SY traded Mantha in year 1 after signing him to a 4 year deal.
If they could get this trade value for Zadina you have to take it. Zadina is 23 and just about to the age where prospects are what they are. Zadina is 3/4th liner and not going to be able to stay on the PP2 unit....and you get a 1st rounder out of it. Grab it and run.

Zadina @ 4M for 3 yrs is ridiculous. He'll be lucky to get a 2 year bridge deal. Detroit is hoping a new coach can help jump start his career otherwise he'll be shipped out at the deadline for another young project.

Erne would get a private jet to the team that trades a 2nd rounder for him by Detroit's owner--and he's a cheapskate--so that tells you how bad that trade idea is.

Dubas Masterplan
The words Dubas and master-plan do not belong in the same sentence. But it definitely seems like a Dubas move to use up even more capital to trade for an offensive player. The Leafs would crush the regular season and be bounced again in round 1 because of their substandard defense instead of addressing their defense yet again.

Not Tkachuk but similar
#1 Larkin and Bertuzzi won't re-sign for pennies--you have to reserve cap space for both next year. After Dec 1st you have to worry about the tagging rule. Adding 6.5M for Klingberg and 8M for Dubois means one of them is going and SY wouldn't wait until the deadline to do it.
#2) No way Zadina is on the 3rd line and Suter on the 4th right now.
#3) You are out of your mind if you think Yzerman moves Hronek, Berggren, a 1st, a 2nd, plus Veleno for Dubois. He just signed Copp to be that 2nd line centre and now you want to immediately push him down to the 3rd line role? No free agent would ever sign in Detroit again.
If he wanted to sign Klingberg. He could. He has the cap space to keep Hronek too. SY has no problem trading a player even one he signed to a long term deal. (ask Martin St Louis or Lecavalier or Anthony Mantha)

2027 Stanley Cup Champions
Tarasenko's going to be 31 yrs old. He's a rental unless extended.
Bolduc's still in the Q. 55 goals in the Q doesn't translate to NHL as much as you think. Anthony Mantha put up 57 in that league and then had 2 seasons around 25 in Detroit and could never take that next step.
Kostin's a role player that is better suited for the playoffs than the regular season--which makes his inclusion puzzling except he is coming off his ELC and probably due a raise.
Late 1st and 2nd's aren't appealing either.
I think Calgary could do better elsewhere.

TKACHUK DUH

Quoting: Ledge_And_Dairy

You have to offer something of value

If you want equal value back you will never get it. Calgary lost all bargaining power when Tkachuk said he wouldn't re-sign and a list of teams he would accept a long-term deal with leaked (after having lost Gaudreau for nothing) after free agents signed deals and roster spots and caps were filled.
There is something of value:
Vrana = 20-30 goal scoring 2nd line winger under contract for 2 years at RFA pricing. In 37 games with the Wings he has 30 points with 21 goals.
Zadina = prospect (a prospect is one under 23 years old with upside) that Yzerman has kept for a reason.
Veleno = prospect that has 2 way 3rd line centre written all over him.
2024 1st round pick (conditions would mean it becomes a 2024 unless this year goes unexpectedly well for Detroit)
2024 2nd round pick
6/7th RHD under team control for another 3 years.

TKACHUK DUH
I think that that is actually too much from Detroit. Veleno and having a conditional 2023 1st plus the 2024 2nd are my issue. I do like the fact you included 2 middle six wingers as the Wings have too many right now (Vrana, Bertuzzi, Perron, Kubalik, Zadina, Rasmussen--he's a winger not a centre last year proved that-- Fabbri, Sundqvist, and Berggren). The trade might hinge on what Calgary see's Zadina's worth to be.
Calgary is in a weak bargaining position. The places that can take Tkachuk's cap hit (and has a roster spot and cap room without moving a player out) is limited. I think Gaudreau's contract proved that. I think Calgary should get back at most:
20-30 goal scorer 2nd line player + young NHL player with upside + NHL ready prospect + pick(s)
You gave them:
Vrana + Zadina+ none fitting that part + 2x high picks but then went further when you threw in another young player with upside--Veleno + 6/7th d-man + bottom 6 forward
Minor point: Calgary doesn't have that kind of roster room or need for those "extra" 4th line/healthy scratch players. If the goal was to clear some roster spots for prospects I don't think Yzerman would ever do that type of trade. He likes making those prospects win a spot.

Angst You Very Much
Detroit doesn't need RHD. Tyson Barrie would be a 3rd pair RHD on Detroit. He would certainly be behind Seider and most likely be beaten out of the 2nd pair spot by Hronek. Trading a young 3rd pair RHD for one leaving his prime years and making 3.7M more doesn't seem like a Yzerman decision.
In fact, Detroit doesn't need any more defensemen. They have 2 NHL ready prospects that might crack the lineup this year: 2021 1st rounder #6 overall Simon Edvinsson and 2019 2nd rounder Albert Johansson (who played pro in the Swedish Elite League the past few seasons). Yzerman likes making prospects earn a spot (like Raymond who was thought to be headed to the AHL before training camp last year but ended up 4th in the ROY voting). While Johansson may be more of a long-shot to skip the AHL and North American rink adjustment time: it's not outside the realm of possibilities. Then there is 2018 2nd rounder Jared McIsaac who finally showed the ability to stay healthy. Followed by 2020 2nd rounder William Wallinder. Plus 2020 3rd rounder Donovan Sebrango who put up a surprisingly good AHL season. With so many prospects a veteran bottom 4 RHD should be easily obtained on the trade market costing less than future draft picks.
Detroit just signed 2 defensive-minded LHD and if they really wanted another RHD---why waste the assets when one lingers on the free agent market and would cost them no assets as they still have cap space. They could sign him to a 1 year deal with a full NTC with the understanding that he picks his playoff team at the deadline.

