Toronto Maple Leafs signed Mitchell Marner (6 Years / $10,903,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I disagree. Players value on their contract should not depend on the cap available on their team., it's league comparables. You are correct that the Leafs are about 2.8m over cap with 23 man roster. So what? That may/may not be the Leafs fault but you couldn't expect the Marner to fall on the sword for 2.8m, if he didn't have too. The Leafs option was a shorter team to be under the cap currently. Other teams have their own cap issue coming when their RFAs are signed. We'll see how they deal with their situation. Sure doesn't look like the Leafs are unique in their cap dilemma.
Dubas has already said they are going with reduced roster...that saves 800,00 or 1.6m.
Unfortunately IMO we are reaching a stage where top players are taking a bigger piece of the pie and the lesser players are getting less and/or left to play in the AHL. The NHLPA and the majority of it's members are mid to lower priced players. It's their issue. Owners are going to spend to the cap, it just a question of how the pie is divided.</div></div>
Yeah, because there's such a big difference between $8 million and $11 million, not. Unless you're Jack Johnson, you're set for life regardless.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mondo</b></div><div>yeah, they have a bunch of players with expiring contracts next season. every team does.
do you think they're re-signing every ufa?</div></div>
Not necessarily, but they'll have to sign some players at least. Not to mention they'll need to leave space for future RFA's like Kapanen and Moore. Yes, they are a few years down the road, but if you don't leave enough cap space for them, and they end up earning a big raise, then here we go again.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Mitchell Marner (6 Years / $10,903,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mondo</b></div><div>okay, since you don't know basic math:
projected cap hit for maple leafs 2020-21: $66,326,866
projected cap hit: $81,500,000
projected cap space: $15,173,134</div></div>
Their cap hit is projected to be lower, because a bunch of their players will be free agents, meaning they need to re-sign them, or find replacements.

The salary cap is not increasing by $18 million lol. Besides, they need to get under the cap if they don't want to potentially "face fines of up to US$5 million, cancellation of contracts, loss of draft picks, loss of points and/or forfeiture of game(s)".

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I've said Nylander, Matthews and now Marner are overpaid. But is the new NHL and pay structure for RFAs? I know Leaf haters think this so bad for the Leafs, but now we have another "bar" for RFAs. Let's see what some of the other sign for before we say the Marner is that good or bad.
It's bargain compared to some of the recent UFA signings with long term. Karlsson at 11.5, Hayes at 7.1m. Kopitar at 11m. Is 27 year old Sequin at 9.8m X 8 or Stone at 9.5m X 8a better bargain than 22 year old Marner?</div></div>
It's not even all about Marner himself. It's about the Leafs cap space, or lack thereof. If this was the Leafs one big money player, then people probably wouldn't make as big of a deal about it. But now the Leafs have 3 players averaging about $11 Million, which is ridiculous. Even after taking Horton and Clarkson off the books for LTIR, the Leafs would still be $2.8 Million over the cap...

Winnipeg Jets signed Joshua Morrissey (8 Years / $6,250,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arafay</b></div><div>You know scheifele was also part of that problem. So was Connor and every tother jet on the ice at that moment. The fact is that both JoMo and Trouba are premier defencemen in their own end in this league. JoMo is only slightly better as he is more mobile and moves the puck better. The bread and butter of trouba's Game is his defensive play. Offence is just complimentary to it. If you think Trouba is bad in his own end your simply wrong and I can’t argue against that. (Mind you Trouba had better advanced stats than JoMo while they play together almost all the time)
However I think that Trouba has reached his peak and JoMo could be a perennial 60 pt guy if he can prove to be a 1 pp qb</div></div>
As a Jets fan, I can tell you, Trouba is a horrible defender.

We all saw this coming. The Leafs are so screwed lol. The key to success is to have 20 good players, not 2 great players and 18 bums. Also, even after Horton and Clarkson go on LTIR, the Leafs will still be $2.8 Million over the cap. LOL. Paying Kessel $1.2 Million per year in retained salary not helping either lol (I know that was before Dubas was the GM, but still).

It's only 1 year, but it could be a steal for that year. He needs to clean up a bit, but he could be a 15-20 goal scorer, if he stays out of trouble, and stays disciplined.

No **** he was better than Trouba. Morrissey is a real defenceman, not a forward. Everybody likes to judge defenders by points. That's not their job, defending is their job.

Nashville Predators signed Matt Duchene (7 Years / $8,000,000 AAV)
I like to operate at 10 points per $1,000,000 for forwards. 70 points would be $7,000,000. His career average is around 61.69739 points, which would be $6,169,739. So this contract isn't too bad. No where near as bad as Panarin or Bobrovsky.
