welp so long hanifin
TBH I think it's a good thing we're not getting Hanifin at 8x$7m+. Lohrei will be a mainstay in the top 4 very soon and Lindholm is still a good top 4 D despite having a down year and could bounce back next season. He was playing fantastically well last year.

The whole series hinges on Boston's top defencemen shutting down Kucherov imo.

I'd rather keep Ullmark at those prices. He gets no respect for some reason despite consistently putting up very good numbers across several seasons and teams.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>It doesn’t matter in this case. If the return is middling picks, I’m keeping him and letting the successful goalie rotation continue. His value to winning is higher than a late second round pick and other secondary assets.
I don’t even bring this deal to my leadership team to discuss unless I’ve gotten indications that both Lindholm and Hanifin want to sign</div></div>
100% agreed, only way I consider this deal is if we are in a situation where we have a near-guarantee that a high-end UFA will sign with us *and* we wouldn't have the cap space to get that player otherwise. But even then that's not a great excuse to get a poor return.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Stadel</b></div><div>The second one, and its not to say they dont need veteran help. Its that they shouldnt be seeking players out simply because they are veterans. That doesn't matter if the player is no good.
They need good veterans, but good veterans aren't signing or waiving for Buffalo. So the next best option is to just ice the best team you can and be patient. Because the more they try to double down on cycling through guys like Lyubushkin and Johnson, the further they actually delay success.
If you look at the wins above replacement values for sabres skaters over the last few years, its almost always these "leadership" guys who are at the bottom. What do I care what EJ says in the locker room if he cant play?</div></div>
Yes I agree with all of this. They need someone who can play in the top 6/top 4 who has been in the playoffs several times. For example in this year's FA crop Stephenson, Marchessault, Pavelski, Guentzel could all fit that bill. But like you said, none of them are signing with Buffalo lol so it's a moot point.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>Goalie primes are generally their late 20s.</div></div>
For truly high-end goalies their prime typically starts in their late 20s and go until 33-34. Just my anecdotal opinion, don't have any statistical analysis to back that up. Regardless, there has been no evidence of Ullmark in particular slowing down

Are you trying to say because EJ wasn't a fit that Adams is a bad GM? Or are you saying that it proves they don't need veteran help? Either way I disagree

Would rather just keep Ullmark if that's the return. People forget he's one of the best goalies in the NHL and one season removed from a Vezina. He's right in his prime (which is typically later for goalies), and has consistently put up elite numbers on multiple teams. It's so rare for a goalie to put up the numbers he does without ever having a down year. If we're trading him to NJD it has to be a 1st+, or Mercer/Holtz involved, depending how the Bruins view those players.

The Sabres are weird because individually the players are all so good. Even the defence... Maybe it's a "team defence" issue? Maybe they need some older veteran players? I don't know anymore. But I've been a huge KA advocate since day 1 and I believe he will achieve long-term success, progress isn't always linear.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>littlejerryseinfeld</b></div><div>Do you think Colorado can afford rantanens extension?
How many teams can afford him?
How many teams can afford him while also having assets like a top 10 pick AND a prospect of Kulichs caliber, and Johnson who slots into your defense immediately on an ELC AND whose cap back to you is a 30 goal scorer?
If buffalo wins a round you get another 1st too
I obviously make assumptions here, but when I ask those questions no one answers.</div></div>
I can answer those questions right now:
1) Yes, easily. He's up in 2025, at which point they will have approximately $34m in cap space (if they don't sign anyone from today until then). So if the GM isn't a complete moron, he will plan all of his signings appropriately to ensure he can afford the extension when the time comes.
2) That is irrelevant from the Avs' perspective when they're considering of the value of the return. It only becomes relevant if they want to trade Rantanen and create a bidding war, but they definitely don't want to do that.
3) See 2. Also, a #6D and a $7.5m 31 year old winger (32 next month) who averaged a 68 point pace over the last 3 years and is locked up for another 3 years after this one has very low trade value, if any at all. The only high-end assets are Kulich and 9OA, but you're offering 4 quarters for a dollar in a sense.

Next year
Tanev is an okay player but his cap hit is way too high for his production. I'd say that's a pretty paltry return for one of the best goalies in the league, I'd want at least a 1st. Also Brodie has been pretty bad in Toronto this year from what I hear

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>What would you pay for Mittelstadt. Every time I ask a Sabre fan, they say Carlo. It sounds like Buffalo doesn’t want to pay him the contract necessary.
I’d start with Lysell, cap filler, and a 2025 #1 if that’s a possibility.</div></div>
Yeah Carlo is just a firm no, we'd be filling one hole and making another. I wouldn't touch the 2025 first, there's way too high of a probability we could be ass next year and then suddenly we're in a sens/sharks type situation where we accidentally gave up a top 5 pick. Lysell probably isn't interesting to the Sabres, given their glut of young forwards.
I think the only way that deal might make sense for both sides is if it's a 3 team trade, where we trade Ullmark to Team X, Buffalo trades Mittelstadt to us, and Team X trades something the Sabres actually want to the Sabres.

You mentioned Zacha and Coyle but forgot about Hall, Lindholm, Lazar, Reilly, Kase, Ritchie... If you look at his trade history, most of his trade acquisitions have played more than one season for us. Ullmark wasn't a trade acquisition so he doesn't really count towards this exercise one way or the other.
Last year was an exception because it was a clear "all-in" season, everyone knew we couldn't keep anyone we traded for but it was worth a shot anyway. In normal circumstances he definitely prefers to acquire guys he can keep for more than one season.

Zegras
Easy no from the Ducks. Gustafsson and Kupari will at best be bottom 6 forwards, and a 3rd doesn't add much. So it's basically Lambert and scraps for Zegras, and Lambert isn't enough of a sure thing to justify him being the main part of the return

Having 4 firsts is a little video game-y, but in principle I don't see why it couldn't happen. Pretty solid deals imo
