Colorado Avalanche signed Mikko Rantanen (6 Years / $9,250,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>seb</b></div><div>
For example, Marner's contract is 10.893 million per year. That means he receives about 5 million dollars per year. Rantanen, on the other hand, receives about 5.4 million per year after taxes. Point receives about 4.2 million after taxes because Tampa has no state tax.</div></div>
This is actually a gross oversimplification. Players get taxed based on where they play each game. Your calculations are assuming they play all 82 games in the province/state their team resides in. So yes while Marner is taxed at 52% when he plays home games and against Ottawa, he is also taxes much less when playing his remaining 37-38 away games outside of Ontario much like Rantanen will be taxed more when playing games outside of Colorado.

St. Louis Blues signed Justin Faulk (7 Years / $6,500,000 AAV)
I'm ok with the AAV, but feel the term is a little long considering this contract doesn't kick in until the start of next season when he's 28.

Tampa Bay Lightning signed Brayden Point (3 Years / $6,750,000 AAV)
The 3 people that voted no are Leaf fans who are coming to realize that other GM's didn't take Dubas' deal of overpaying RFA's and now have their tale between their legs.

Can't complain about this at all. Dirt cheap for the next two years and allows management to see what kind of player he'll truly be by the time this contract is up.

I don't really see the Polak comparison. Polak was a pylon with big size and could through his body, Stecher is almost the complete opposite.

The Three Offers for Noah Hanifin: Offer 1
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pasha123</b></div><div>This doesn't make much sense for Vancouver, the player at 7 will be better than Hanifin. I don't see a trade between these two teams</div></div>
^This. The Canucks are going to suck the next couple years, so might as well retain the #7 and draft a solid Dman like Dobson instead of hemorrhaging even more assets for the future.

18/19 VAN
I think the Crouse for Hutton/Gaunce is an interesting idea. The Nilsson trade is also very realistic.
However, the Ducks trade doesn't make sense for Anaheim. They are already very deep on defense and with the likes o Larsson making their club next year and Montour and Manson looking for even more ice-time, I don't see where Tanev fits into their D-core.
I think it'll be tough to trade Gagner with his cap hit and even though Eriksson's contract is outrageous, he is still a very serviceable 3rd-liner and it's not as though the Canucks need to dump salary as they'll have tons of cap room over then next couple years.

Haha what I was thinking. Let's give Dallas a bunch of spare parts and they'll give us a Norris candidate Dman. Now let's give some even more spare parts to CBJ for their future 1st line center! And the cherry on top is to empty Carolina's cupboards BOTH our goalies and a guy nobody would take EVEN if the Canucks retained 50% of the salary. Everybody wins haha.

Pits-Van Blockbuster
This is an extreme overpayment by the Pens. I'm a big Canucks fans but if you breakdown the trade, I basically see it this way:
To Pens:
Tanev
To Canucks:
2018 1st round pick (PIT)
2018 2nd round pick (PIT)
2019 2nd round pick (PIT)
This is the price the Flames paid for Hamonic so is high, but possible. Then you have the second part of the trade:
To Pens:
Sutter
To Canucks:
Hagelin, C
Määttä, O
^This is ridiculous, Sutter is a 3rd line center. Trading Hagelin who is a serviceable 3rd line PLUS Määttä who is a fantastic top 4 young Dman is never going to happen unless Rutherford has a gun to his head.
I could realistically see the trade going down like this:
To Pens:
Sutter
Tanev
To Canucks
Hagelin
2018 1st round pick (PIT)
2018 4th round pick (PIT)
2019 2nd round pick (PIT)
With the Canucks retaining salary to make it work. However with Brassard being traded to the Pens earlier today they no longer need someone like Sutter.

