Swap out Gawdin (why does everybody keep penciling him in? He's low on the depth chart) for Grant and this is how I'd see the lineup opening night. I expect we'll keep both Mahura and Benoit as to avoid exposing either to waivers but I am now way more comfortable that neither is expected to be an everyday player. But I'm happy with this roster. With good health and certain players playing to their potential (looking at you Comer) this team can compete. If we had a better coach I'd go even so far to say we should challenge for a playoff spot but Eakins has to prove he's a capable coach at this level because so far it sure looks like he's not.

Not sure Zellweger and Gaucher make the opening night roster but I do think Zellweger gets 9 games
If Zellweger makes it, he would play top 4 and Verbeek would need to trade for a big defenseman to pair with him because I don’t see much good coming with being paired with either Klingberg or Shattenkirk. I do think offensively watching JD and Zelly play together would be a lot of fun offensively, defensively it would be mighty suspect</div></div>
What's wrong with being paired with Klingberg? We didn't pay him all that money to be a liability out there. I mean, the same thing for Shatty. It's not like this kid will be given the green light to pinch every shift or anything. All of our vets are perfectly capable of pairing with a young d-man. We sure as hell shouldn't make a trade just to protect this kid for less than 10 games. If he's capable of handling the NHL beyond that, then the guys we have now are up to the task of playing with him.

Why is everyone so convinced Silvy is still hurt? If the season were a little longer he'd have probably made it back before it ended. I have no doubt he'll be ready to go once the season starts. And I would be SHOCKED if Gaucher makes the team out of camp. I don't expect this kid at this level for a couple of years. Stranger things have happened I guess but there's no reason to pencil this kid in now.

Zellweger Out of Camp
I'm not sure Europe is a realistic option for Zellweger since those leagues start up soon. If the Ducks were in favor of that I think they'd have him signed somewhere by now. Not to mention that's pretty rare, if not unheard of, for a NA player who's already with an NHL organization. He sure seems like he's too good for the Dub but would absolutely lighting up a junior league be worse for his development than potentially getting buried in the lineup of an NHL team for a year? Having said that though, if he's clearly better than Mahura and Benoit in camp than he should at least get a look. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see this kid get 9 games before heading back to the Dub and then having a Bobby Orr-like season on the stat sheet.

I think they signed Vatrano to play him with Z
As good as McTavish looks he's going to start on the LW, we do that with all of our C prospects (Zegras, Lundestrom, Steel as recent examples)
Not too far off from the lines I hope/expect to see though
Vatrano-Zegras-Terry
Comtois-Henrique-Strome
McTavish-Lundestrom-Silf
Jones-Grant-Carrick</div></div>
Rico at center over Strome? I feel like we got Strome to play up the middle and Rico has proven to be as reliable, if not more, as a winger. We'll see I guess since Strome seems to really suck at faceoffs. I'd be surprised to not see Mac on that top line, at least to start. There's so much potential for that line to be dynamic with those three though I see the value of both spreading out the talent and easing the kid in a bit. But man, those three could really do something together.

Scratching Grant in favor of a minor leaguer with all of 9 NHL games under his belt? Grant got 15 goals last year and averages that amount per 82 games as a Duck. No way he's penciled in as a scratch. And Mac has to ease his way into the center position much like Z had to. Plus, we could probably plug him in as our top LW from day one.

This isn't enough to get to cap floor. As crazy as it sounds, the Ducks will have to spend big in free agency, literally have to. Pat was willing to spend over 6 mil for Hampus, I'm sure he'll go after a d-man with a similar offer. He can easily stick to the rebuild and try to put together a competitive team if he targets free agents and I think he will.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TZ11</b></div><div>As I said, my guess is that Henrique will be playing Wing. Groulx isn't better than him, but I never said that anyways. They wouldn't play the same position and Rico wouldn't be bumped by Groulx.
All analytics say Grant is terrible, but I mainly don't think he's good by watching. He is a solid extra forward, but he shouldn't be the Center on the line Eakins plays against the top lines of other teams. I think Groulx could be better than him if he's used correctly, but maybe not quite yet. I think Groulx will be ahead of Grant in 22/23.
I think Steel has to perform this season or he's done in Anaheim. I think that if he continues to struggle, he could be dealt at the TDL.
I hope for the Centers to be Zegras-Getzlaf-Lundeström-Groulx, but I think Grant will start as the 4th line Center.</div></div>
Bravo, my friend. Totally have to eat crow on this. Really impressed with Bo and hope he makes the best of this opportunity. Very, very disappointed in Steel. Should have traded him a while ago.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TZ11</b></div><div>My assumption is that Henrique will play Wing. Grant shouldn't be a full-time NHLer, but he'll probably play because Eakins likes him. Steel hasn't been good at all since Eakins has been there and therefore I could see Groulx taking his spot if he has a really good camp. And if Eakins realizes Groulx is better than Grant, BO might get the chance to play. It seems unrealistic, but I'm definitely rooting for him.</div></div>
I'm totally rooting for him too but at this stage he's simply not better than Henrique, Grant or ever Steel. He should be, eventually, but those guys are all established pros whom will be wasted in the press box. It's funny how much negativity Grant inspires. There must be some analytical stat that suggests he's terrible because he's really not. He has been a solid fourth-line center ever stint he's been with us. Steel frustrates the hell out of me and I'm actually annoyed Murph hasn't traded him to maximize his value as he's cruising towards bustville. But he has talent and produces, a bit. He really needs to step up and early. Rico is totally solid and sure as hell isn't going to get bumped by a rookie. He had a bizarre stretch there last year that led to him getting waived but he was his old self after that. I expect another 20-ish-goal, 40-point season from his this year.

