2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #4: Deadline is Approaching
In the scope of ppg ufa winger rentals, Guentzel delivered a monster return.
—-He’s painfully mid.—-
Excessively mediocre winger who is about to sign some deal that pays him over 50mil-70mil over term, possibly locking in multiple of those 35+ years - on the oldest team in the league - that’s a big nope from me.
You’d think a winger benefiting from Sidney Crosby would earn some hardware like all star game appearances, see their stats expanded a bit due to the presence of a goat every time they’re on the ice. And he has. His stats are expanded because his center iceman his whole career is a goat. And that expansion pushes him into the realm of extremely mid winger, “good enough to do the job”.
I don’t blame the penguins for not wanting to give him 8 years on his 30th birthday. I wouldn’t give him 4 when considering the team is already the oldest team in the league.
Give that icetime to the next wave. If the draft pick really bothers penguin fans, I’m sure a deal existed where you didn’t get the developing prospects and instead the magic bean. I’d have picked the prospect filled option with a 2nd versus a 1st. The difference between a 20-32 pick and a 40-64 pick is negligible, less than 5% haircut on nhl potential. If that sacrifice gets me another prospect that has an outside nhl shot, yes please. The curve is already flattening when we get to this point.
Pittsburgh got a non-broken nhler with term to replace an overrated guy due for paycheck who was leaving, prospects where atleast one is a a pretty sure fire nhler. That’s a lot for a rental right there. Then there’s more prospects and a pick. This is the retooling process. I can respect a fan saying “well I don’t like bunting”. Yeah, but you aren’t forced to sign him to age 38 and pay him 8 mil. Atleast you didn’t get some cap casualty or roster liability like the rest of us usually get, some Ryan Johansen you fastpass to anywhere but your locker room.
Plus, I mean, so y’all see hyman and Reinhardt right? Those two goal leaders look much more like Michael buntings than guentzels. I can’t be the only person thinking crosbys play around the net plus buntings play around the net equals fun.
I’d be happy - Thrilled - with a return like this for Buchnevich. I’d like the blues to perform the retool they’re talking about instead of getting stuck halfway thru and throwing their hands up.
I dare say the penguins maybe be better this am than they were last am.

A realistic outlook on the state of the franchise
You lost me with the colors but i'll focus on this:
<em>"unless all current core players reach their full potential AND GMKH creates <strong>2 elite players out of thin air</strong>, the Habs won’t be considered a perennial contender any time soon"</em>
My eye analysis is similar: To become contenders, Gorton needs to draft a top 6 center next summer (meaning Dach is better suited as 1st line winger IMO) and Hughes needs to get a big UFA top 6 winger eventually when the team will be ready, a la Panarin if you will.
Some say adding an offensive 1st pair RHD is essential. I believe a Ghule-Reinbacher duo will produce enough, plus Hutson/Xhekaj as PP specialists.
That being said there's nothing we can do about "reaching full potential" to become "perennial contenders", it is in the hands of the humans on the ice to get the job done.

Wow, love this. Really good job getting all this info together and making it easy to comprehend. Perfectly illustrates how far Montreal is from contention despite what so many fans want, building a perennial contender takes time and in order to do it right we need to suck for a few more years in order to balance out the prospect development curve (More Elite players we can get from the draft = less reliance on players like Mesar, Beck, Fowler, etc hitting their ceiling.)

That's a heck of an assessment and I think you nailed it tbh. We're currently projecting to be "good" but nothing Earth shattering, probably rank 10th-16th ish perennially if we don't get some elite talent going forward (factoring in the development you've suggested).

Right because this isn't supposed to be a simulation taking into account the real life factors in trade which include the market tendencies. I swear some here think they are trading the players in real life and are on their teams payroll. The delusion goes DEEP!
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Andy_Dick</b></div><div>Hes played every single game this year with big minutes. I'd be less worried at 29 years of age and hes missed a lot of time in the last 3 years which means his body has been able to recuperate much like Gary Roberts that retired at 30 and came back with a venegance. He's not a physical player but a very smart player with an active stick. To me he's the type of add that is a perfect compliment to elite talent.
He plays with plugs at 5on5 yet his producing not just points but fantastic relative metrics. 13th in stick checks in the defensive zone, best winning faceoffs % on the pk in the league, he does so many little things so well and that go unnoticed because he isnt a speedster but know more as the meme, BORING SEAN MONAHAN
I still dont move Monahan unless its 1st round pick plus. Pageau, Statsny, Copp all got more return than this and Monahan is more affordable with a bigger market share. The scarcity dynamic is also crazy this year when Lindholm price is so huge and Monahan has outperformed him statistically.</div></div>
Another trade deadline. Another year where nothing is learned from previous deadlines. The market sets the price.
Rinse, repeat.
95% of the forum gets it wrong and badly. Not just wrong but unironically thinking they know better while being wrong in every way. My favourite part of delusion.

