I feel like the Caps are trying to field a competitive team just for Ovechkin. Not so much for being a contender

Still a good player when he's healthy. But risky considering the amount of games he's played in recent years. Decent gamble for a team like the Caps

I mean, Carolina has the room, but this is an overpayment. Good player though

Most surprising and disappointing teams so far
Wait, you consider the West division as a weak one? A division with 3 of the best teams in the league (Colorado, Vegas, St. Louis) and a couple of decent teams with Minnesota and Arizona. East is the strongest division, but North and Central are definitely weaker overall IMO.
To me the Sharks were #6 in that division so not really disappointing considering their goalies, lack of depth and the aging massively overpaid core. But in that division, no team is really underwhelming. I feel like you've overrated them massively. They were really bad last year and now they got in a division that replaced Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver with Colorado, Minnesota and St. Louis. Yikes, 2 upgrades and 1 similar team

Ottawa Senators signed Alex Galchenyuk (1 Year / $1,050,000 AAV)
Sure, why not? His (underlynig) stats in Minnesota were very decent and he could be a 18G 40P guy. I'm not a fan of him, but this contract won't hurt the Sens

How to fit under cap
How does this help Tampa in getting under the cap? Adding a player on the LTIR doesn't mean you can spend an additional 5M. Salarycap stays at 81.5M, but the AAV of players on the LTIR doesn't count against the cap (as long as they're on the LTIR).
Your team is still nearly 5M above the cap and your RFA's will cost more than you have. So this doesn't work at all

Yzerman: 'Sign a cheap shortterm contract at Detroit, play some big minutes and we'll trade you at 50% retained to a contender at the TDL'
Gotta be something like that. Detroit is definitely not the most interesting place for those UFA's to sign with. Good deal once again for DET

San Jose Sharks signed Kevin Labanc (4 Years / $4,725,000 AAV)
It would be a good deal if they gave him this contract last offseason. Now it looks weird after that down season. But we all knew that discount would lead to a contract like this. I doubt this deal will look good because my expectations of the Sharks aren't that high tbh. But it's definitely not their worst contract

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafs_and_Sens_Fan</b></div><div>Man the Sens traded for Gudbranson when Borowiecki was half the cost...</div></div>
That's the reason why they went with Gudbranson I guess. They need to reach the cap floor and I expect most of the offensive gaps will be filled by ELC guys

Don't like this deal so much. Holtby has been very inconsistent for multiple seasons now. 4.3M is less than expected, the AAV and the term are looking fine but still. I just don't like it

Good signing. FLA was unhappy with their defense, especially the RD, so this signing makes sense. Maybe it's a bit too much but I'd say good deal. Nutivaara and Gudas as defensive-minded RD are solid additions to a pretty weak blue-line.

(ANA/OTT) - Gudbranson for 2021 5th round pick (EDM)
OTT has to add some salary to make it to the cap floor lol. They'll probably add a lot of young players on ELC given their current forward group. Gudbranson is a fairly cheap option for the Sens: 4M cap hit but 3M actual salary.

Tbh, I think L. Brown and Brannstrom might get traded to add a high end rightshot winger.
White moves to RW. Formenton 2LW and Norris 2C (played really good together at the AHL) and Thomson instead of Brannstrom

(PIT/OTT) - Murray for Gruden and 2nd round pick
I guess it's a fair deal. Sens got plenty of middle 6 lefthanded wingers and they picked 3 players yesterday so they aren't giving up anything that valuable to them. Murray is very inconsistent, but he'll probably be a good 1B goalie with a good playoff history
But to be honest, I think this trade will look bad this year. Murray is inconsistent and the OTT defense isn't that good right now. But in a few years with a top 4 like
Chabot - JBD
Sanderson - Thomson
And some decent 3rd pairing prospects as well, I think it will look good for Ottawa in a couple of years when they'll try to be competitive

Pass. Even at 50% retained the Avs shouldn't go after Price. Good luck trying to extend Makar without sacrifising depth. Especially after giving Cernak 4M lol.

Bad moves for Ottawa. Adding Bozak would be fine, but Anisimov has to leave then. Norris should start at center. I think Logan Brown might be traded before next season after they select a center (Byfield or Rossi) in the upcoming draft.
There's no use for Van Riemsdyk. Ottawa are still in rebuild mode. Should give someone like Formenton some ice time instead of paying a lot for James. Not worth giving up a 1st for at least
Oh and Neal instead of Batherson is also bad management...

(MTL/CAR) - 2020 5th round pick for Edmundson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsForEver</b></div><div>He averaged 20 MInutes TOI/Games with St.Louis and 18 with Carolina. Those aren't 3rd pairing numbers. I'm not trying to argue he's a star here, but he's also easily worth a 5th round pick. He was a big part of what Carolina got for Faulk (I know Bokk was the main piece), Montreal is gaining value here while Carolina is losing value. You can argue about Carolina letting Edmundson go in FA, but that's because they can't manage their cap situation.</div></div>
He got 15 minutes of ES TOI. Slavin, Pesce, Hamilton and Skjei (though in 7 games) played over 17 minutes at ES. And Edmundson played on the 2nd PK unit (averaging almost 3 minutes still, it's why he still played 18 minutes per game)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsForEver</b></div><div>Canes just traded a 4/5 guy for a 5th. That's poor asset management. Bergevin just traded 1 of his 2 5ths for a 4/5 guy and still has 11 picks in this years draft. That's good asset management</div></div>
You're overvaluing Edmundson. He's a 3rd pairing player with really bad underlaying stats at ES. He's a 3rd pairing PK player. Carolina wouldn't resign him anyway because they got plenty of better defensemen and he'll be an expensive 3rd pairing guy. Montreal traded a 5th for a FA. And the Habs just gave him leverage in the negotiation process since a team wouldn't trade for his signing rights unless they really want him

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsForEver</b></div><div>It gives Montreal 3 weeks to sign a guy who they likely already have a handshake agreement with.</div></div>
There's no reason to buy those 3 weeks if you know he's going to sign with you anyway. So no way there's a handshake agreement. Or it's poor asset management

Well it isn't weird that his GA/60 minutes is better than Slavin and Pesce. They played more minutes (like +3 min ES and .5 minutes SH) and vs better competition. Edmundson got 3rd pairing minutes at ES with way worse underlaying stats than any other defenseman on the Canes. Sure, he can play valuable minutes at PK. But he's not going to improve their defense overall and because of this trade, Edmundson got the leverage during the negotiations