TDL Moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RC333</b></div><div>Gudbranson peak is still top 4 Maybe higher as he's shown that he can elevate his game when needed just like in the playoff series in Florida.
Your argument destroys itself as u state that Gudbranson is older than Dermot but that just means there's more to look at. GM could see Gudbranson injury troubles in van and then look back to his Florida days and see how important he was there. Plus Gudbranson has been good lately. So he's still valuable and still a top 4 guy.
Dermot personally isn't even worth arguing about as I don't see him being anything but a 4-6 type of defenceman</div></div>
Gudbranson is a 3rd-line Dman on a terrible team. His underlying numbers are some of the worst in the NHL. He's only ever been a positive Corsi player once in his NHL career. This year he is sporting a 43.3% Corsi For which is 3rd worst in the ENTIRE NHL for Dmen (175th out of 178) that have played at least 500min. If people want to say he brings "grit", well Del Zotto and Biega are both throwing more hits per game than him this season so there goes that argument.
The fact that anyone thinks he is worth a 2nd and Dermott is clueless. The Canucks would be lucky to get a 3rd and fringe prospect.

....VS much needed aggressive dealing
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MajesticWalrus</b></div><div>I kind of agree. But let's be honest as hockey fans, we've all seen deals that seemed questionable to us before. Plus defence is the most valuable position right now, defense, centre, winger, goalie... In that order. So that's why the first few deals may seem less reasonable compared to when you go down the list. If I was the GM though I would try and get the most of these players but at the end of the day would want to see them gone even if it is just a second for Hutton for example. As for the goalie things, do you think Bachman for gudlevskis and nilsson for dell instead, I though of it later and I think it's maybe better especially since you basically agree.</div></div>
I think Bachman for Gudlevskis would make much more sense as well as Nlsson for Dell as those are much closer to lateral moves for the organizations involved. In year's past, I agree with you that there has been a premium on Dmen, but this year with Johnson asking for a trade and McDonagh looking like he is open, the amount of quality D available is driving the price down for B-level players like Hutton IMO.

....VS much needed aggressive dealing
As you go down the list the deals get more reasonable. I have to air on the side of most of these would never happen, here's why:
1. Gudbranson, a bottom pairing Dman is not going to fetch a top prospect AND a 3rd round pick, at this point the Canucks will be happy if they just get a 3rd rounder for him.
2. Hutton is entering his prime but not worth a budding prospect and 1st rounder in Juulsen and a 5th rounder, as much as I like Hutton, that's serious over payment by the Habs. He'll probably return a 2nd tops.
3. If salary wasn't a thing this might work. Pens are looking for a 3rd line center which Gagner could fill, but they are only $750k away from the cap and Gagner is $3.45M.
4. Could work, but I don't get this trade for VGK, they don't gain anything by taking on Dorsett's contract.
5. Del Zotto is simply not worth 2 2nd round picks.
5. Edler has a full NMC so that's a non-starter, but even if he did there's no way Dallas is trading their #3 overall pick for a guy who would play 2nd pairing minutes on their team.
6. I actually like this trade for both teams. The Jets have the cap space too to make it work.
7. I like this trade for the Canucks, but I don't know if the Coyotes would like to have a 1A-1B with Raanta and Markstrom
8. Could work, but I don't think NYI sees Nilsson as an upgrade over what they have now.
9. The Canucks would have to sweeten the deal a lot of get Dell from SJ. If Jones got injured and they only had Bachman as their backup they'd be completely screwed haha.

hm..
This trade makes no sense for Detroit. Why would they trade for Markstrom when they already have Howard and Mrazek who are just as inconsistent and non-definitive #1 goalies as Markstrom? That leaves Detroit having to bury one of these goalies that carry at least $3.3M cap hit (Markstrom, Howard makes =$5.2+/year and Mrazek=$4/yr) in the AHL and since they all have to pass through waivers I'm assuming the Islanders would pick any of them as soon as they tried to pass through.
That leaves Larkin (promising top 6 center) for Gagner (playing 4th line minutes on a terrible team) and a 4th rounder.
