2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #5: The Final Stretch
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Db1899</b></div><div>They’re just delaying the rebuild to get knocked out in the 1st rd. They need to go the San Jose route and tear it down</div></div>
From a financial perspective, it's a lot harder for teams like Nashville to just go into a full rebuild because they're more reliant on the gate revenue for their games than larger markets are. Bad teams don't sell as many tickets. Unfortunately this means they're usually treading the playoff bubble zone until something forces them to commit to a rebuild. Once Josi and Saros are gone it would make more sense since those players aren't easily replaced through trade or FA.
Ultimately you need to convince ownership that rebuilding the squad is a more viable investment than trying to sell out the arena.

Its not like Schenn or Holl who had good seasons or playoff runs. Heck so many teams now regretting those contracts they gave to these guys
Look at Holl, Det tried to move him at TDL</div></div>
Boosh is physical, Holl is not.
The Holl signing was a head scratcher for Detroit. Paid a lot for a 3RD at best then opted to get Petry a month later.

2425 Leafers
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>He has played with both Matthews & Taveres and as such Marner and Nylander. Look at Robertson's production with those lines versus without.
Hall and Kurashev are both better, especially Kurashev who plays a complete 200 ft game and is very good defensively. And no, Kurashev has not been tied to Bedard the entire season no different then your argument with Robertson and the top 2 lines.</div></div>
Sure, <a href="https://www.naturalstattrick.com/linestats.php?fromseason=20232024&thruseason=20232024&stype=2&sit=5v5&score=all&rate=n&team=TOR&vteam=ALL&view=wowy&loc=B&gpfilt=none&fd=2023-10-10&td=2024-04-18&tgp=2000&strict=incl&p1=8481582&p2=8479318&p3=8478483&p4=8477939&p5=8475166" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">let me know what I'm missing</a> because the actual data suggests that Robertson doesn't play with AM/JT/MM/NY a lot. Of the four, the most he's with is JT at 80 minutes all season and....is worse with him than without? If you want to be obnoxiously specific, Robertson <em>has</em> played with the top four forwards, but based on the TOI it's basically negligible. And even when he's been put with them, it doesn't provide any evidence it's actually boosted his production. Entirely plausible he'd get more goals and assists with them, but that's not what has happened this season which is what you were implying.
We can look at Kurashev next, whose<a href="https://www.naturalstattrick.com/linestats.php?fromseason=20232024&thruseason=20232024&stype=2&sit=5v5&score=all&rate=n&team=CHI&vteam=ALL&view=wowy&loc=B&gpfilt=none&fd=2023-10-10&td=2024-04-18&tgp=2000&strict=incl&p1=8480798&p2=8484144&p3=8477450&p4=8474870&p5=8473422" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">most common linemate</a> is Bedard. <a href="https://www.naturalstattrick.com/linestats.php?fromseason=20232024&thruseason=20232024&stype=2&sit=5v5&score=all&rate=n&team=CHI&vteam=ALL&view=wowy&loc=B&gpfilt=none&fd=2023-10-10&td=2024-04-18&tgp=2000&strict=incl&p1=8484144&p2=8480798&p3=0&p4=0&p5=0" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Narrowing it down</a>, he's played more with Bedard than with anyone else. The values also imply he's not only been significantly less productive without Bedard than with, they've been pretty bad together in general. Maybe that's just consequence of the Blackhawks overall season. Regardless, he's absolutely been strapped to Bedard this season.
So my original post still stands. The "Leafs player only good because other good players" argument doesn't work with Robertson. Absolutely makes a strong case for 2nd best forward on your team considering he doesn't need to rely on star players to produce and actually has knees. He's absolutely worth more than a 4th or whatever pittance picks he's been getting on this forum.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>To much for Boosh. Look what Bogo got that should be the price for him rn.
Domi at that price NTU. Either a long term 3m range deal or have fun
Roy will get more in FA there are not a lot of good RD out there besides him and Pesce.
Dewar will probs get more, Robertson and Benoit less
And Kampf is sticking around. They will probs get him better linemates next season</div></div>
I think 2 million is fine for Lyubushkin. He's significantly younger than Bogosian and can actually play top four minutes on Toronto. Also he's a right shot which I'm told is worth a million alone.
I don't entirely disagree on Domi being a lot of 4 million, but again, I believe this is the realistic ask for him. Anything under 4 is great.
Regarding Roy, other RHD on the market are: Montour, Tanev, Walker, Pesce, Carrier, DeMelo. 6 million is the most I'd offer any of those guys. The other option, as I mentioned, would be a trade but it might need to be done before the draft if the 2024 1st would be in play. Regardless of what happens, filling the position should be priority number one.
Dewer, Robertson and Benoit aren't going to be much more or less than what I put down. maybe a 500k difference at most. The key for me would be getting Robertson and Benoit at two years.
Getting rid of Kampf freed up a lot of space on the roster to make depth moves, if you can trade him, you have to do it. He's a fourth line centre and hasn't been worth his contract. I don't think better linemates fixes the problem for a 4C guy, unless you want to get Engvall and Mikheyev back.

