Definitely not unless they were sure that they would resign him - and I think most people would pick the younger player, but when Rutherford gets fixated on a player all logic gets thrown out. Again, Allvin + GMJR might not even be interested.

I totally agree, I can't really think of many cases where the Pens trade him and get better, but this is just a different perspective of keeping him and losing for nothing vs. trying to asset management-savvy

BIG FREAKING JEFF STAYS
Interesting! I actually think your contracts are pretty solid. Kind of what I would expect Rust to go for, even though I kind of assume they will be losing him this summer. The good news is that ERod likely won't reach that high of a hit, at least not yet. He has been great and he looks like a high skilled forward, but I think they would give him a shorter-term "prove it" deal over 2 years before handing him Vrana/Farabee/Garland money. Ideally for me, would like like 2 years @ 3.3M AAV. Never the less, would be very happy with this team going into next year! Sid-Geno-Letang-MAF together again 15+ years since they came in is just unfathomable in the best way.

Truthfully the term is only to get the cap hit down. the final 2 years likely will not matter when the team is trending downwards. I also can see Letang being a good player at 39 years old with his freak-like conditioning. Pens will be pretty bad by 2026, so let it rip!

Blow it up at the TDL
The issue with blowing up teams in a flat cap era is that there are only about 9 teams that can afford to take on $4M+, and they are all typically in a rebuilding phase. Really a rock and a hard place for you guys.. I think I would try to cycle in as many young Phantoms players as possible just to keep some jump alive, outside of firing the coaches, exec team and management teams, of course.

John Marino might be available per The Athletic
Just read that too, but wouldn't look too hard into it, especially not in this trade. Much rather keep Marino + Zucker.
What I took from it is that if the right return came to GMRH, that he would obviously give it enough thought. Essentially, he is not untouchable, which at this stage of the Penguins should pretty much go for any Penguin.
I don't expect GMRH to do much at all this week, with exception to signing a bottom 6 winger and potentially another dman. Philly fans have warned us of this, so I am not expecting any huge trades or signings, even with how badly the Pens need to bring in a good player to compensate for McCann's departure.

Trades are good IMO, does not look like a fun team to play against. Say what you want about the Risto trade (it was bad), but this team just might have an identity now and will suck to play against.

New Pens
This one rocks and actually gives a fair look at alternatives without emptying the future assets. Trades seem fair enough, especially for teams looking to trade cap for draft picks.
I need John Gibson to the Pens.. Absolutely need. Keep manifesting it please. Only thing that is tough is Anaheim gaining $1m towards the cap when they would likely try to lose space in a Gibson deal. Maybe retain half of Pettersson ($2m over 4 years is brutal, but trading Zucker and getting Gibson is worth it IMO) for them to do it? Legare is also likely the better prospect between himself and Poulin, so they're getting another future and will be a scary team in a few years.
Tkachuk trade probably starts with Guentzel like you have, which is obviously a very difficult decision. If they would rather have the physicality and speed over a guy who can snipe and score in the net front, it makes sense. Would be hard to resign him in 2022, but Carter and Rust likely leaving opens the door. I think I would do it.
Palmeiri on Sid's line would just be too much fun. Dupuis 2.0 immediately. Also pick up a Pens kryptonite for the sole fact that we dont have to play against him? Love it. Raffl would be a smart move, too.
Still have concerns about the right side offense and defense (especially with Kapanen + Rust new contracts) but I think the trio of POJ, Ruhwedel and Friedman can hold it down. Just hope Matheson doesn't sink Marino again, which would likely be the same result as the beginning of last year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mauston_atthews</b></div><div>Would u be interested in a McCann to leafs deal where we send a 2022 2nd, dermott, and Abramov? This way u don’t lose him for nothing. Dermott can play the right side and is a pretty solid guy who is a great skater and responsible defensively. Abramov is a fast, skilled and annoying guy to play against. He was great in the World Juniors.</div></div>
I don't think it's a bad deal at all, especially because it replaces some depth in the team as well as adding Dermott who can play right now. Not sure if Toronto would be okay with Dermott and a 2nd, but McCann should absolutely be sought after for his shot, PP usage and ability to jump between different lines. He is also cost controlled and RFA next year as well, which is why I was surprised to see him off the protection list.
I think I would say yes to the deal, even if the 2nd round pick is really around 55-60th next year.

