Finding some depth down the middle
It's two years. They can front load the cash to get him to sign. and then move him in year 2.

I think they'll have to overpay a bit. He's #4 in UFA Defenseman goals this season despite playing for a very bad Buffalo team. He can play both sides of the blue line. It will take a DeKeyser+ deal to get him. They have the cap space to do it. 4 years is a little long, but would prefer 3 years. I don't think Montour goes for that though.

Yzerman likes him. He wins face-offs and is defensively responsible which will allow Raymond to be more offensively driven. But reality is that Rasmussen with Ryan and Raymond (it's the Pirate Line...RRRRRRR!!) is more likely for offense.

Yzerman buries the hatchet
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SadlyAnOilFan</b></div><div>So say Colorado flipped Athanasiou to another team for two second rounders or something. That would mean he didn't sign with them and thus they would get to keep their first round pick. All I can say to that is man I wish you were the real GM.</div></div>
Right. Let's be a little less optimistic for the return on Athanasiou's rights...
<em>Trade Deadline</em>
COL trades Newhook and 2021 3rd to DET
DET trades Athanasiou and 2021 3rd to CO
<em>Off Season</em>
COL trades Athanasiou rights and 2020 3rd to MTL
MTL trades 2020 2nd and 2021 5th to COL
So in essence:
COL gets rental use of Athanasiou, DET 2021 (VGK) 3rd, MTL 2020 2nd and 2021 5th
COL loses Newhook, 2020 2nd, and 2021 3rd.
So they get 3 draft picks and rental of a fast, goal scoring winger who's been playing on a team struggling to make plays in return for a good but not ready yet forward and one draft pick in each of the next two drafts.
But if Athanasiou is a key part to them getting to a finals or to the cup, they may decide losing the 2021 1st (which likely would be a late 1st) and not getting the 2021 3rd is worth keeping him for another run in 20-21.

The reason he hasn’t been called up is so that he played in the AHL. You’d have better luck getting Korpisalo from Columbus.</div></div>
With Jones out and a quickly thinning defense market, Daley would be good veteran to shore up the blue line. It's not like Peeke or Harrington are any better than Daley. They seem more interested in calling up Kivlenieks than Vehvilainen with Korpisalo out.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WellIDK</b></div><div>Avs decline that without a doubt. Newhook has more value than AA and then Detroit should also receive a conditional 1st? LOL</div></div>
I think you miss read that. Wings get a 2021 first (not a deep draft so far) if Athanasiou re-signs with COL, otherwise they get a third. COL gets a 3rd in 2021 if Athanasiou doesn't re-sign.
So as it's shown, Athanasiou doesn't re-sign with Colorado. So Detroit gets Newhook and a 3rd in 2021 and Colorado gets the rental for Athanasiou, a 2021 3rd, and whatever return they get for dealing Athanasiou's rights in the off-season. With MacKinnon and Kadri out, having a top 6 scoring winger/center added will help put the pressure on the Western Conference for the top spot. With MacKinnon back, you could slot him on the 3rd line with Nieto and Bellemare. He'd be an upgrade over Kaut for playoff run. If he helps in the playoffs, then consider re-signing him. If not, get what you can for his rights.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15</b></div><div>I’m a Frankie fan, but he has gotten huge goal support think that’s a bit rich but I get it.</div></div>
They'll have to over pay for a goalie in free agency until someone in the pipeline is ready. Plus they have the cap space to do it. They could give every skater on the roster $1M extra AAV and be close to the cap.
Goal support doesn't effectively relate to GAA and SV%. Puck possession by Colorado does though...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jfstompers</b></div><div>Mcaasic in 2 seasons is optimistic as a first pair guy and he'd need a defensive partner not someone like hronek. Maybe some like seider instead. I have real doubts cholo will ever be well rounded enough to be a second pair guy. Steve is going to need to add by trade or free agent to that blue line. They just don't have the pieces for a home grown above average d core.</div></div>
The season would probably start more like this:
DeKeyser - Hronek
Cholowski - Seider
McIsaac - Lindstrom (if he sticks the rest of this year and into next)
As McIsaac grows, he'll take more time away from DeKeyser on the top pair, but I think even in crunch time when protecting a lead, it will be DeKeyser and Hronek that will play the hard minutes, the 5 on 3s, facing the top lines like Colorado, Tampa Bay, and Boston. Hopefully by the end of 22 McIsaac will be top pair ready.

DeKeyser was playing well with Hronek before his back injury. I don't think McIsaac will be ready for top line minutes in 21-22 yet (if he regains his form) and I'd rather he continue to grow with Seider.
I could see this instead though:
#1 FA Defenseman - Seider
McIsaac - Hronek
Dekeyser - Lindstrom
As for who that defenseman is...

But if Yzerman made this move dealing AA for this we Wings fan would demand his head. Can't see Yzerman making this move he can get a far better return then this for AA whom needs a change of scenery elsewhere. Edit Arizona's 2020 1st round pick is #20 overall. Go listen to the recent "Wings for Breakfast" Podcast on the Athletic. They talk about the Wings bringing in a veteran on a one year deal for the bottom defensive pairing to mentor Seider and Cholowski. Arizona will need to move some money to take on Athanasiou. Moving Gologoski does that and the Wings have the cap space to account for it, especially since it's only for 1 year.

As the cap goes up...so do player contracts. It would be 8% of the cap. It’s the same as when Green signed but he’s 3 yrs younger than Green was when he signed

Voracek is only signed through his 34 year season. He's had 20+ goals in each of the last 4 seasons and doesn't look to be slowing down any time soon. He's only a year older than Tatar. Would be a good 1 or 2 line winger for 4+ years and still have scoring and leadership after that as a 3rd line winger.

Zibanejad isn't a 1C. He's barely a 2C. Yes he's young but the Rangers are in win now, not in 4 years when Zibanejad is in his prime. Vanek makes them better this year. Hayes is better and Lindberg would be better on the 3rd line than 4th.
As for the draft picks, they move down 10 spots while picking up a 3rd this year. Then they have the option to swap 4th round picks next year if Detroits is higher.
Is it a great trade for NYR? No. It's not a great trade. There's a bit of risk but it's not a terrible one either.

they had Pronger on the "books" for 2 years. I believe he was paid through insurance, not by the club. They'd pursue the same with Kronwall.
But if Pronger was paid a salary, it was only $500k, while Kronwall's actually owed salary $5.25M

Wasn't aware of the 10% rule, but if that's the case...Franzen could be traded to Arizona for a cap hit since they'll have 2 cap hits fall off after this season.
