That may be, but if Rasmussen is a red line for the wings, I don’t know what they’re doing. Just a massive overvaluation relative to the upgrade.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pensfan21</b></div><div>Because they're trying to win now and we need to get more youth in the lineup. Can't do that through free agency and while I'm not a fan of giving up draft picks, doing so for a center with tons of potential is worth it for me. I know he's unproven but if there's a player who can help win now and potentially bridge the gap when the rebuild comes in 1-2 years I'd take that risk. I don't think Pens have any chance next year unless we make some bold, creative moves</div></div>
Fair enough. IMO Rossi needs a mid-teens pick plus to consider moving him (which this absolutely is) the addition of Pickering would be big for the Wild prospect pool.
It’s def aggressive and the Wild really couldn’t say no.

This is really aggressive and I like it. But feels off, I have no confidence in Chevy turning those picks into NHL talent so maybe consider switching things up to be similar to the Eichel deal?
To DET - PLD
To WPG - Rasmussen, 17 OA, and an A/B prospect (Wallinder? I’m no expert on the DET prospect pool)

Buyout Hell
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Victor24</b></div><div>For the trade, it is a little heavy on the Pit side. The picks difference is around 100 points or 38th overall. I really like Addison but he will probably require a low 2nd not a high one.
A fair trade would be:
Pit 1st + NJ 3rd for Addison + Min 2nd
That would be like trading Addison for 56 overall</div></div>
This is pretty close. The fact they moved that 2nd (let alone the cap they brought on it), is really hamstringing them. I think the Pens would be in a position to get real value for that pick.

I’d do this no question from the Wild POV. I have zero clue why PIT would want to part with its top 3 assets to gain a goalie that’s obviously on the down swing and and an unproven young C (albeit one that’s likely to have his breakout this season).

I think that’s a very good estimate of the Cat trade. I do think you need to get another defender for that 3rd pair.

Fleury's days of being a 60+ game starter are over, so you need someone you're absolutely comfortable starting for 50+ games and leaning on come playoff time.</div></div>
I’m not comfortable with Gus playing 50+ and assuming he’ll be a go to guy in the playoffs, and I’m probably in the minority on that. His biggest issue has apparently been conditioning and that takes *years* to really reap the benefits of. Gus had a good season but if he has a .930 rather than a .950 during that late season stretch we’re not having this conversation.
Gus seems like he’s got a bright future, especially in the Wild system, but I’m not sold he’s closer to a 1A than a backup yet. Goalies are very fickle beasts.

I know you're in tune with what's realistic vs. hypothetical and I do think it's a fun proposal just to see what it would/could look like. I just know Guerin will have extensions done that tie up money, but no harm in looking at things alternatively.
I do think Ohgren will be ready when he comes over and I also think Peart won't require a ton of time in Iowa once he eventually comes. To me, both of them play very mature, low-mistake games.</div></div>
Kinda forgot about Peart, lol. But I guess it’s important to not tie up money so we can’t spend it later, the sting of the Goose, Merrill, and Greenway deals is probs pretty fresh. I don’t doubt the team looks into retaining some of those guys (Hartman is the only one I’d prioritize) but there’s no reason to sign them now rather than next summer, or at least until after a big target like Matthews is officially locked up.
And if we don’t have a big name guy to go after, do the thing we did this year with cap space. AKA, if you’ve got time then use it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drmantalban</b></div><div>Definitely will have a little more breathing room in 24-25, but no way Guerin rosters 8 ELCs to regular roles.
I'm all for the youth movement myself, but in all reality, you'll easily have a few million less than what's mocked here. Like it or not, we're gonna see things like extensions to some of [Zucc, Reaves, Foligno, Hartman]. Then you'll get a few plug-a-hole types like the Steel, Bonino or Kulkov's of the league.
No reason the ELCs can't earn the jobs, but Guerin will def sign a handful of insurance veterans just in case.</div></div>
I’m well aware of that fact. But if, big IF, Matthews expresses interest in playing next to Kaprizov, it would be a mistake not to sign him. We’ve been whining for a 1C forever and getting one in UFA is reason enough to say screw those guys.
I think the question mark ELCs are Yurov and Ohgren but wouldn’t shock me to see one of them on the opening day roster in 24. I also feel good about Lambos and Hunt being in the lineup, albeit not on the same pair.
And regarding Rossi and Beckman, I expect them to be lineup regulars this year. But let me sign Duhaime and Dewar and I think we’re in business. I don’t think this is sooo much of a stretch.

I hear you, but not really the point. The point is the Wild *could* be in on him with a real offer. Fun story with the cap space in the above is that the Wild could offer him about $3 mil *more* than this if they wanted.
It’s more to show how the cap situation isn’t as dire as people are making it seem, even if it doesn’t include and Auston Matthews.

