<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>lukefelsner</b></div><div>well the last LHD spot is up to Walman Edvinsson and Oesterle. I'd have to say Edvinsson is a good bit better than both. had a pretty comparable D-1 year to Seider D-2, he should make it. Berggren could start in GR but he was so good last year there that i think he should be a line 3 guy. we added so much though that he could get the short stick.</div></div>
I agree that Edvinsson is probably better than Walman, and is much better than Oesterle. Given what minutes that third pair is going to be asked to play, I think Edvinsson is probably better served in Grand Rapids. The top 2 pairings will eat up most of the minutes, so do we want Edvinsson playing 13 minutes/night in the NHL with no PP/PK time or 22 in the AHL playing in every situation? My preference would be in the AHL. Steve's comments about Edvinsson in the post FA press conference seem to align with that as well.
I think we agree on Berggren. I was much more confident he'd be in the NHL before the Kubalik signing. I had him penciled into a 3rd line wing role.
FTR, I hope you're right and I'm wrong.

Also I'd be shocked if Berggren wasn't playing opening night. otherwise love it.</div></div>
I would be willing to bet decent money that both Berggren and Edvinsson start in Grand Rapids.

DET 2022-2023 - Post Day 1 FA
These are all very reasonable takes and I could see you being right on all of them.
Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see Edvinsson start and spend most of the year in GR, especially after what Yzerman added on the left side. I think it'll probably take 2 LD injuries to get him up and my reasoning for that is the same as your reasoning for Veleno in GR. Might as well let him by The Guy™ in GR vs giving him a partner that can't cover his mistakes defensively in the NHL.
I also think Veleno can play the 4th line role in the NHL and I think he's proven to be able to do what Erne does but do it better, so I think he starts in the NHL. Veleno over Erne also gives that line a legitimate chance to score goals. I wouldn't be surprised to see Veleno as the 4C and move Rasmussen to the wing.
It's going to take some serious injury trouble to get Berggren to the NHL at this point. He's probably ready, but we're talking about at least 2 more top 9 injuries/traded players on top of Fabbri before I see him making the team. I'm not sure we see that before the deadline, if at all.
My last nitpick is carrying 3 healthy scratches on D and 0 forwards. Doubt that happens.

ONE of those 3 guys is not getting you close to the ask for Zadina. 2 would probably not even get you there. The kid hasn't been great, but he's still a kid.

Bertuzzi Chychrun Prospects
Also, for the record, I don't think this would ever happen, but I do think it addresses the needs of all teams pretty well. Vegas upgrades the current team while creating cap space, Arizona gets a pretty big haul for Chychrun, and Detroit addresses their gaping hole at LD, while being able to flip Martinez later.

Yeah there's no way Detroit would even consider that. You could probably have one of Zadina/Rasmussen + one of Hanas/Niederbach + a top ten protected/conditional first rounder.

Funny, because I don't think Detroit would want to give up on Zadina either. Maybe if Zadina has another down season and Hoglander slightly improves.
Fair? Maybe. Unpopular? For sure, because neither side is going to want to give up on their guy for another guy in the same situation.

He really didn't have an insane year. He had an insane few weeks. He shot at an unsustainable percentage and overall he's an adequate, easily replaceable hockey player. This contract is fine, a little high, but it doesn't really matter.

Opening night lineup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Drw4209</b></div><div>I'd be surprised if Veleno started the year in GR, he already showed he was NHL ready last year. If he has a good camp he's staying up. Most teams pair their young elite D with the best veteran D on the team and put them in a significant role. Seider has proven he's more than ready for that. It makes no sense to make Lindstrom rot in the press box, he needs to play. Wings will be able to sneak him through waivers right before the season starts like every team does with their young, fringe NHLers</div></div>
I don't disagree that Veleno looked NHL ready at the end of last season but I do think it's more a question of which place is better for him as a hockey player. I would argue that top line center with Raymond and Berggren, with PP and PK time in GR is better long term than 3rd line center in Detroit.
And I don't think Lindstrom will "rot in the press box." That d core is not good enough to not see a TON of rotation throughout the year. Besides, why protect him over Stecher if, to start the next season, you're going to waive him to keep Stecher on the roster? Doesn't follow logically.
Seider has absolutely not proven that he's ready to play 22+ minutes against the other teams best players in the NHL. He's a fantastic prospect but he hasn't proven anything in the NHL yet.

