Pens Canucks
**2025 2nd becomes a 1st if Guentzel re-signs and Vancouver makes the playoffs in 2025 OR Vancouver wins the cup in 2024 and Guentzel plays in 50% of those playoff games (top 10 protected)**
Guentzel is out for about a month and Mikeyev seems to be in the Canucks' dog house. Vancouver improves their playoff run and dumps a contract they do not want anymore while the Pens get 1 or 2 bodies to try and make a longshot run including a former 10th overall pick and a high draft pick.

For this one I assumed that none of these selections had any traded 'draft considerations' and could be what they would do assuming no one wanted to make any deals.

Seattle Kraken - take 2
Changed it up a bit, I decided to focus on who Seattle would draft to save as much money as possible while still building a fantastic team. I did avoid players that, in my opinion, would need a trade for draft considerations to take. For example Ryan Johansen. As much as I think he is a much better player that cap space can be used elsewhere but if Nashville wants to give us their 1st round pick to take him then obviously we reconsider.
Just under $60M after Driedger is signed.

Seattle Kraken (no trades, 1st draft)
For this one I went with all of the big name forwards who are signed.
Voracek > Gostisbehere
Tarasenko > Dunn
No UFA but I did make an exemption with Driedger as it was reported they are working on a deal.
Obviously this excludes trades before the draft and there would obviously be plenty of deals after.
Went with 4 goalies as Kahkonen & Daccord can be sent to the minors without waivers.

2021 5th becomes a 3rd if Colorado makes it to the conference final, becomes a 2nd if Kreider re-signs, and becomes a 1st if Colorado wins the cup and Kreider plays 50% of those games that year OR Georgiev wins 9 or more of those playoff games.

Trade with ANH
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BC98 </b></div><div>A 2nd round pick has a 5% chance of playing an NHL game. Almost the same % chance as a 3rd or 4th.
The post is more about the player Gudbranson with the Leafs and not what goes back and fourth in the trade. Make it an 18th round pick in 2049 for all i care. The post/question is would the leafs be interested in him</div></div>
uh a 2nd rounder has a much higher chance of playing at least 50 NHL games (44%, see link: <a href="https://www.tsn.ca/playing-the-percentages-in-the-nhl-draft-1.206144" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.tsn.ca/playing-the-percentages-in-the-nhl-draft-1.206144</a>) but regarding Gudbranson I would be interested in a Ceci deal only if Anaheim ate half of his contract. The return matters to me (I wouldn't pay a 2nd without adding like a half dozen conditions lol) but yes in a perfect storm kind of move I wouldn't mind him in the #6 slot.

Trade with ANH
This feels like another year of a Ceci level (albeit a completely different style and game) of defender for similar money but for another year AND we have to dump a 2nd to do it.
honestly even if they ate half of his contract & took Ceci on I wouldn't pay a 2nd. This would likely end the deal there and then for Anaheim but I can live with that.

Your bigger problem is that everyone with salary except for Point has a NTC and is not waiving for NJ. The only chance this has to fit is to send Paquette back and for Hall's salary to be 50% retained which means a big piece is being added to this deal.

TML Roster After Trade Rumours
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TanSor</b></div><div>I mean he's not even a year older than Tavares... Sign him to a 5 year deal (which would be doable IMO) and his deal would end exactly when Tavares' does. I think $7-8M is around what it would cost, and considering the Marleau deal is up after next year and the cap will go up, Leafs will have plenty of space to make it happen especially if they move a Brown or Zaitsev.
I mean where else are you going to get your elite top pairing RD? Teams aren't exactly trying to get rid of guys like that. Hell, even Fenton has said signing Spurgeon is a priority so MN isn't exactly shopping him (although I do think he could be moved for the right price considering Toronto has the pieces we need). Plus, Toronto might be able to get Spurgeon on more of a discount if they do a sign and trade than if they go after him in free agency. More demand in free agency would raise Spurgeon price.</div></div>
I don't know why I always think he is 32 lol.
Still my other points stand. Signed to $8M until 35 isn't ideal and once again why does Toronto help Minnesota by multiplying Spurgeon's value from a rental to someone who would fetch a young elite forward?
Spurgeon included in this example just doesn't fit since he is a pending UFA. But considering his age a 4-5 year deal for Spurgeon does make him very valuable.