So... We kind of have all the d-men we need. We just need to wait IMO, but also, we need to get them playoff experience ASAP.
As for Eichel... Whatever it takes I guess. I think we can pickup a center who is around 30 and as talented as Eichel in free agency or via trade. We'll see if Dach works out next season, but I would gladly add Elias Lindholm and argue that a center line of Suzuki, Lindholm, Monahan should be good enough to get it done, especially with center depth on the wings in Dach, Newhook, Evans.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GeneralLandro</b></div><div>I think 1 for 1 is super interesting for both teams honestly</div></div>
Edmonton has a reason to consider it. Montreal does not.
They don't need to move a contract (especially not if they are taking one back), they don't need a goaltender, they aren't contending.
Even if Anderson never scores another goal they have no impending cause to dump him. They'll overpay for an extra player with some usefulness until his contract expires or it becomes necessary to move him.
Everyone considering Anderson as a cap dump is ignoring the simple fact that Montreal does not need to dump cap. They are in good shape for at least a couple more years and have money coming off the books naturally during that time.

I'd rather keep Anderson.
I know they're trading Montembeault in this scenario, but they're already rolling three goalies. If you trade Montembeault and you bring back another goaltender you're not solving anything.
With Anderson, you get potential contributions and the possibility to shelter among 11 other forwards. With Campbell, you get zero contributions and you can't shelter a goalie.
He's shooting 4.3% right now in comparison to his career 11.5%. With 21 goals in 69 games and 19 goals in 69 games over the last two seasons, I'm more confident in a bounce-back than I am for Campbell,=.

Riley Kidney : Needs to play in the ECHL, I always said his game wouldn't translate to the pros. But gotta be patient and give him 2-3 years before making a statement
Brendan Gignac : I honestly did not even know he existed ... It's his 3rd season with the Laval Rocket, I think you are just not following the Rocket enough ...</div></div>
CBA man, why you always gotta be a hater?
I mentioned several times that this is only one game which I am basing my impressions on.
Yes I do not religiously follow the Rocket. It does not make my impressions any less valid. Some guys were noticeably good and some were noticeably bad. Also, and very importantly, you notice different things watching hockey in person than on TV.
I fully admit during the regular AHL season, I only watch clips of the Rocket, not the games. But I DO watch a lot of NHL hockey and I DO know the difference between players who are putting in a full effort and players who are not. I also DO know who is making decisions at a speed that is faster than the other guys on the ice, and who is making good decisions and bad decisions with their puck touches.
Frankly, I wish you were open to a civil discussion, but you are so toxic man. It's sad.

2023-24 NHL Season Discussion Thread #1: Here we Go!
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Saskleaf</b></div><div>Genuine question: is it time to consider a McDavid or Draisitl trade? It’s not working. And we know the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result</div></div>
I genuinely think it's time to let both go.
Ken Holland has failed in his mission to repair the Chiarelli Oilers and there isnt anough of anything to provide any long-term solutions.
1. Inappropriate contracts have been awarded not by merit but via loyalty and inept scouting. Kassian was an egregious overpay. Nurse persists as an egregious overpay. Hyman and Kane will likely regress into egregious overpays. For all we've been sold on players wanting to come play with McDavid, it appears that cash remains king when considering a relocation to Edmonton. As an ex-resident, I very much understand this mentality. A scouting decision led to Campbell being signed over Kuemper, not cash. This is a capped-out team that is likely only competitive for at most four more years, at which point a retool or rebuild is inevitable as the core pieces age out.
2. The residue of what used to be Edmonton's prospect system is lacking. Akey may be quality but everything else is middling at best. In four consecutive drafts, Holland and his team has whiffed on their selections. How different do today's Oilers look if instead of Broberg, Holloway, Bourgault, and Schaefer, they had Zegras, Guhle, Wallstedt, and Beck? This is no revisionist history, these are the names that went directly after the Oilers made draft their selections (in Wallstedt's case, I've just voided the trade with Minnesota. The next player selected was Wyatt Johnson, only reinforcing my point). There is no wisdom at play here, no logic worth following. The franchise has been stripped down to stud in the most feeble attempt at giving this team the illusion of competitiveness. Since the 2017 elimination to the Ducks, the Oilers have had depth issues up front, a weak blueline, and inconsistent goaltending. It is always the same song and dance, no matter the GM, coach, or personnel. Our picks are worth little and our prospects are worth less. The futures needed to buy talent at the deadline aren't here.
Moving Connor and Leon today does so while their value is at their highest: despite Edmonton's horrid start, the reputations of these two players alone demands a king's ransom. The Oilers have failed as an organization and wasted the best chance at eternal glory I have ever seen on NHL ice. It's over.
The only path forward that exists for a team with as many holes as this roster maintains is to start over entirely. No other move matters, as the Oilers will not find a way to solve all of their problems. Every AGM I've tried to run can at most solve 2 of the 4 issues plaguing this team at any time. There just isn't anything left and my bank of good will has run dry.
There's a growing part of me that regrets the Oilers not being forced to relocate to Houston in the early 2000s.

