<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>except none of this matters because you pay a player based on what they did before they signed the contract. Kane and Toews were high 60ish point players and signed before they broke out huge. Same with Kopitar and lots of the other top tier guys. Matthews had already scored 40 goals (and 2 seasons on pace for more) and marner was coming off a 97 point season. Toews and Kane didnt wait for their better contracts, they just exploded in a far more convenient time for the team.</div></div>
Kane had 88 pts in regular season in 2010 and 28pts in 22 playoff games (Won the Cup), Toews was one of if not the best defensive forward had 68 pts and 29 pts in 22 playoff games followed that up by signing for 6.3M. This is the season they before they signed their contracts. What you just said is incorrect.

if you're going to trade Dermott and Kerfoot I feel like one of them could be used in the Manson Trade.
Nylander will cost more than that he's doing much better in Chicago and has a lot more up upside than Engvall.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>Nope, Nylander was paid right in the middle of his com parables. Matthews literally has no comparable for how he scores goals (IE the best player at it at even strength in the entire NHL), and the only close comparable is McDavid who decided on his own to take a massive discount so he really isnt a comparable at all.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JeffW</b></div><div>Only market value contract was tavares
Out of the big 4</div></div>
None of those contracts are market value unless you're comparing the bad contracts that are thrown around ruining cap for other teams. McDavid makes 12.5 and Edmonton is pushed against the cap ceiling unable to compete.
Same with SJS and LA with Karlson and Doughty. Did you notice that as soon as Kane and Toews both signed their Massive 10.5M extensions that Chicago started going out of their cap window?
Teams will have trouble competing with these massive contracts one, can be lived with but multiple is too rough. With the way the cap is now 10M is reasonable but when teams start pushing multiple players at 11M and 12M that's when the playoff picture becomes unattainable due to the inability to have role players on these teams.
Everybody makes the comparison to the percentage of Crosby and Malkins contracts to the cap back when they signed their deals to now with the new deals being signed. But the problem with that is that after signing those to contracts with the best 1-2 center punch in the league, a top 5 goalie and top end defenseman at the time they still went on a 7 year cup drought. Untill the cap went up and they were able to sign key role players like Nick Bonino Hornquist, ect. to replace the guys they couldn't afford after their first cup like Jordan Stall.
It's not that the contracts that are being signed are bad contracts, but its that teams with these massive are going to have to wait to compete on them until the cap goes up and they can get role players to be able to be fit in around them. It's one of the reasons Chicago was so good for so long, that they refused for a long time to give out big extensions, Keith and Seabrook used to be on great contracts. Toews and Kane waited for their massive contracts.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>Nylander, Johnsson, Kapanen, Spezza, Kerfoot and Muzzin are all on 'team friendly' deals. They arnt steals, but they are not even remote over payments. Tavares took less money from toronto than offered by other markets and Matthews contract is fine. Marner is the only over pay. And the funny thing about having 4 elite scoring players is that you do need to pay them like that, especially when they all come due at the same time. The only one of those Dubas had any control over was Tavares.
Next year Tampa has the same issue only 9.5 million of theirs is taken up by a goalie who isnt worth that. They are also paying 3 guys 5+ million to play in their bottom 6 most games. I'd rather over pay Marner by 2 million than over pay Palat, Killorn, Mcdonagh and Tyler Johnson by 1.5 million each, or Jamie Benn and Joe Pavelski by 3 million each, or Bobrovski, Matheson Yandle and Straleman by 3 million each.
at least the leafs players are earning their money most nights</div></div>
Muzzin is signed at 5.6 until he is 35. That is not team friendly, Johnsson and Kappenen have bridge deals that are market value I.E not cap friendly. Spezza is a team friendly contract, and Kerfoote is an over payed 3C, Toronto can not afford to pay their 3C more than 3M when their top two make a combined 22M. So the only 'Team friendly' Contract was Spezza.
Toronto screwed them selves with Kadri they had a great 2C (50-60pt excellent two way center) on an amazing contract that they completely got screwed up when signing Tavares. As nice of a player Tavares was to come along he completely screwed up their cap situation. That is why you rarely see big name free agents moving in the offseason cause it either screws up teams or teams that are competing cant afford it, and when a lot of money is given to FA's it tends to back fire, look at Pavelski, Backes, Lucic, Neal, ect. Instead of Matthews wanting 10M like Eichel, he immediately wanted more than Tavares. Then instead of Marner wanting 9M like Rantenen or even lower he jumped up cause everyone else was payed more. Without Tavares Toronto Essentially would have saved roughly 15M on the cap and would be able to bolster their defense and have a much more complete lineup. Instead now with each season they become more top heavy, they still have no defense and no plan going forward with how too deal with upcoming UFA's, they only thing they can do is pray the Cap Jumps up significantly, WHICH it will not do with the economy the way it is right now.
Either way back to the original topic of this conversation, Mikheyev the same as Zaitsev when he came over as a 24 year old will be getting a reasonable contract for 3 years similar but slightly less than Danton Heinen or he will take 1 year at roughly 1.5M to prove him self before another big jump. Otherwise he will go back to the KHL.