Why do this instead of just renting the best cheap winger on the market at the deadline?
Hint Toronto armchair GM's trades should be for playoff grit or defensive d-men.....
...or on 2nd thought don't as Matthews is going into his walk year next year....I think one more early playoff exit means Toronto is trading him next summer as he won't re-sign with a team that isn't constructed right.

NYR 2324
You absolutely have to be joking on the Trouba trade. Even if the Rangers retained 50% of his contract Detroit would say no to that trade AND then you threw in draft picks going to the NYR too.
Maybe 4 years ago Trouba was in demand...but his value isn't what it used to be. He's got 4x 8M left with a full NMC the next 2 years and a partial 15 team the year after followed by a 12 team. That's pretty much an untrade-able contract.

...and I predict yet another 1st round playoff exit with that trade package.
Toronto needs another 9-10M offensive player contract like a hole in their head even if it gets rid of Nylander's 6.96M contract.
Hint to all Toronto armchair GM's: start trading for playoff grit and defensive d-men--not another 40 goal scorer.
...on 2nd thought don't--Matthews UFA date is coming up soon. Continue to try to outscore playoff teams as I'd like to see Matthews leave.

possible trades your opinion
Does moving out Tarasenko, Kyrou, and Scandella really help the team when only getting Tkachuk back?
You've already lost Perron and his 25+ goals and now you give up 30+ from Tarasenko and 25+ from Kyrou while getting back 40 from Tkachuk---that's a wash at best.
Next problem: you are trading away rental players and valuing them at retained value pricing. Tarasenko a 1 year rental at a 1st round value if not extending his deal. On top of that he's turning 31 and at the age of decline.
Final problem: the draft pick included is not enough. A 2024 2nd round is equal to a 2023 3rd round. That's a throwaway pick. Include a2024 1st round or a 2023 2nd round pick or skip it.
St. Louis' ability to get Tkachuk ended the minute Leddy signed. You'd have to move one of the top 4 d-men to ever make a Tkachuk trade work cap wise.

The cap numbers might work for Calgary---but they won't for Dallas.
Oettinger is due a large raise this year and Roope Hintz needs one next year. Tkachuk's cap hit would limit their ability to do both.

Not enough to get Tkachuk. Severson's too old and an UFA soon. Johnsson has significant issues and has lost value with his play the last two years--he also is too old.
essentially a trade should look like
NHL 2nd line 20-30 goal scorer + up and coming young player + NHL ready prospect + 1st or 2nd round pick
From what I see Holtz is the NHL ready prospect and you have the picks--but are missing the rest.

Devils
I think Calgary wants at least 2 NHL players out of any deal with 1 having to be a 20-30 goal scorer so Sharangovich would be another player of intrigue--the issue with him is that he could be the player running out of town in Calgary in two years---the other thing I think they want is a young player whose value has yet to be unlocked (think young 2nd pair d-man or 2nd line forward). Severson's too old and an UFA soon.
I also think those draft picks don't look as good as they did 2-3 years ago as the Devils shouldn't be close to the bottom of the standings in the years ahead given their roster.

Quoting: Octopus_Guy

Tkachuk is a great player that I'd love to see on the Wings but that's a quantity for quality trade that leaves no cap room for the Wings to extend Larkin or Bertuzzi.
That's a lot of assets to give up. Unless Wings can contend for a cup this season I wouldn't do it.
I don't like them trading away 2023 1st.
I feel like Bert would have to be a piece that goes to Calgary just for cap space.
I'd rather keep Bert. Bert is like a budget Tkachuk. He doesn't score as much as Matthew but costs half the price with similar gritty play.

Much rather have Tkachuk than 'lil Bert. Tkachuk will be turning 25 while 'lil Bert will be turning 28 this season. That's entering your prime vs having 1 year left. 40 goals and 100 pts is a huge difference to 30 goals and 60 points.
I feel like it is Bert or Vrana that would have to be part of the package.
Package would look like:
Bert or Vrana +
Hronek or Zadina+
NHL ready prospect if Zadina OR a Tier 2 prospect if Hronek+
2024 1st round pick
The Wings should not be trading away the 2023 pick if they are lottery bound given the draft's prize player.
Calgary was put in a position of weakness given that everyone knows Tkachuk is now going to follow Gaudreau out of town. This was done after free agency further diminishing the amount of trade partners available with open roster spots. Furthermore, the leaked list of Tkachuk's preferred destinations are a bunch of teams with little cap room OR teams that need to reserve cap space to pay guys that will be coming off club control and ELC's.
