Fair point, but for the Canucks It's more to clear the roster space. They have cap trouble anyways, so it's not really about saving money as it is making room on the roster to get someone like Baertschi back up. Johnson could help the team right now because Edler/Tanev have a history of injuries and I think Johnson could be fine in that #6 spot as insulation for this season. He would at least provide something that Eriksson is not, that's all. The money is irrelevant for the most part in this deal.

Basically, Johnson becomes a more expensive Alex Biega and for this season that could prove to be somewhat valuable. And in the summer, should the team want to move him, his contract has no restrictions and a smaller hit or he just plays in Utica. The Canucks won't get anything tangible back for Eriksson and he is just $6m in cap space being wasted. I would rather pay $5.75m for a guy who will play some minutes in the 6/7 role than someone who is sitting in the press box every night and contributing nothing up front, while a guy like Baertschi is getting 2 pts a night in the AHL and they can't make room for him.

Eriksson still can still kill penalties and the team has a glut of defensive forwards who are younger and cheaper. If given the right centre he might still be able to score some goals, but he is so unhappy here it's reflecting in his play. It's just time to try and cut bait and make something work on the trade front.