I don't think you're far off. D pairs probably won't start that way but if they do then Seider and Oesterle is the 3rd, not 2nd pair. I bet Veleno starts in GR. Rasmussen moves to 3C, Gagner fills in on that wing. And then yeah, Lindstrom stays up and Nielsen gets the boot.

This may be true. Raymond might end up a better hockey player than Byfield, but the gap isn't nearly as large as you guys are making it out to be. When was the last time a team won a cup without a top 3 player on their team being a center and who in the organization do you project that to be once the wings are competitive again?

I am fairly certain Byfield will be more impactful at the NHL level than Raymond. And, more importantly, he plays center. The wings are deep in the prospect pipeline everywhere but the only thing they're missing is an elite center prospect. Value might be off for sure. I'm just spitballing on how to get the center prospect the wings need. LA has a bunch.

Yep, waiver claim priority is just reverse league standings. So if Arizona wanted Svechnikov they could just claim him before Boston ever had a chance at him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aedoran</b></div><div>For Pettersson to be the center piece in a trade like this he has to start scoring again. Now if he his contract expired after 2021-22 season I could see teams taking a chance. His contract has 4 more years left with a cap hit just over $4M that's a big risk to take.</div></div>
I don't see Pettersson as the centerpiece, to be honest. I see Joseph as the centerpiece. But I agree with the risk involved and that the wings still probably don't do that trade because of the cap hit and contract length. Including Pettersson over Zucker does get the wings to not hang up the phone though, I think. Make it a 2022 or 2023 first instead of a second and I think the wings accept. So I think the idea is fine here, but a Pettersson, Joseph, 2022/23 1st package would get it done. Not sure that the penguins would be willing to give that up though.

I haven't seen much of Joseph but based on his stats alone I don't think "dime a dozen" gives him enough credit. That being said, I agree for the most part. It's not bad but the wings won't have any interest in taking Zucker back. Pettersson instead of Zucker and I think we're getting somewhere.

I assumed Detroit would need to add something, but I couldn't pinpoint a pick either. I initially had the Oilers 2021 second, but something about that didn't feel right either.
Also of note, Fabbri isn't a rental. He's under contract for next season too. I targeted Bean because it would help solve expansion draft protection issues for Carolina on the back end and Detroit's left shooting D are abysmal. I can't see the Canes protecting Bean over Hamilton, Pesce or Slavin but they'd have room to protect Fabbri. Admittedly I modified this from the article in the Athletic to avoid the Wings giving up Mantha or Bertuzzi.

Let me know if I'm reading this wrong but the full trade is:
Montreal gets Marc Staal
Detroit gets a third
Chicago gets Byron, a 2nd, 2 3rds and a 5th?
What makes you think Chicago will get more for retaining 1.4mil on Staal than Detroit will get for retaining 2.8mil and giving up the actual player?

Stecher has been the red wings best defenseman (second best, at worst) this season, and one of the only ones they have under contract next season. If this price is too high for him then Vancouver is not getting him back. I'd be shocked to see the wings trade him at all. If the return was less than this then I'd be whatever is stronger than shocked.

As a wings fan I would like nothing more than to give you guys the older Svechnikov brother. He has been badly misused by the wings, has a ton more talent to show given the opportunity, and he's probably the most likeable person on the wings roster. I think your value is off and the wings wouldn't have any interest in Maenalanen, but I would be happy with this trade purely because I'd be happy for Evgeny.