BO will have to have a hell of a camp to make this team right out of the gate. Not saying it won't happen but it seems really unlikely considering we have like six centers among the top 14 forwards as it is. I fully anticipate seeing him get called up at some point but there's too much of a logjam down the middle if everyone's healthy.

I really don't mean to beat a dead horse but I get the impression you didn't watch a lot of Karlsson's game when he was a Duck. He blossomed into a completely different player once he went to the Knights. It's funny, he even had a game or two where he flashed that potential much like Steel has, which got us all hyped about these guys. And they're built exactly the same. I've stood next to Wild Bill, don't let that 6' measurement fool you. He is faster than Steel though, I'll give you that.

1. Guhle, Benoit, or Mahura. We don't need all three of them in our system, especially with some of the rooks we have coming up.
2. That's exactly what we all said about Karlsson when he got traded to Columbus. The similarities they share at this stage in their careers is worrisome since I actively want him to be moved to maximize his value. Columbus felt that way about him too since they left him exposed in the expansion draft. That's not to say Steel will end up like Karlsson but he definitely could. I'm just more afraid he'll end up like Peter Holland but chances are in lands somewhere in the middle.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Salzy</b></div><div>Gonna have to agree to disagree here, I don’t think it’s realistic or rational for the Ducks to even consider it. I’d rather have a 4th round lottery ticket than Scandella keeping Mahura/Guhle/Thurn/Lacombe blocked for 3!!!!! Seasons. Even if Steel never becomes more than a 3C the Ducks lose this trade now and in the future.
Even if Steel doesn’t take that step Scandella is one of the last players that should be on ANAs radar. Makes no sense to me even in the slightest</div></div>
Who says Scandella will block any of those players? This could very well be the last season of Lindholm and Manson and it's not like we're high on the list for veteran d-men to sign here in case they walk or get traded. And who's to say Shattenkirk is here beyond next season? The way I look at it, we need a legit LHD and we don't have a guy in our system I feel comfortable with taking that role. I've seen enough out of Larsson, Guhle and Mahura. Scandella is better than all three of them and doesn't make a ton of money. If he had one less year on his deal I would be banging on Murph's door to make this happen right now. I'm excited about the prospect of Thrun and Lacombe but they aren't even signed and will undoubtable require at least one full year in San Diego, if not more, so there's really no threat to blocking them with this move. No more than holding onto Larsson would.
Let me ask you this: do you think the Ducks would be better in 21-22 with Larsson or Scandella? Also, do you want them to be better? I want them to win but also to keep an eye on the future. Murph could make a ton of moves right now to ship out a bunch of young guys to load up on vets to try to make an on-paper playoff team or he can stand pat and have re-signing Getzy be his only move with on eye on absolutely sucking again. I don't him to do either (which isn't to say Scandella would be the difference between absolutely sucking and being competitive, but it would definitely moves things towards the latter).
Larsson and Steel were first round picks and they have absolutely stagnated. Steel and Lundestrom are redundant and we simply need a better option at LHD3. I think it's critical that Murph recoup some value for those two first rounders and made some attempt at shoring up our D. I think this deal can achieve that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>1- At the very least, Larsson should be considered 1.2M they'd have to pay and/or account for on the cap. As such, I noted that adding Larsson subtracts from the offer, which is obviously true. He's wretched and all the Ducks fans here are saying he's pure trash. Larsson would be of no good use whatsoever, and would have been of no good use last season.
2- Steel is nearly 24 now, he is no longer a prospect. He's just a average-to-subpar 3C who is small and bordering on slow. And has one ELC year left, not a great boon or anything.
3- Scandella has strength, skates well and stands up the line. He moves the puck reasonably safely and understands the system already. Cap hit or not, he's obviously useful and it's not hard to see.
4- The cap flexibility is a good thing, but would have been far more useful a few weeks ago. It does absolutely nothing to help us actually win games now (or, quite possibly, in the future). This is not how the team operates. If there was another squad strengthening move to run behind it, sure. As is, I'd definitely find a better solution. This is not the only way to gain some cap flexibility.</div></div>
Would throwing in a pick or even another depth d-man sweeten the pot? I feel like there's a deal to be made here. Also, I feel like your underestimating Steel a bit. I think, as Ducks fans, our expectations went a little crazy after his post-draft year in the Dub when he put up insane numbers so seeing his progression being where it is has felt underwhelming. But he's a good player and I think he might even flourish in another system. I fear he realizes his true potential with another team a la William Karlsson but I'm willing to risk that to maximize his value now instead of watching him run into the ground the someone like Peter Holland did (a player, thankfully, Bob Murray knew to get good value back before it was too late).

