Islanders need a shakeup and make a big trade with the Habs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Db1899</b></div><div>Hmm august 11th. Judging on his 44 games from last year. 27% percentile QOC is not being heavily sheltered .
Wahlstrom ranks 5th among forwards in GF/60 and xGF/60, 4th in xGA/60. Defensive liability though lol.
your boy josh anderson tho. The poor mans milan Lucic with negative hockey IQ. He is a replacement level forward. He has a negative impact on the rate his team scores goals , expected goals, and he’s terrible defensively. Sucks on the powerplay too!</div></div>
If you were an Islanders fan (and i am a massive one) you would know which rates and analytics actually matter to the style they play. It's why they are projected to do nothing in every model but get a win or 2 away from the cup the past 2 years. Possession means little to nothing. Trotz is perfectly happy with the other team circling the outside of the Isles zone and holding onto the puck for a full minute. The eye test in those situations actually makes sense to use bc that is a very bad strategy to have analytically. How players position themselves, box out, and use their stick is everything and none of those things can be quantified into analytics. Things like that are why Leo Komarov gets placed with Barzal through an entire playoff run despite brutal analytics. Its an invaluable impact that cant be put into numbers.
Goal scoring rates are also such a heavily picked stat that doesnt really matter when given context. Trotz will use Wahlstrom in situations where they need a goal and never use him in situations where the other team needs a goal. Also, Wahlstrom takes by far the most shots on the team, an insane in amount if you actually average everyone out per 60, and he hits the net at a 50% rate. Most analytics are heavily shot and shot attempt based. His shot totals paint a false story to the impact he actually has. He plays exclusively non high leverage situations defensively and only high leverage situations offensively and that really skews his numbers. If he actually was a better player, he should have wayyyyyy more points and goals based on shot attempts alone. Every time hes on the ice, the team tries getting him the puck to shoot. Its a strategy thats been hilariously unsuccessful so far. So when the rest of their team gets back to their normal levels of play i think he's going to be off the roster, whether being sent down or traded. And i cant wait to back here to rub it in when it happens

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>bagelbob</b></div><div>my personal thought is that he's probably going to turn into a middle six to maybe a stretch top line winger who can score goals, which i think is perfectly acceptable and very useful for this team. if they're moving him, move him for someone like girard or chychrun, or a top scorer. i can't think of one rn besides boeser and i think the nucks would want dobson instead, but i'm sure there's someone out there lol. anderson doesn't move the needle enough for me to be convinced to move on from wahlstrom.</div></div>
This is very fair. I have my own way of gauging a players worth and everyone is entitled to their own opinion with theirs. I like to combine analytics, eye test, and team surroundings/situation to judge what a player would be worth on another team. I think Anderson has a very high ceiling with the Islanders and i also think people overrate wahlstrom compared to how hes viewed in league circles. Every fanbase does that with their own players to be fair. There were many Rangers fans that didnt want to include Kravtsov or Schneider in a trade for Eichel. But judging on the way outside evaluators talk about wahlstrom, i think his trade value is way less than people think bc hes very flawed under the goal scoring numbers and misleading overall analytics.
Boeser would be a great option but i dont think the Islanders would be able to match most other biddings by other teams. Chychrun is probably gonna be Arizona's captain next year and has publicly said he wants to stick through the rebuild. so they are not gonna trade him to anyone. And Girard to me is a very interesting thought but i wouldnt trade Wahlstrom for him bc that just opens up another hole. We need to have a top 6 winger that Trotz can trust to play important minutes and i think Wahlstrom gets them that this year at some point. I honestly think hes gonna be traded this year

I took one look at your comment history and jesus christ im happy i did. there's literally zero chance you are older than 14. I just wont believe it. Calling Anderson a bottom 6 forward with an albatross contract is convincing enough that you either dont follow the NHL or are actually 12. Didnt need to click on your profile and see a comment right there that said the Islanders should fire Trotz instead of trading Wahlstrom. I actually laughed when i saw that. There honestly should be an age limit on here or they should make a separate forum for kids to spout their nonsense. Would save everyone the headache of reading things that an adult human being with a working brain would never write

this is currently, and will remain, a major topic in the Islanders community. If you play back a game film and focus solely on Wahlstrom, most games you will come away thinking that he is very flawed and questioning his hockey IQ. the way he positions himself, decides to stickhandle, passes, etc are all major red flags. His possession numbers started off well bc he was getting carried by Pageau and Parise. His isolated stats very clearly showed that. I personally dont believe in him turning out well and i have watched alot of games of his in college, world juniors and the AHL. He will always flash bc his shot is so elite. But i truly think he doest have the hockey IQ or mental toughness that you need in top players. We will see how his career plays out but i'm very willing to die on that hill

Thats very fair. I personally love what Anderson and Chiarot bring to the table, especially in the playoffs. And im thinking strongly along the lines of how well they will fit in to the current Islanders team and system. Like Anderson isnt a star but hes better than what most teams run out with their star players nowadays (lightning excluded). He's definitely a better fit on the Isles top line than any of the RWs that Barzal has played with too

do you follow the team? they need a top 4 D right now like they need air to breathe. Pulock is hurt for a while and Chara and Greene can barely play on the 3rd pair right now. Salo and Dobson cant be trusted yet down the stretch in high leverage games. That leaves them with Pelech and Mayfield... They will trade for one, regardless of who it is. I'm willing to bet alot of money on that.
And i have a strong personal belief that Wahlstrom won't pan out. I think he will be a 25 goal scorer who is really bad 5v5, especially in his own zone. Anderson has never had someone like Barzal and he scores close to a 30 goal pace while bringing a unique skillset thats almost impossible to find nowadays. Hes also only 27 and has a 6M AAV until hes only 33. I think its a no brainer for the Isles but im not surprised people dont agree bc Wahlstrom's shot and goal scoring numbers heavily cloud the rest of his game. I think his ceiling is Mike Hoffman, someone the Isles wont touch with a 10 foot pole

