honestly want to know if either team would do this
No chance.
Of all the guys who have been dealt for a known top-10 pick in cap era, all had term or other pieces attached.
2022: DeBrincat (1 year, then RFA)
2021: Ekman-Larsson (6 years), Garland (RFA), cap dumps
2017: Stepan (4 years) (with Raanta)
2013: Schneider (2 years)
2012: Staal (10 years)
2011: Carter (11 years)
Seth Jones, Eric Karlsson, Matt Duchene, Bobby Ryan and Phil Kesssel trades were all done a year or more in advance of draft, so they were not 'known' top-10 picks.

Any thoughts on Okhotiuk? In my eyes he was always a number 7 type dman with some grit. Would have been nice to keep around but probably lost to waivers if we didn't move him. Hatakka played way better than I expected him to in all honesty when he was called upon</div></div>
Hatakka and Okhotiyuk are exactly the same type of player, sharks dealt Okhotiyuk already lol.
They are ideal 7th D that can step in and play, but neither is layer are any more than that.

He looks like a legit 2nd pairing #3 D. He is solid 2 way guy but I don’t see him being a good top pair. Still he’s a super valuable guy.

There however is not a space on NJD to get him 15.5 minutes a night even strength+PP1 time, and I'm not sure he's a great fit into a defensive bottom 6 role.</div></div>
You 100% did and I was pissed we didn’t get Holtz. In retrospect he better fits our top 9 skill and style wise.
We also love Mukh as he is developing very nicely and then to add Musty who was a gift and has developed beyond my expectations so far, plus another pick this year that deal really worked out well for the sharks. And I have to believe the 2nd half of this season Meier is looking more like himself and will be valuable for you guys.

Ok sure, but there isn't a goalie on planet earth im moving for Nemec. Mercer, sure. But you don't need to move either of those players to get a good starting goalie that's available right now (Markstrom, Ullmark, etc.).

New Jersey Devils 2024 Offseason Discussion Thread #1
Teams I am rooting for in 1st round:
WAS > NYR (duh)
NYI > CAR (Palms, McLeans)
BOS > TOR (Zacha, Boqvist)
FLA > TBL (Kulikov)
WPG > COL (Toffoli>Wood, I guess)
DAL > VGK (Wedgewood)
EDM > LAK (Henrique)
VAN > NSH (Quinn)
(In case anyone was wondering)

For me, I’m not trading Swayman. Just don’t believe a player with his production and age is worth the risk of giving up. I don’t believe a team will pay the premium needed to get it considered

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>Yeah there would have to be a package that can improve us now. But usually the example of the young guy traded like that is when he’s hitting RFA. Holtz is still an ELC so I’d expect him (and this applies to Guhle to) to stay put for at least 1 more year.
Again, if we can turn Holtz+Bahl into for example Marcus Pettersson+Colton, you’d have me sold in a heartbeat.
You said Winnipeg 1st+2nd+3rd for Holtz? Or just 1st+2nd
If we could do Winnipeg 1st+3rd for Pettersson I’d be happy
And then like Bahl+2nd for Colton.
Not something I’ve thought about.
Maybe Holtz for Winnipeg 1st+3rd+Evans assuming we can make those other deals
Hughes-Foegele (Gritysuk??)-Mercer
Hischier-Bratt-Meier
Colton-Palat-Haula
Evans-Trenin-Lazar
Hughes-Nemec
Siegs-Dougie
Pettersson-Marino
Kahkonen
Allen
Yeah I think you’d have me sold in that scenario</div></div>
Colton didn’t have a great season so you would get him for cheaper than what they paid. Only Bahl would be enough.
The third is a minor asset in any deal including a first so it’s not really important if we add one or not

Trolls? If its who I think you're talking about, they come with more info on your own team nvm the Devs! Facts are pesky things but they are filled with them in the posts these two provide. And sure sometime those facts suck for your teams' asset, it doesnt mean its wrong, just that you dont like them!
Compare the above Markstrom trade to a ton of Bruin fans on this platform think Ullmark going for a '25 1st and a smaller pick/prospect to Jersey and is fair value.
Also because of the mismanagement of the TDL deal with Markstrom waiving and then CGY pulling the plug, has them at a disadvantage (@ least with NJ).

Holtz for Markstrom ($2m retained) was the trade Conroy agreed to in February.
Since then, Markstrom waived his NTC to New Jersey, but not for other teams. Played on sub-0.900 hockey. And seen another season pass.
So why are Bahl+1st added? If anything, Calgary should be adding.

Taking advantage of cap crunch
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CalvinKlein</b></div><div>I get what you're saying, but I think you're looking at this too narrowly and not seeing the big picture, because if you think Fitz is 100% safe even if they miss the playoffs again next year, I think you're wrong. This team just missed the playoffs by a fairly significant margin, primarily due to poor goaltending.
Were there other factors involved? Sure, but goaltending was the biggest issue and Fitz was the one who failed to address that position both in the offseason and during the season. Forget casual fans. If Fitz doesn't add a proven veteran starter in net and goaltending costs the team a playoff spot again, Devils ownership is not going to be okay with that. Failing to address a position of weakness 2 years in a row is a fireable offense. Plus, at the TDL Fitz alluded to making a big move in net during the offseason so I think he knows he's gotta do something.</div></div>
* primarily due to injuries
* secondarily due to inexperienced/ineffective blue line
We didn’t have the goaltending to make up for said issues, so it just left them exposed. But if we aren’t fixing the core issues, it really doesn’t matter what goalie is standing in the crease.
1. Address Blueline. We need to get a year older, a little stronger, a little more durable, cleaner on d-zone exits, more focused on puck protection. Hughes and Nemec looked great, but are still very young. Bahl has some very serious puck control issues that need to be addressed.
2. Add some size/speed bottom-6ers. We were much slower than last year…(with McLeod, Wood out of lineup and replaced with Nosek and Tierney). We also need some heavier play in corners and in front of net.
3. Get stronger, healthier, fitter. Fitzy talked about this at his recent media availability. A big focus in off-season will be physical preparation.
4. Add depth. As we saw this year when we were deep into our lineup, we need a deep roster, especially on blueline.
If we can do all those things, I think we will be okay with average-to-decent goaltending. But if we can do all those…and add a good goalie, even better.

Ideas old and new
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>I would prefer to keep Holtz ideally.
Colton cost a 2nd to acquire, for cap space i'd offer back what you paid.
I'm estimating what Georgiev would cost at a 3rd, could be off on that.
Overall, I'd offer NJDs pair of 2nds next years. or a 2nd+3rd for just Colton.
Some NJD fans have fallen out of favour with holtz however, and NJDs front office may feel the same, but I doubt it</div></div>
I can see why you'd want to keep Holtz, still plenty of upside there, and a pair of 2nds for Colton would be what I'd expect the Avs to be looking for if we're talking pure pick value for Colton. Have to remember they traded a 2nd for his rights, not a signed Colton. That said, I'd expect teams to give lowball offers to a degree with the Avs cap situation.