Well Dach might be done for the season
I don't think we need to panic yet, we were gonna be last place anyway. We have tons of prospects that we need to showcase/figure out what we're doing with so I think we take that silver lining and put it to use. Getting the guys in Laval some more NHL time is also good for development of the rest of the future, not to mention Slaf/Cauf/Suz/Dach/Newhook/Etc are going to need to develop the chemistry with them as well. Losing Dach is a tough blow but there's plenty of prospects who almost cracked the roster when there wasn't room, anything is possible.
Of the players you've suggested above, only Wahlstrom is one I'd target and I've wanted to target him for a while.
This is just the first of what is going to be many injuries for this team again. Let's see what the internal talent has to offer before adding anything less than a star player.

Should Montreal Draft More French Canadian ? Taking a deep look into 2013-2023 NHL Drafts
I also agree with the fact that you pick the BPA or that fits the plan, French or Other.
Nice job on your research but we can also do the same and pull all the French that were drafted high and did not bring the talent to NHL level
Daigle, Chouinard, Ouellette, Drouin, Morin, Gauthier, Poirier..... Just to name a few. Or if you prefer the latest Lafrenière instead of Stutzle, Byfield, Raymond...
The habs did lose one great opportunity to get a Frenchman recently by letting Dubois slip. We will never know if he really wanted to play in Montreal or what Hughes offered to try to get him. All i know is we gave a 1st and a 2nd pick for Dvorak, a 1st and a second for Newhook and a 1st for Dach. If we only take the two 1st round pics of Dach and Newhook and it would've most probably brought Dubois to MTL.
Nice post, but at the end, the managers have a business to run, French or not, they owe their fans the best teams on the ice

Something else that Montreal gained which is hard to measure. Respect from NHL players, shows the current management will consider the players needs, and that goodwill carries some weight when trying to sign free agents, which is important for a location that struggles to attract the big name players.

Slafkovsky i love but as #1 OA? even if we traded down to 2nd for a small return , we've gotten good value in the later rounds since Eric Crawford was hired in 2017-18 season.
Reinbacher same thing, if you trade down i think fans feel less robbed passing on better talent.
I mean we passed on 2 Elite Level Superstars for an All Star level class that might become workhorses.
All this relies on these 2 kids being Mature enough not to break here like Kotkanemi and Galchenyuk did.
Its hard to justify unless he lands a player like Lafreniere to make up for it.
Even though i consider AL kind of a let down he's french enough for fans to pretend he's better then he is here.
It'll distract people and when they have to face it they can say we passed on him to get Size and Elite Skill in AL and its Justified.
I dont even want AL here , i want Mcbain like Hughes did but fans wouldnt care as much or give him a pass as easy</div></div>
My feeling with the habs draft strategy is that they are not looking for the 100pts finest player which will eventually cost 13M$ AAV. With players like that, you get the Oilers who have two superstars... and no team.
When your top line is toped at 7,85M - you get to fill the 3 other lines with quality.
Yes you can have two players getting 60 goals each OR 6-8 players getting 20+ each OR 4-6 players getting 30+ each... which in some way, is harder to counter. Especially when those Superstars can always be signed through UFA... and are easier to attract when you have a great foundation (aka NYR with Panarin).
I agree that for fans, it's fun to have a Mcdavid, Mackinnon that break everything...

Absolutely, but that's the logic in Winnipeg right now that you are claiming they should avoid. The Jets already spent 5 or 6 years building this franchise when they returned, they've had one maybe 2 good runs - they don't seem ready or willing to tear it down again. In all honesty, they gave the Stanley Cup champion's a good series (until game 5) considering injuries to Ehler's, Morrissey, Scheifele etc.
I'm sick of the losing too, but in your own words, 3 years of pain for 15 years of being competitive. We've been bad for 2 years, we can handle one more I think.

Not ONLY to upset my fellow Habs fans
If PLD wants the most money and the most freedom, he is only signing a 1 year deal. Your trade idea falls flat when you realize NYR would have to shed a <strong>ton</strong> of salary on their roster to make this work. So when taking salary into consideration, you not only have to find a team that has the assets WPG would want but also that have the cap to make it work long term, not to mention the need for top 6 C. The list of teams drops significantly. There are teams obviously but it definitely drops.
Habs have all the necessary pieces to make a PLD trade work. That's not the issue. The question is do they really want to spend what it costs to not risk another team signing him long term if they don't. IMHO it comes down to the draft lottery. If the Habs draft a centerman in this draft, why would they pay full price for PLD? Smith/Carlsson/Fantilli/Bedard are arguably better for the teams long term plan anyway. The only thing that keeps bringing this rumor to the forefront is the province PLD is from.
If PLD was born in Manitoba, Habs would probably not even be interested. (in the sense that the Habs are rebuilding and don't need to be paying full price to get a legitimate top 6 center right now - they're still years away)