Agreed! He's great for the team and would suck to see him go, but you're absolutely right about finding his replacement vs finding one for McCann or even Zucker. Holding out hope that Hextall has a deal in place to take on Matheson, but so do 31 other teams.

One more run at the cup
Oh boy - lots happening here!
I think I am with you on the protected players, maybe only switching McCann and Carter strictly for the potential of not having Malkin for a good portion of next year. Carter fills that role a lot better than McCann and I would rather play it safe than assume Seattle won't take him. Still think they will take whoever is not protected from the 4th line, but losing Carter is a massive blow if Geno can't play til 2022.
Zucker would be great in EDM. Still love him and would be grateful if he was on the roster next year, but he has to find his puck luck with that salary cap. That trade is more than fair for both and I feel like it's still selling low, but gotta do what you gotta do.
I know we are expecting Hexy & Burke to bring in a brusier, but Deslauriers is useless and shouldn't be worth any asset at all. I was so relieved when the TDL rumor turned to be false lmao. He's awful.
Not sure what happens with DeSmith, but he will definitely have interest. I actually would not be completely shocked if they protected him over Jarry, simply for the cap issues. a 3rd + 7th seems fair to me.
I do love the Rinne + Coleman pickups. Coleman would fit on this team almost too well. I don't really know what his next deal will look like, but what you offered seems like a good deal in a cap compliant world. I assume Hyman will price himself out of Toronto, likely getting closer to $5M per year.
Can Saad come home on a discount? Doesn't he want to play near where he grew up? for free? :grimace

Playoff bound right
Interesting - Not like you aren't giving up a lot with the picks + NoPat, but I don't see a 2nd coming back with Johnny even if his contract expires next year. If I were you, I would trade off what you can and try to sign Johnny in Free Agency so you can still get some pieces back for your guys and just wait another year for him to come to Philly.
I am not a Philly fan but the Carter contract is good. I would honestly try to lock him up as long as he is willing to go, since I feel like his regression was simply due to the D in front of him and just a mental lapse. He is really good, and I think it's pretty obvious to most people even with his sophomore slump. Good on you for paying him, regardless! Will be fun to watch him again

Eichel In Fleury back to Pit
As a huge Penguins fan and an even bigger Fleury fan - you have sparked my interest.
Main issue is that Pittsburgh can't bring in ~$9M in salary and only send $2M out. Also still not so sure that they protect Jarry over DeSmith, assuming that DeSmith is likely more appealing with his lower cap hit & 1 year remaining.
Still interested however..

Don't disagree with that at all (Hello Matt Matheson) but Pettersson has been good for the Penguins the past 2 seasons in his top4 role. It would really come down to if Heinola is ready to play top4 next year, which I don't see why he wouldn't be able to unless he gets injured

I don't see it as a lateral move as Pettersson is a top4 player on this team and is only 24 - and I don't sense the need to send Forbot back if the Jets want depth rather than losing a dman. Penguins have enough options at LD, so it can be for a pick or two instead.
I can totally see why some teams wouldn't be able to add a $4m player in the current market, however

I know he hasn't done much but it opens the door for Rust & Kapanen to move around the middle 6, which makes a team much more lethal. Crosby can will players to be functional top6 players, and I think rodrigues has the speed and shot to tread water up there.

I agree that it's still the old boys club who thinks you can't trade to a rival but the facts are that the Flyers are cooked, Freidman said they aren't close on a contract (can obviously change that course) and Fletcher used to work for Pittsburgh / Hextall long time Flyer. I don't see Laughton getting more than a 2nd rounder because if you have to offer a first, why not just go for a Forsberg or a Reinhart?