He has not gotten one team friendly contract thus far (Even for a fourth liner) and I really hope you are joking because half their overall salary cap is taken up by 4 players. Neither of which are their 2 most important players.

He'll get a 1 or 2 year deal because that's what players like him usually get when their rookie season is an incomplete, and he'll make around 1 million or so on it because it's a healthy bump. the real number will be closer to 900k than 1.5</div></div>
You do realize that before the suspension of the season, Mikheyev had 5 points in 5 games? So I wouldn't say all his points are from his "Spike at the start of the season". And that is true for players coming up as 22-23 year olds from the AHL but he played 4 seasons of pro hockey in the KHL, they got him to come over and if he signs for more than a year he will be getting at least 2M or he will go back. He will get Market value for a player of his caliber and Will get roughly 2M on a 2 year deal or 2.25-2.5M on a 3 year deal.

If he gets 3 years he will get a minimum of 2M. Heinen got 2.8 on a 2 year deal, Mikheyev will get 2.25 on 3 years because of the less games played. OR he will get 1-1.5 on a 1 year deal, but that has a good possibility of him getting paid in the Kapanen Johnsson range the years after.

Because across an 82 game season he'd be on pace for 48 points. That is called a bridge deal, similar to Danton Heinen, in place to give him less money than his pts/gp is worth due to minimal games played. LOL
Dermott will get more then that, will more than likely be around 2.5-2.75M

3) If they start trading core pieces its because they will be rebuilding not trading for more 30+ year old defenseman

Well for starters if he was that good he wouldn't be losing the starting job to Tistian Jarry and its definitely not a 23 year old former first round pick that tends to be one of the few bright spots on LA, and top prospect, and a second. IMO if you were to currentl trade Matt Murray right now not including Jack Johnson you would get a 1st and a decent prospect MAYBE. But since you added in Johnson that value goes down. Not to mention this would just never happen. LA wants to make the cap situation better, retain prospects and picks a do a quick rebuild like the bruins did in 2015. not trade for bad contracts.

I don't get why Columbus would trade Savard, Tortorella loves him so that doesn't make much sense and Kerfoot's value is not on par with Savard's he is a 3C Savard is a top 4 defenseman doesn't match. Also why would you trade Kerfoot, then sign Haula to replace him costing you more money. Doesn't that defeat the purpose? The defense still sucks (Even with Savard), and the forward group keeps thinning out every year.

Dermott was expected to take the next step which is to become a true number 3-4 D and that hasn't quite happened. Maybe 2 or 2.2 range for him but not too much more.
If Clifford wants more than 1.5 million, I'd rather fill that spot with a cheaper option.</div></div>
looking at his by game production the longest drought he went on was roughly 5 games. multiple 5 game point streaks, multiple multi-point games, I agree that due to his minimal games played it would cost less. That being said it sounds very similar to Danton Heinen. But if they plan on signing him more then a year it's going to be more then 2M. If they sign him 1 year the 1.5M is attainable due to his minimal games played but at longer term the money goes up.
As for Dermott I think it would be in the 2.8M-3M range but 2.2 would be acceptable. not 1.5M.
And with Clifford, look at previous FA established fourth liners that have been signed in the past few off seasons, Zach Sandford, Evan Rodruigez, Noel Acciari, ect.

that LA trade is never happening, first of all they don't want to give up Kempe, Secondly theyre not giving up KEmpe and taking on Johnssons contract, and Lastly theyre not taking on Murray and retaining quick. That would be way to much money caught up in goalies. Plus Andersson Dolan and a 2nd, there Chiarelli wouldn't make that deal.

