Tampa Bay Lightning signed Nicholas Paul (7 Years / $3,150,000 AAV)

Briesbois knows the deal is a headache by year 7.</div></div>
I mean a lot of paid professionals sign players to deals they think are fine every year and yet here we are approaching the buyout window and speculating on which bad contracts get bought out. It's almost like some of these paid professionals make mistakes or something..

(MIN/LAK) - Fiala for Faber
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>futurehofer</b></div><div> Without the buyouts, Fiala would have been gone last year anyway. The buyouts bought us 1 more year of Fiala. Kevin has been playing here on borrowed time. It's been clear for a while that this day was coming, it was just a matter of when as opposed to if.</div></div>
This is the part most people don't seem to understand. The buyouts allowed them to keep Fiala one more year to make another attempt at a playoff run. Maybe Guerin could have gotten a bit more last year (doubtful imo) but there was simply no way to keep him. With Boldy being due a pay raise next year, even if they moved Dumba and Jost to free up cap space to keep Fiala another year, how do you make it work next year when you have to replace them AND give Boldy a raise as well as account for a little bit more in dead cap for the buyouts? Simply put there was no reasonable way to keep Fiala and whether this deal ends up being good or bad for the Wild will be seen in a few years when we see what the pick ends up being and if Faber becomes a contributing presence on their defense.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>littlejerryseinfeld</b></div><div>I don't know if Minnesota can take back that much money (necas next deal) in a fiala trade due to cap constraints</div></div>
Depending on what happens with their goalie situation, they may be able to bridge Necas on a 2-3 year deal and make that work. If they bring back Fleury and keep Talbot, that probably eliminates any other moves that bring back more than league minimum cap barring some unlikely situation like they move Zuccarello or something.

Please help me understand why Minnesota would want to give up a 2nd to take back a winger they traded you because they couldn't afford to keep him and didn't have a roster spot for him. The situation hasn't changed for the Wild.

Vancouver Canucks signed Filip Johansson (2 Years / $925,000 AAV)
Despite being drafted in the 1st round because Fenton was an idiot, I recall him actually being projected to be a 3rd round pick so there's still potential to him panning out to be something. Michael Russo summed it up as saying it's not that the Wild didn't see talent, they just thought their scouting staff could find a better player with the 2nd round pick. Good pickup for Vancouver.

Something like that might work for Fiala depending on what other teams are offering. Supposedly the 2023 draft is going to be deeper so Guerin may like the idea of getting a pick that stands a good chance of not being a playoff pick.

They had "no leverage" in a McBain trade and somehow got a 2nd. Me thinks you have no concept of what no leverage actually means.

Oh I'm sure we're all guilty on some level, but listing a forward who just came off of a 79pt/70 game season and a 35pt/40 game COVID shortened season before that at $6m AAV as a "worst" contract... lol
You can argue Zucc's contract could be viewed as a problem for the Wild since they could probably afford to keep Fiala who is younger and produced more points if they traded Zucc, but in no way shape or form is his contract bad.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tbrew</b></div><div>Your point was that the production could not be kept up over the course of a full regular season. Separating the production out like that shows that he was unable to maintain it for the entire season, falling under a point per game outside of the few month window… which falls in line with his production over the couple of previous seasons as well.
It leans towards Buch being an easy comparable for other GMs to fall back on</div></div>
Uh.. no it doesn't because Fiala was over a PPG over his hot streak. During the rest of the season his PPG was much closer to Reinhart/Buch.

I mean I guess thanks for making my point for me?
Fiala over January 28th to April 29th, 54 points in 44 games. Math would seem to indicate those numbers are a better PPG than Buch and Reinhart over that shortened season so again not a comparable.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>EccE</b></div><div>I wouldn't say Grit is a "premium asset". He is a good prospect and a steal, sure, but premium assets are players like Holtz or Mercer. Same with Stillman. I'd rather have Holtz than those two. Zacha brings basically nothing. You can get middle-six players from the market for cheap (Freddy Gaudreau, for example).
<strong>Don't use Buchnevich as a comparable. It was a horrible trade then, it is an even more horrible one now. Plus, when Buch was traded, he had not broken 50 points in his career, Fiala had 85. It is not a good comparable. A trade for Fiala starts with a high 1st or an actually premium prospect.</strong>
You are trying to buy a diamond with a bag of groceries.</div></div>
The Buch/Reinhart comps need to die a horrible death. Their contract situations were the same as Fiala's, but Fiala is coming off of 85 points in 82 games. Reinhart was coming off of 40 points in 54 games (shortened season). Buch was coming off of 48 points in 54 games on the same shortened season. Any GM who looks at a those point totals and treats that the same as a player keeping that pace over a full season probably shouldn't be a GM.
"But Minnesota needs to shed cap, they have no leverage!" you say? I present to you exhibit A: McBain, Jack. Multiple teams were interested, so that gave Minnesota leverage to get a fair return. The same concept should apply to Fiala. Ottawa has been interested in Fiala for awhile. NJ has said they want to bring in an impact player and a team like LA that just made the playoffs, has assets Minnesota might be interested in and (most importantly) cap space to afford Fiala makes it entirely possible Minnesota gets a solid return.

Yeah, it's hard sometimes to gauge prospects on other teams because some fans create ACGMs where they're tossing away prospects like candy (often because of draft position).

Swap with Jets
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Windjammer</b></div><div>Yup, that's just it. If Scheifele is going out the Jets need a top 6C back or maybe an RHD and try to re-sign Stastny. It's unlikely the Jets give up their center depth for a winger, as that's just going backwards.</div></div>
I'm not sure what the Jets ownership is like and their appetite for a couple steps back, but it seems like if I were running the Jets (and wanted to retool) I'd be looking to move Scheifele to a team that is a center away from being a contender and has a nearly ready center to send back. An argument could be made the Wild could be that team, but their center prospect pool doesn't really match what the Jets might want back. Rossi isn't likely on the table and Khusnutdinov's KHL deal will keep him out of North America at least 2 more seasons I think. I'm blanking on anyone else they have in the system who could possibly be a top 6 type center.

I can't imagine Guerin would like to see a motivated Kevin Fiala a few times a year either. That being said, with the rumors that the Jets might look at moving Scheifele, who do they even have to replace him in the top 6 to go with PLD?

No one cares. This isn't the poster trying to predict the future, he's just tossing out an idea for people to discuss whether this makes the team better or worse. Unusual 3 way Boeser trade
I'll give you credit for putting an original spin on the Boeser/Fiala swap that people have kicked around. It would definitely make Minnesota a better team over the next 2 years, I guess it depends on what they think Firstov's ceiling is and how comfortable they are having Boeser being a UFA in 2 years when Boldy will be need a pay raise and money will still be tight. Interesting idea though.
