<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TopLineTom43</b></div><div>Well Eichel was buffalos only superstar and he was overpaid for that reason. Realistically he would make 8.5-9m. Again the market isn’t set I stone. Matthews should have the wherewithal to understand that Eichel could make more money bc they didn’t have as many talented high caliber players to sign. Matthews then set the bar for Marner who also got overpaid. It’s a slippery slope. And Matthews isn’t worth 13.5 million that’s just silly. He wanted McDavid money but Matthews isn’t even On McDavids level. McDavid is miles better and that’s not an insult. McDavid would compete with Crosby when Crosby was 21. Nylander isn’t a bargain he isn’t overpaid he’s fairly paid. Marner contract would be hard to move imo. You make 11 million you better score 100 points.</div></div>
All these rational takes are killing me. This isn't the place for this nonsense

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TopLineTom43</b></div><div>Only thing I have to say and I honestly don’t watch enough leafs hockey so correct me if I’m wrong. Kadri was that gritty guy you absolutely hate to play against. He was able to be a #2 center used as #3 but he was that guy that you had to have your head up around. Honestly if he played smarter In The playoffs you might have beat Boston. I would rather have him. Guys like him are priceless. I’m a Tom Wilson guy (boooooo) but that type of player is priceless. When he can play all 3 zones and all 3 situations.</div></div>
Yup, that's who Kadri was for the leafs. The downside last year is that he struggled a bit in 3c role with reduced time and role. For the life of me I can't figure out why we never tried him as at lw with AM and Willy. He's exactly what they need there and for the reasons you point out.
But if we did that, then we never would have landed Kerfoot, not too mention getting Barrie at 50% cost (even though he's having his struggles to date). Gotta to give to get, I guess. I miss Kadri tons, and I agree that we need more of what he brings, but I'm really impressed with Kerfoot.
If we ever get a Johnson/Kerfot/Kap line then I think we have one of the best, if not the best, 3rd line in the league. I'd like to see Mikheyev and Johnsson switch lines, although that might not happen just to keep Soupmans contract extension within reach..

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TopLineTom43</b></div><div>I Mean I understand the business end of it. I really do. The part I don’t understand is that these young guys come in and want to get paid these ridiculous salaries and wonder why their teams arent good. Who would babs want Barrie and kerfoot or kadri? Brown and zait or Ceci. They had to change ..what 1/3 of the roster to adjust to the massive dollars Matthews and Marner are making. It’s just greed but again money puts a roof over your head no Stanley cups.</div></div>
Solid assessment of the current situation. Two things though:
1) I don't think these kids are wondering why they're struggling at all. They know the implications their salaries have on their teams cap, and what that's meant for the roster. It's why, though, that I wonder if they ever wish they woulda took less. I doubt they do, but I wonder..
2) I'm a big Kadri fan but I actually think the leafs make that trade all day long. Kerfoot has been super impressive in the 3C role, and doing a better job of it, at a cheaper hit, than Kadri did last year. Losing Kerfoot for an extended period of time is going to sting, methinks..

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TopLineTom43</b></div><div>I mean they can obviously win but you need to buy into the coaches system and leave your ego at the door. Look at Ovechkin and Trotz. He needed to learn to play defense. Could you imagine if those to couldn’t get on the same page. We won 2 press trophies and a cup In the last 3 years with him. Also when you have guys getting paid that much you need to draft and develop perfectly. No real room for error. Your 1st rounder need to play like it and you get the point. Imo they have draft really well luckily for the leafs</div></div>
I keep agreeing with you. With pretty much all of this one, especially the part about players and coaches being kn the same page.
I actually think this is a pretty big issue in Toronto. And I thinks it gets compounded by the fact that I don't think the coach and the GM are on the same page either. But that's just my take on it..

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TopLineTom43</b></div><div>You sound surprised. I just want to be clear I’m not insulting the leafs or their players. I just question the thought process in signing them at the price on both ends. More on the players end. Do you want to get rich or win? At the end of the day wins don’t feed the kids but what’s the difference between 88million and 75 million? I mean when is enough money enough. Greed is toxic</div></div>
Oh, I didnt take that as an insult at all. And no, I'm not surprised. I think the two of us are pretty much saying the exact same thing.. yup, i agree completely, greed is incredibly toxic.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TopLineTom43</b></div><div>I guess that’s your opinion. I personally disagree and the evidence is obvious when you look at the records. Coaching is the easy excuse. Capitals blamed Trotz before he won. Look at the islanders now. I personally was blaming him. Toronto’s defense is deeper? Goaltending is deeper? Offensively Toronto might be more talented but they are extremely soft. Boston is a harder team to play against. bostons defense is much much better. Their goaltending is much better. Starting and backup.</div></div>
You're not wrong with this at all.
The only thing that I'd add for context is a nod to the age difference between the teams cores. I'd kinda expect that Toronto should be trending up while Boston likely trends down as the leafs young core matures and Boston's start to age more. At a certain point the two will likely converge. Either way, I think we're set up good for lots of Bruins/Leaf hate for awhile to come..

Boston’s players signed very fair deals and they set a standard for the rest of the team. Guentzel in Pittsburgh is a lot better than Nylander and signed for cheaper to help the penguins. Guys who want to win understand that they can’t sign 10-11 million dollar deals. Players want to be rich then win if possible. I don’t blame them. It’s a business at the end of the day</div></div>
You keep posting things that aren't wrong at all.
I half wonder if the leafs three young stars ever wish they didnt demand every penny they could get. I doubt they do, but I wonder..

I must be the best GM ever
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TopLineTom43</b></div><div>Krug is a ufa after this year and he would probably get the Bruins a 1st and a top prospect. So remove Dowd and add a 1st. Obviously caps aren’t buying at this price and Bruins aren’t seller. But alexeyev is our best prospect.
Same age Backstrom or Barkov I’m going Backstrom every time. The age difference would make Barkov more valuable. Also Backy is a ufa and untouchable. I would pay my own money to keep him in DC
Jensen for a 2nd is a steal. He’s a Solid puck moving top 4 rhd with a low cap hit and term. Toronto Would be wise to sign and lock up some solid cheap defense.
Puljujärvi Has shown he’s not a very good nhl player but he has value in the form of potential. Maybe add a lower level prospect and they do this. Again caps don’t need him at all</div></div>
I though if Boston wins the cup they let Krug walk then I googled Krug leaving Boston and he is quoted by several reputable news sources saying he would take a discount to stay in Boston. I don't think you have to worry about Backstrom for Barkov because he is the face of the Panthers now so they won't trade him. As a Wings fan I do like Jensen but I think he is #4 or #5 Dman excellent skater but he is to hesitant at times to take chances to rushing the puck or making the difficult pass that could lead to a goal. I agree Puljujärvi doesn't have a whole lot of value right now, but Edmonton still wants a lot for him In the last week or so they have proposed 1 for 1s with AA, Bertuzzi and Zadina. I understand wanting to get as much as possible for a former #4 OA pick but the aren't going to get a return like that until Puljujärvi can prove he can be that player at NHL speed.

Mikheyev is on pace for 17g and 47p playing with Auston Matthews and William Nylander as a 25 year old? Unless he picks it up, the Leafs trade his rights in the offseason for a 2nd and move up Tymashov, Kapanen, Petan, Moore, or Bracco. Jensen was recently traded for two 2nds.
