list was pretty damn good for my liking. I like the work they’ve done so far.

I get the idea of trading assets for players that we want to solidify in our status of contention but it’s a matter of knowing how to use your assets and doing it wisely….
Having 0 combined top 64 picks for the next 2 years is not the answer… ESPECIALLY giving up that 2023 first at 14th OA, that pick CANNOT be traded under any circumstances unless it’s to move down in the draft….

The beginning stages of a rebuild
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brgh4life</b></div><div>I would be shocked if they did anything other than go for it all. They forced Hextall to sign the core and compete. When he failed and didn't have a plan to do so they fired him and his cronies. Also, they are so much closer than people think. Dump the dead weight Hextall forced onto the roster and bringing in a new goalie tandem would do wonders.</div></div>
That’s where you and I (respectfully) disagree. I think this team is over the hump and there isn’t much you can do to change the team enough to be competitive because of all of the NTCs and NMCs. Id rather give the young players a chance and develop a new team identity. Also, a hot take of mine tho is that if Zucker stays, then granlund may have a somewhat decent year (in comparison to the standard he set last year). His metrics indicated that he was having a tough time passing to his line mates, and I think if he gets more time to develop chemistry he may play good enough to validate not buying him out.

Their first choice is to compete sure, but with how competitive the east/metro will be next year I wouldn’t be surprised if they look at their team and decide to take 1-2 years off in order to put young talent around the core in their twilight years. (Like LA did around Doughty and Kopitar). I wouldn’t completely rule out selling this season as a possibility.

Yeah, goalies are really hit or miss from year to year outside of a few like Hank in his prime, and more recently guys like Sorokin. Only like three goalies I’d say are consistent yearly typically.