Anderson's contract is horrible so far just like most people expected.
So half a year of Chiarot and you take on the Anderson contract for an early pick, a mid-round pick, and two solid prospects.
I'd love to hear what other Islander fans think about this.</div></div>
I would gladly take on a 6M dollar contract for a unique power forward that scores at a close to 30 goal pace and is right in his prime. I think Trotz will get way more value out of him as well and he may put up insane numbers next to Barzal. And i think lou trades for Chiarot with an extension or thinking he has a chance of resigning him. He never gives up real assets for pure rentals. Just look at the last few deadlines. So a risky top prospect and a conditional 1st and 3rd for their immediate 1st line RW and 2nd pair D. Seems like a great deal to me

The Isles are an unknown at this point. They have a full 65 games left this year. So even while having the least points in the league rn with a few games in hand, if they could regain their form from the last couple of years they can easily compete for a spot. they havent played a single home game yet with even half an NHL roster. The road trip to start the year was not only bad bc it was 13 games straight but also bc the scheduling of having 5 days off and then playing back to back nights just made no sense. They are definitely better than they have shown and their shooting luck and analytics back that up.
Chiarot would help a lot, specifically bc he would fit well in a Trotz system. I see him as more than a rental tbh bc Lou never likes trading for pending UFAs unless he signs them right away or believes he can sign tham after the year. Also i honestly think they will trade Wahlstrom soon bc there are a bunch of red flags still apparent that it's questionable if he will ever be able to fix. He's got a world class shot but has been very bad in most other areas

i think he actually is and people are going to be surprised when it happens. Not going to go deep into it but there are major concerns with how he will fit into a Trotz system and how good his hockey IQ and hands are. Even if he pans out, he could become a Mike Hoffman who scores 30 goals but noone is interested in him bc hes a black hole 5v5 and horrible defensively. He's got a high ceiling but a low floor and an issue even with that high ceiling. I think Anderson's value to a Trotz team is very hard to quantify bc he will instantly be one of their most important pieces. Similar to how defensive defensemen become so highly valued under Trotz. Legit power forwards who an score are rare and almost priceless with how Trotz uses them

Gortons Liquidation Sale
The Islanders have had so many chances to get Hoffman over the past few years and they clearly dont want to touch him with a 10 foot pole. Let alone give up their nhl ready top D prospect already playing very well in the NHL. And adding high picks to that?
I think they are in heavy after Chiarot but i also heard Elliote Friedman say on his podcast that Montreal will ask for a 1st for him but based on the year hes having, no team is going to be willing to do that for a rental. He said its pretty reasonable to think the return would be a 2nd plus a solid prospect or young NHL player. The fact that Savard got a 1st last year was bc he's a right shot D, which are way more valuable, and also the fact that the Lightning knew thier pick was going to be essentially a 2nd round pick. Chiarot doesnt hold the same value.
What i think is an intriguing idea is a Anderson for Wahlstrom swap. Wahlstrom has a higher ceiling if he pans out and already is scoring at a 30 goal pace per 60. He was their leading goal scorer while playing the least minutes on the entire team bc Trotz doesnt trust him defensively yet. Anderson is in his prime and would fit the Isles heavy win now mentality. It makes sense to me based on what both teams are looking to do

Literally no chance in hell the Islanders even consider this for a split second. Mayfield makes like 1.5 a year and is a huge part of their team down the stretch and in the playoffs every year. They also need like 2 defensemen rn so it wouldnt begin to make sense to trade one of the 2 currently available top 4 D they have. Also, Strome is a bigtime project at this point. His skating is just too poor to be a regular top 6 player and he doesnt have the grit for the bottom 6. Not sure where this idea even came from tbh

Not bad but i feel like the deals are a bit of overpays from the islander end given that komarov and hickey are in the final years of their deals and if they play decent, can be flipped at the deadline. Their cap hits arent that big either. On Tarasenko, it seems like noone wants to give much up for him. Seattle took Dunn over any package that Tarasenko would have gotten (even though Seattle was able to retain alot of salary). He seems like a high risk contract dump at this point given that he hasnt been great for 3 years now bc of all the injuries. Also Aho is gone, no way he makes the isles roster given that they are a cup contender needing big D-men to play their style well

everyone is in cap trouble except the major rebuilders pretty much. the jets are gonna have a hard time finding an offer with young players on ELCs who can play right now while getting the same value back. remember, the team Laine goes to will have to give him a big contract as well. beauvillier is a really solid, young player in his cheap years who will give you 20 goals and solid defense and leddy is a top 4 on a 5.5 contract. firsts are the most valuable commodity in the nhl. a late 1st was pretty much all the jets got for trouba. this could even be a bad deal for the islanders, as trouba has been a really bad NHL player in every respect but goals. laine at 10.5 is a massive gamble. hes a below average (statistically one of the worst in hockey) forward everywhere but his shot. you would be gambling that trotz could turn his game around. but no chance im paying that price for a player like that. also, dal colle is way more likely on this team than any free agent. he has a 1-way deal now. pretty much a lock to be on the team barring a trade.