I waffled a bit on adding to it. But with Scandella's age and term plus how young Steel and Larsson are, not to mention being former first rounders, this seemed pretty fair to me. In fact, I'm waiting for my fellow Ducks fans to chime in about it being too much.

Gibby is our guy and if he's healthy he'll play 50-60 games. You're going to pay a backup 7 mil to play like 20-30 games? Especially one as old as Rask? Like, I get that was his salary last season but he is not worth that much. That's starter money and if he could get it, he would have by now.

My unpopular Anaheim opinion
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>" I understand there's value in keeping guys like Lindholm but teams that full on tear down rather than do a half ass rebuild always come out better."
Ask Buffalo about that...From 2013-2018, the Sabres drafted Dahlin, Mittlestadt, Nylander, Eichel, Reinhart, Ristolainen, all within the first 8 picks of the draft. Add to that Cozens, Quinn and Power. You can throw the Coyotes into a similar boat, but they've also managed to f*ck themselves a bunch of other times. The Devils have been rebuilding since 2012, with 1 playoff appearance, and a whole lot of early 1st round picks to show for it (They'll be better this year though!).
Are there teams that come out better? Absolutely. But people seem to forget that there's very little guarantee that ripping everything apart will somehow magically guarantee that you're back to being a contender in a few years.
I don't think your opinion is at all unpopular...Should they have made a bigger push to move Manson/Rakell? Yeah, of course...but if the return wasn't there, there's not a ton of point in just moving them to move them, right? Honestly, someone at the deadline probably gives up a Foligno haul for Rakell if he's anywhere close to be decent. Put him with Zegras and Comtois and rak (see what I did there?) him up some points. Manson? I have a hard time believing that Winnipeg had their 1st on the table. Looking at the Risto return in Buffalo-If there was anything close to that, then it was a huge bogey, but yeah, I don't see it. Maybe something this deadline, maybe not. If it's not there though, don't force it! Manson will eat the tough minutes that ease Drysdale into the lineup, since Anaheim kind of put themselves into a situation where they either have to play him or send him back to the OHL (Which wouldn't make a ton of sense).
I don't know...if the deals were there then the team absolutely should have thought long and hard about them, I just don't really think they were anywhere close. With Eakins' $hit system sucking the life out of the offence, and making the team look like they're playing zone D in their own end, everybody's trade value was blown apart after last year.</div></div>
I'd go a bit further, totally tear downs never work. Ever. You laid out excellent examples as to why it's so perilous to go that route. So many people just look at a bad team that has been struggling for several seasons and automatically go, "Oof, they suck. Blow up the team!" As if that that's a tried-and-true method for success when it's demonstrably not.
Yes, this team sucks. Yes, we're probably going to suck again (though more moves are coming, there's no way we're keeping all three of Steel, Lundestrom and Larsson. Maybe throw Guhle in there too) but we still need to ice a team that LOOKS like they're trying to get better. And we really should be this bad. We have a decent amount of talent and AT SOME POINT these young players, not named Comtois, SHOULD finally ascend into the players we drafted them to be. I feel like I've said this each summer for the last four years, but if we can stay healthy and turn Steel, Larsson and a pick into a quality d-man, this team should be competitive.
At the very least, we're no in rush to ship off guys like Lindholm, Manson and Rakell just for futures. Because we're either going to actually be pretty good this year and we'll need them or we'll suck again, which is what we'll do if we trade them away now so why not hold onto them until at least the deadline? If this team was going to get blown up it would have happened two weeks ago. There's still a tweak or two to go (or at least there better be Murph. we have way too many first rounders populating our bottom-6, trade some of them and get some effing value for them!) but this is our squad.

Um, Ducks say no. We traded away Kase for a reason and we have plenty of late-first round type forwards. Also, Lindholm is not going to be a cap dump, not in the summer at least. We should be signing him to a contract extension, not trading him. Now once the deadline rolls around and it's clear Hampus is going to look elsewhere, that's one thing. As I recall, when I saw it, the return was some player we don't need and a third-round pick or something like that which I dismissed out of hand without even registering it. It wouldn't have occurred to me to turn down the St. Louis first which, as you note, is either the 16th or 17th selection depending upon whether Montreal or Winnipeg wins that series. (Notice from my comment and also Comment #1 that the Vancouver trade was changed, too.)</div></div>
28 year-old centers who can produce close to .75 PPG don't become available often. Sure the cap not going up is problematic for all teams but I would be shocked if he didn't find a taker that gives him at least a million dollar raise. 7.5 wouldn't be outrageous at all.