Robertson has mainly played with Domi as his centre, not Matthews/Tavares. Kurashev's been strapped to Bedard. The "Leafs player only good because other good players" argument doesn't work.
Hall's been on a rough decline. I wouldn't invest a lot in him being that good next season.

I said second best forward. For 5v5 points per 60 he'd be second behind Bedard on Chicago. One of the reasons I'm hesitant to trade him for peanuts.
Doesn't look like there's a difference to me. Would be a lot easier to accept that Chicago is blatantly tanking to get Celebrini.

I picked Detroit but if you want to do it more analytically - should look at the upcoming schedules for each team to see who they're up against.
For the four teams, going to assume that any team above them in the standings by at least 5 points is a loss, any team below them by at least 5 points is a win. Otherwise, it's a toss up.
Tampa - 7 wins, 4 losses, 5 toss ups
Philadelphia - 7 wins, 8 losses, 2 toss ups
Detroit - 9 wins, 5 losses, 4 toss ups
Long Island - 8 wins, 6 losses, 5 toss ups
Looks like the Red Wings have the easiest schedule going into the final stretch while the Flyers have the hardest.

(PIT/CAR) - Guentzel, Smith for Bunting, Koivunen, Ponomarev, Lucius, 2024 2nd (PHI), 2024 5th (CAR)
Need to revisit this in 2 to 4 years to see how the three prospects shook out. I doubt any of them are going to be as good as Guentzel was for the Penguins but even if they turn out as middle-of-the-roster contributors then it's a okay return.
A lot of people are disappointed that Pittsburgh couldn't shake a guaranteed 1st rounder out of Carolina. There was a lot of hesitancy to part with them (firsts) this trade deadline, especially for wingers. The players that did get moved for firsts had caveats attached to them, like Lindholm, Monahan and Henrique were all centres in a weak centre rental market, and the latter had heavy retention. Looks like ya boy Dubas preferred getting the kids back than guaranteeing a top 32 selection.
Something Dubas was effective at during his Toronto tenure was being able to spot decent players in the 2nd and later rounds - Durzi, Robertson, Knies and Minten were all 2nd round picks. Settling on a mid-round 2nd might've influenced this decision but he's not operating with the same scouting network he had in Toronto, so we'll have to wait and see if anyone Pittsburgh picks up will pan out effectively.
It's a disappointing return for Guentzel on the outset but there's a number of what-ifs here that it might be looked back upon as an alright trade. Again, need to wait a couple years to see if the guys they got back pan out.

2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #4: Deadline is Approaching
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>Why does everyone get a blockbuster minus Toronto?</div></div>
A number of guys the Leafs wanted were on Calgary, and the Flames were playing hardball with Toronto specifically. Tanev, Lindholm or Hanifin would've been solid adds but Conroy would rather be a dolt and get spanked by Vegas. Tarasenko was down entirely to his NTC as well, another case of a GM (Dorion) being a massive moron.
Leafs are also hesitant to move their 1st for a rental, and they don't have any 2nds to bridge the gap so they haven't been as active on top guys. Their priority adds are RD (which they've kind of addressed) and C and both are in short supply.