It won’t hurt, if nothing else it endears him to the coaches and staff. But if you think about the physiology of what happened to him, he basically lost 2 years of development. The first was a decline due to the disease, the second was rebuilding to where he was when he got sick. That’s where he’s at now and we can see some progression, judge him from here forward.
It undoubtedly lowers his ceiling, but he’s so smart and skilled there’s absolutely a top 6 guy there.

There’s a disconnect, no doubt. But I don’t believe we can take anything from the games Rossi has played in the NHL to determine whether he’s “ready” or not.
P.S. Rossi’s bout of Myocarditis puts him back to the physical development of a 20 y/o. He should start to see some improvements this year just due to regular training.

I think if he were coming in as a scoring winger, your argument would hold more water. And if you take the 'earning it' mentality out of the equation, where does that leave the Wild? I'd say it leaves them back in the Chuck Fletcher era, where players are anointed spots in the lineup even if they don't deserve it. That 'earning it' message is coming from Guerin just as much as it is from Dean.
I agree that Dean is a bit set in his ways, but he trusts guys like Freddy for good reason - they play responsible, hard-nosed hockey. That is what they want out of Rossi.</div></div>
If we’re trying to get Rossi to play like Freddy, we’ve lost the plot.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CoolHandL</b></div><div>I get what you're saying about Rossi's stock as a top-6 player, but it is also true that players who are ready to play in the league make the most of the minutes given to them. Every chance you get, you go out and play hard - even if that doesn't mean points. Guerin, and Evason by extension, have made it clear that they will not just anoint a player to a top line without them earning it. Look at Faber: end of the season he comes out of the gate on that third pair doing exactly what is expected of him plus a bit more and now the chances of him playing in the top 4 next season are good. Not guaranteed, but good. Rossi is soft everywhere he has been put so far - soft on pucks, soft on defenders. That works in the AHL, but in the big dance not so much.
This is not a finesse league, these guys will get tossed and man-handled if they play cute all the time, especially in the playoffs. Hell Boldy probably needs to learn some of that kind of workmanship too, good thing he is 6'2''. These smaller guys are big risks, and often take much longer to develop - if they do at all. We shall see, my jaded Minnesota fandom will try to keep the faith. Hah!</div></div>
I’m not a believer in “earning it.” Play the best players in the position that makes them the best. I’m a former coach and you can’t force feed ideals if you want to win, you’ve gotta park your pride at the door. Dean has his favorites and his ideals and he doesn’t change, that’s not a good coach.
And I take issue with the idea that Rossi is being judged on his overall play and not his lack of scoring. Put Zucc on the 4th line and see how effective he is. It’s about the player’s skill set. It’s very easy to create a narrative about how specific guys aren’t “playing the right way” when you ask them to do things they’ve never said they can do.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CoolHandL</b></div><div>I certainly hope you prove me wrong about him. Assuming the whole team were healthy, would you say that Rossi was a better option than Freddy to play against Dallas? That is where I am coming from. If he doesn't deserve only 4th line minutes next season, which I totally agree with, then where does he fit? I don't see how him playing between Duhaime and Foligno is going to help him much more. And EE and Hartman have the top two Cs clamped down, for now. Here's hoping Rossi finds that killer instinct, because he doesn't have it right now.
I bet if he struggles again in the fall, they try him at wing. Maybe opposite 97, who knows?</div></div>
Because Zucc has a year left, re-signing Freddy put Rossi in a tough spot. Zucc can really only play with 97 and Freddy is what he is, a bottom 6 C that has zero offensive instinct (I will die on this hill) but the coach LOVES him so he’s not going anywhere. Hartman is easily moved to W on basically any line.
Rossi isn’t a bottom 6 C and never will be. You have to force feed him too 6 minutes and then decide what he is, we have no idea if he’s an NHLer because Dean used him entirely out of place his entire audition last year. And as for was he playoff ready? Probably not, but nobody else on the team was either so that’s a bit of a red herring.

I think Foligno getting traded so that Nyquist and/or Soucy could come back is intriguing, even though it probably won't happen. Goose is probably gone, assuming he expresses that desire to Guerin.
I sorta have a bad feeling about Rossi right now. I really hope he has a solid offseason, he needs it. Next year could be make-or-break for a prospect of his stock. No way Freddy gets relegated to the fourth line, he is a perfectly fine 3rd line C/W and a better option than Rossi in that spot.</div></div>
I agree that Addy should be getting more than his QO, probs something closer to Sandin’s 2x$1.4 but a 1 year prove it is possible.
But to your last thought, I don’t know what gives that impression. I realize there’s a narrative about him right now but we’ve only seen him play 4th line and that is not a role he will excel in. If Dean is so set on Freddy as the 3C, then you’ve gotta stick Rossi with 97. Any way you slice it, Rossi needs to play a lot next year.
I fundamentally disagree with the idea that Freddy is a better option than Rossi.
