Can Sens make the playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfkst1</b></div><div>That's not even at all. It's an absurdly stupid move for PIT team to make. Trade for a one year rental in a rebuild while eating $15m in dead money over three years. Start adding futures for that one.</div></div>
In this trade, PIT gets a<strong> younger, better </strong>player at a <strong>cheaper </strong>cap rate <strong>for next year</strong> that is <strong>very tradable</strong> at the deadline or resignable to a long term deal. The retention is the cost of having an old, overpaid player who is worth a 3x5M, not 3x8M or 3x6M.
Considering PIT didn't make playoffs this year or last, the team needs to go big for 87 or watch him lead a bad team into his anti-climactic retirement.

It would be a more even trade if it were Karlsson at 50% which is 5M retained making Chych effectively cost 9.6 vs 4.6 next year [4k savings over EK] but a problem the year after if 87 wants to stay

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BigBadBurke</b></div><div>well i highly doubt they view him as worthy of a 1st so an early 2nd plus a local player seems more than fair. If not accepted maybe an OS would be the better route as the compensation there would be equal or even less than what is being offered here</div></div>
they likely match the OS
it's almost like they want him going forward and will compete for a playoff spot next year

A top 5 pick is what you HOPE becomes Zegras... and his contract is quite good still. Ya'll MTL fans are expecting way too much of draft picks

lol Duclair and Gust decline those deals bc of term at those cap hits... what do you think .5 ppg players make exactly? Drury is entering his prime ffs
Guentzel doesn't really drive offense on his own to be worth the 8x8+ that he'll get
best bet with him is to sign n trade the 8th year to the team he wants to go to for a 3rd rounder before the draft

lol no
6OA is the player you hope becomes Z or better, which takes 2-4 years minimum. Barron is arb eligible next year and isn't a top 4 dman on a good team for the next 2 years at best. At worst, he's a good 4/5 Dman... Z is a playmaking center right now.

Was the offense that much better with Guentzel on the team?
Don't think Tanev signs that deal, and it might be worth keeping Graves and signing a depth winger instead of Guentzel and have a stacked blue line if you get Monahan for C depth

The next step
It makes no sense to retain on Schwarz or for him to go to Zona. Sale feels like a bust [for a 1st rounder] so its 2 1sts and a 3rd rounder for Keller... prolly not enough since he doesn't need to be traded. Zona wants to compete next year, they almost did this year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LordStanlersCup</b></div><div>AFP analytics has stammer's projected cap hit at $6,304,375 for 3 years and when you factor in the no state income tax and the fact that he wants to stay in tampa I think 5.5 at that term is pretty reasonable. They could do something like 8 years and he doesnt play out the end of the contract but I figured I might as well make it 5 because he said he wanted to play 5 more years and I wanted to make it fair. Jeannot just makes too much money for the bottom 6 and him and Sheary are the only tradeable assets that could be moved to make space for Hanifin.</div></div>
And we know that whatever analytics says always comes true, right? There's never a bidding war, even when a player "wants to stay" which is in like 95% of statements of players who end up leaving their team

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Subbanator7667</b></div><div>I think the lottery odds adjustments made a couple years ago are fine
Most likely to see playoffs expanded so playing with how teams use LTIR would likely need to be refined when that happens. If they go to a play in or add two spots in each conference then teams are in for a longer playoff run and you'll have less teams selling at the deadline.
An adjusted salary cap is long overdue, it's way to easy for southern US teams to sign FAs and keep the rentals they trade minimal assets for at a deadline</div></div>
It's not about odds.... it's about transparency in lottery "winning" process

Last year Walker was one of the best PKers on LA. You can't really use the "bad team" argument when Peeke is literally the one dragging their PK down the most
You can disagree on the trade value or targets, Im just talking about Walker and Peeke's PK abilities</div></div>
lol PP GA/60 is hardly a measure of "best PKer" which using your 1 min/g threshold I see last year for LA was Edler?.... and again, he played 40s of PK in 2 of LA's playoff games last year
Peeke is a niche role filler which is useless on CBJ, let's see him on CAR, and hopefully Walker lives up to hype of this year because COL doesn't feel like a better team now

Walker was the best penalty killer on PHI (<a href="https://www.nhl.com/stats/skaters?report=penaltykill&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20232024&seasonTo=20232024&gameType=2&playerPlayedFor=franchise.16&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&filter=shTimeOnIcePerGame,gte,1&sort=a_ppGoalsAgainstPer60&page=0&pageSize=50" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">3.07 PP GA/60 which is the lowest goal against rate on the team among regular penalty killers</a>) who have the #1 ranked PK in the league
Like its not even close...</div></div>
It's almost like CBJ are the worst team in the conference and Philly are a playoff team
And that sample size is literally half his teammates mins
Peeke is a good shot blocker, big and physical, exactly what you need on a playoff 3rd pair playing 13 mins a night with a competent partner and forward group and exactly useless on a team like CBJ where no one is moving the puck outside of Werenski
Walker moves the puck better but not well, has played with better teammates this year, did not crack LA's playoff roster last year, and isn't a piece that COL really needed to over pay for in a deal with RyJo and a '25 1st rounder
The Peeke trade for a <strong>2027 </strong>3rd, it's only 1 example of a better trade, let's do the Tanev deal for a 2nd + DD prospect at less than half the cap hit of Walker... Get Tanev for COL '26 1st + Malinski? is so much better
Get Tanev at 1.125M and [you dont <strong>have </strong>to] dump RyJo to another team now or in the summer or next year, so many cheaper options
Calgary sold Hanifin at a 1.237M cap hit for a '26 1st and '24 2nd ffs lol
Terrible value. Bad trade.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>COL absolutely can run with VGK this year, honestly regardless of standings I think they are the 2 best teams in the west.</div></div>
Not after this TDL and injuries are a part of the game, hence depth always matters
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>Oh I agree grading the TDL at the TDL is kind of pointless most teams obviously end up losing in the long run, but teams that have added something significant off the top of my head that help contribute to championships, VGK adding Barbashev last year, COL adding Lehkonen and Manson, TBL adding Coleman. Conversely there are a litany of teams that did big things TML last year instantly pops in my head. But I do think there is such a thing as doing to much.
COL last year got double hit losing a lot because of the cap and then getting hammered by injuries, they should have beat Seattle but they weren’t winning the cup with no Landeskog, no Nichushkin and no 2c.
This year my 8 would be, in no particular order VGK, COL, DAL, EDM, FLA, CAR, those 6 without a doubt then I would probably have VAN, WPG, NYR, and maybe LAK. No team is perfect and I don’t see a 2022 Avs team in the field and all these teams have legit question marks about part of their games, and it’s possible the teams in the East benefit the west being a gauntlet.</div></div>
EDM prollly loses in first round even with Henrique at 3C because their team d is just that bad
Van prolly loses to any of LAK, NSH, VGK
Jets lose to COL if playoffs start today
In playoffs, PP < PK and team d wins championships which includes moving the puck up ice

Mayo had positive value at the time of that trade because he was on a good NHL contract, he could easily fill in on a 3rd pair [VGK sent Korczak up instead?].
Weber didn't have negative value due to his pay vs insured value in his contract's last years for a cash strapped team like Zona
