Our colleague <a href="/users/TheJoeMan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@TheJoeMan</a>. I'm not convinced that it's such a bad idea. If you accept the premise that Steel isn't progressing, and he might not exceed 25 points this season, then this is a good thought: we get an experienced defenseman to play the third pair who is signed cheaply for term and who is both an upgrade on Larsson and could step up in the case of injury (horrors!) to Cam Fowler or Hampus Lindholm.

You guys might not like the idea, and you might not agree with Joe's evaluation of Scandella's on-ice merits, but you cannot deny that it has both a realistic and a rational basis.

It's extremely funny to me that you say Larsson is wretched and Scandella is useful when <a href="https://imgur.com/a/ARVGnQw" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">their profiles are extremely similar</a>. Is it ideal to take Larsson back? It's not, but we would be shedding ten million in salary by getting rid of the rest of the Scandella deal, so taking Larsson back for a year and paying him 1.3M is, in the grand scheme of things, not a big deal for a team that's publicly committed to spending to the cap. And then you can just not qualify him next year.

I mean I said in my original comment it only makes sense if the Blues can use the cap space to find a different LHD. I'm not under any illusions that Steel is going to be a top six player on the Blues but he still has upside and he's cheap and I don't know how you can claim Scandella, a below average player making 3.25, is useful and then claim an NHL bottom six player making basically league minimum is not. Like, what do you think Marco Scandella is worth? Because it's not much more than that. I don't see a whole lot of mock rosters of people actively wanting Scandella.

He's useful in-so-far that he's an NHL body with experience in the Blues system, I guess. I feel like the bare minimum of an NHL defenseman is "skates, is strong, and stands up the line". Distinguishing that as some kind of pro is I guess technically true but like it's hardly worth mentioning. Scandella's skill is his puck movement and ability to break out rush chances, but he does this at the expense of solid work in his own end and depending on your mileage on Faulk three other defensemen on this team already fit that description and do it better than him. Perunovich could make a fourth.

Obviously I'm not arguing against the Blues seeking out a better deal but like I just feel like expecting there to be a line around the block willing to pony up for Marco Scandella and the ten million dollars he's still owed with the limited skillset he offers is wishful thinking.

Ask Buffalo about that...From 2013-2018, the Sabres drafted Dahlin, Mittlestadt, Nylander, Eichel, Reinhart, Ristolainen, all within the first 8 picks of the draft. Add to that Cozens, Quinn and Power. You can throw the Coyotes into a similar boat, but they've also managed to f*ck themselves a bunch of other times. The Devils have been rebuilding since 2012, with 1 playoff appearance, and a whole lot of early 1st round picks to show for it (They'll be better this year though!).

Are there teams that come out better? Absolutely. But people seem to forget that there's very little guarantee that ripping everything apart will somehow magically guarantee that you're back to being a contender in a few years.

I don't think your opinion is at all unpopular...Should they have made a bigger push to move Manson/Rakell? Yeah, of course...but if the return wasn't there, there's not a ton of point in just moving them to move them, right? Honestly, someone at the deadline probably gives up a Foligno haul for Rakell if he's anywhere close to be decent. Put him with Zegras and Comtois and rak (see what I did there?) him up some points. Manson? I have a hard time believing that Winnipeg had their 1st on the table. Looking at the Risto return in Buffalo-If there was anything close to that, then it was a huge bogey, but yeah, I don't see it. Maybe something this deadline, maybe not. If it's not there though, don't force it! Manson will eat the tough minutes that ease Drysdale into the lineup, since Anaheim kind of put themselves into a situation where they either have to play him or send him back to the OHL (Which wouldn't make a ton of sense).

I don't know...if the deals were there then the team absolutely should have thought long and hard about them, I just don't really think they were anywhere close. With Eakins' $hit system sucking the life out of the offence, and making the team look like they're playing zone D in their own end, everybody's trade value was blown apart after last year.

I don't think that Nugent-Hopkins is going to get much over $6 million in this economic environment. We'll see!

The OP has changed the Rakell trade in this post quite drastically. As I recall, when I saw it, the return was some player we don't need and a third-round pick or something like that which I dismissed out of hand without even registering it. It wouldn't have occurred to me to turn down the St. Louis first which, as you note, is either the 16th or 17th selection depending upon whether Montreal or Winnipeg wins that series. (Notice from my comment and also Comment #1 that the Vancouver trade was changed, too.)

Neither Drysdale or Zegras are ready. If Comtois was he’d be on the main roster. Hardly the GMs fault when LW2 was Comtois’ to lose and he lost it.

Hutton was a PTO and didn’t make the team, I’d much rather have the assortment of guys we have than him anyways

We can have all the interest in PLD in the world, doesn’t mean CBJ moves him.

We’re rebuilding. If we rush our top prospects because we’re excited we get a Casey middlestat scenario taking the slow approach is 110% the right call, the worst thing that happens is they blow through the AHL and come up a bit later, I would always rather that then rush them up and ruin their confidence and development.

Patience is key, we aren’t competing with Zegras, Drysdale, etc so why rush them before they are ready. Neither of them have played against men consistently before.

The team doesn’t go away if we don’t win this year and honestly we won’t with any combination of players we have available right now. They aren’t good enough and they aren’t ready

I am with you %100. I just saw what an impact that line had against Chicago on Sunday night and I would love to see if for a full game and go from there. I'm indifferent with Shore. I thought he played well in the first 2 games but after that its been kind of shakey. Fair enough, I love Comtois but didn't think he would be utilized great on the 4th line. I would love to see this team to start burying some of their chances though.

You make a good point on bringing Lundestrom up. Terry reminds me of Getzlaf and not wanting to shoot. I still don't think I would sit Terry though. Maybe sit Jones instead of Terry and bring Comtois back in the lineup.