What Are The Rangers Missing To Be Contenders
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>Dubois and strome aren’t in the same conversation. Without panarin, strome is a replacement level player. Dubois isn’t elite , but he’s an average 1C.
Lindgren is ok. He’s better suited for a 3rd pairing role right now , but it is possible he can be a solid 2nd pairing Dman in a few years.
The rangers have a few elite pieces and they’re exciting to watch, but without panarin they are a bottom 5 team. He has played a role in 41 % of Rangers goals. That is insane. In order to make it past the 1st rd , they’ll need to get a top pairing LD that is solid defensively and a 2C. Signing panarin and kreider indicates that they want to win now, so these moves should be made sooner than later. If not, the rangers will continue to be an exciting bubble team</div></div>
Don't get me wrong, I don't think Strome and Dubois are on the same level but they are in terms of offensive ability, and your argument was that it was because Strome is playing with Panarin that he was getting these points, well that's what they said about Dubois as well and Strome has roughly the same numbers with Panarin.
The difference between Strome and Dubois is that Dubois IMO will be one of the best 2-Way centers in the game within the next 3 years.
Their defense is just fine with one of Trouba or DeAngelo playing their off side on the top pair and Lindgren on the second. Their biggest issue with them being a bubble team is keeping Zibanejad healthy, when he's healthy they are by and large a playoff team.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SammyT_51</b></div><div>They have 4.5M in cap space + additional 2.5-3.5 depending on who and what for they trade from forward group. Dermott would take max 2.5, Mikheyev too, rest is below 1M contracts. Thats doable pretty nicely. As for defense.. thats an issue for sure. (I think they trade Marner for D and similar forward, but they might not). Dermott and Muzzin has been great. Holl has been very meh after he signed his contract but solid before, Sandin and Liljegren are developing still but they are promising. Rielly is what Rielly is.. offensive machine. They showed flashes that they can be defensively responsible team in tight games. Consistency in it? LOL far away. I think they would be able to get a D help this summer (dunno how) and IMO they would get Freddie signed in summer to deal similar to what Fleury signed with Vegas 7-7.5 for 3 years. Not a Bobrovsky/Price contract for sure. Campbell has been solid since joining Leafs. They also didnt jeopardized their future (but that Marner contract would sting a lot).</div></div>
Just to be clear. What you are suggesting gives the leafs about 8M in cap space. They have to replace 6 players in there lineup. 4 Forwards and 2 Dmen. If the replace all 6 with an average of 1M per player that is 6M leaving them with 2M in cap space. First of all they won't be able to replace them all at that little of value. Second of all their defense just got one heck of a lot worst. and lastly in the following years (1-2) they have to resign Andersson, Reilly, Lindgren and Sandin. They cannot do it, the leafs cannot magically have entry level contracts on their terrible blue line forever.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>Strome is a product of panarin. Panarin is a top 3 winger in the game and he has the rare ability to carry average players. Only other players that have that ability are McDavid, Tavares , and Crosby. Strome’s underlying numbers are terrible - he can’t drive a line and he’s one of the worst defensive centers in the NHL. The rangers should have traded him before the deadline, but if they plan to keep him around as a stopgap, they’d be crazy to give him anything more than a 1 year deal.
I’m not sure chytil will develop into a 2C. I see him as a very solid 3. The rangers best bet is trading for a 2C like Dylan strome or max domi.
The only rangers defenseman that is solid defensively is Adam fox. He’s a stud and he’ll be a top pairing D sooner than later - trouba was a replacement level defenseman this season and while deangelo is elite offensively, he’s clueless in his own zone. The rangers do not have anyone in their left side that is top 4 caliber and no one in their system is changing that for next season.</div></div>
people said the same about Dubois with Panarin but he is doing the exact same without him, and Strome doesn't even play full time with Panarin they've had him at 2C the majority of the season. IMO they have a good 1-2 punch with Zibanejad and Strome right now as Andersson , Chytil and Howden develop.
As for their defense. trouba , fox, and DeAngelo are all solid top 4 defenseman. and IMO Lindgren has been solid as well, plays physical, responsible in his own zone and very rarely coughs up the puck.

Just kidding. Ummm... I think really the number one thing is time. They don't have a lot of guys who are in the top tier at their positions. Panarin is there, Zibanejad is up there among centers, but other than that, not much yet. Kakko has the potential, Fox is a guy that I think will continue to climb, Shesterkin will be stellar for a long time.
But if you're looking for an actual answer about what I think they need to add to boost themselves to contender status... Centers (That depth is lacking) and Left D.</div></div>
You just named two players that are arguably top 5 definitely top 10 in their position. How many more do they need LOL.
The ONLY thing the NYR's are missing is TIME. They have elite scoring, they have top tier defense, they have strong goaltending. They need to let their young guys Lemieux, Andersson, Kako, Howden, Chytil, get a few years under their belt, grow together. Strome has been great at 2C this season and down the road I think Howden or Chytil will fill in there nicely. The have a very strong top 3 defense in Trouba, Fox, and DeAngelo. IMO when ever one of those kids has a breakout season they will surprise everyone and begin their string of deep cup runs again.

2.75M to 3.5M the difference is an entry level roster player, a fourth liner, it does make a big difference actually. and im not saying Calgary couldn't move his contract in the same way.