TML Roster After Trade Rumours
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TanSor</b></div><div>Well like I said they could sign him to an extension easily I'd imagine. He has said he wants to win and he'd have a great shot at that in Toronto. He's also the best defenseman on the Wild in terms of defensive play, he played amazingly in a shut down role with Brodin for the first half of the season.</div></div>
Considering the trade would come after the signing bonus is paid and an extension can be discussed that isn't bad but considering Spurgeon's age his next contract is going to be long and for a high cap hit. The Leafs would need another huge piece or two back which may make this too expensive a price for Minnesota. Besides, helping Minnesota trade Spurgeon as an elite defender with term isn't really smart asset management for the Leafs.

Dubas can just tell him, you'll either be on the 4th line or a healthy scratch with the Leafs or you can do down to the Marlies, get to stay live and play in Toronto and maybe we'll recall you just in time for the playoffs. I know the cap hit stays but at least it's an option.</div></div>
I thought the point of a trade is to delete the cap hit? Marleau playing @ 6.25M is infinitely better than Marleau not playing but STILL @ 6.25M.

Marleau as a Marlie
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>draft_em_sign_em_trade_em</b></div><div>Well the threat of life as a Marlie (or healthy scratch) might force Marleau to agree to a trade, which would create 5 million more to spend (hello Top 4 Dmen). The Leafs have a lot of above average D prospects (Rosen, Bergman, Sandin, Lilly, Rasanen, Hollowell, Gordeev and Kral) to add to the cash dump of Marleau's contract.</div></div>
The Leafs cannot assign him to the Marlies without Marleau's permission. The only threat they have is to healthy scratch him which would be a horrible morale move for pretty much every young player who looks up to Marleau. Not really a smart move.
The only hope the Leafs have of ridding themselves of that contract is if Marleau decides to retire at which point the Leafs can move him to a cap floor team, Marleau retires, then signs a 1 day contract in San Jose to retire a shark.
The other but possibly illegal way is to move his contract after July 1st (after his $3M bonus is paid) to a team looking to hit the cap floor and add another asset, buy out Marleau (to do this they must have a player scheduled for salary arbitration which gives the team a 2nd buyout window) then the Leafs can re-sign Marleau to a 1 year $1-2M similar to the way Orpik was done. Problem here is the league may be able to prove better a case for cap circumvention.

Tight fit
The first deal doesn't really make sense for Carolina. Even if Toronto offered Zaitsev AND Brown for Pesce I do not see why Carolina takes on a replacement D. Although maybe a downgrade in one position to add a young strength in another may be more tempting than prospects and picks.
The 2nd one requires Edmonton to find a way to free up cap to even think about. They likely would have to ask Toronto to take on Manning or drop the picks and offer Benning again.
Interesting ideas though.

Lucic to Van
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shibbal18</b></div><div>See thats what i thought because he waives his nmc to move, but i was told i was wrong</div></div>
He would get all the facts before the deal was finalized. If he agreed to move to Vancouver and then Vancouver refused to sign the addendum then Lucic can choose to reject (there is no place where he gets screwed).
The clause can travel with the player even if he consents to being traded or is claimed on waivers
- This requires that the acquiring team sign an addendum to the contract ensuring that the clause does in fact travel with the player<strong> (written by the player's agent)</strong>
- If the acquiring team refuses to sign the addendum, and the player waives his clause anyway, at that point the clause may be nullified
The player will know if the team is refusing to sign this before the trade is finalized. I could be wrong but if that was not the case then this rule is a waste of time because NO ONE would ever do it and all clauses would get auto-voided.

You should bold the part RIGHT BEFORE where you did:
<strong>and the player waives his clause anyway</strong>
Lucic WILL NOT allow his only trade and waiver protection to dissolve. I mean I could be wrong but I cannot remember one single situation where this has happened.

That rule only works if a player is traded BEFORE the clause kicks in (this happens with young players signing long term deals). If your NMC kicks in next year and you are traded now then the new team can choose to void the clauses in FUTURE years.
In the case of Lucic his clause will stay. He would have to agree to waive for Seattle.

So with this I tried not to protect any player that was a UFA between 2019-2021 (unless it was obviously like Ovechkin, etc) but also tried not to draft any of those players as they would either be re-signed and protected or signed by another team and protected (you will see no pending UFA above). There are some odd picks such as Quick and Ryan but in absence of a great player/prospect I had Seattle take a gamble route (who knows if Quick will even be decent by 2021 but they do need an NHL goalie tandem so I went with it).

Deadline deal that just makes too much sense
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div><div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Steven_Dean</b></div><div>
Adding Edler will not happen without adding significantly more. Though I do agree the both Sedins will have to be 50% retained to make it fit.
The original trade could happen but many more picks have to be included. Montreal also might not have to include Plekanec's contract if they do not add much salary as they would have over $30M in deadline cap space as of today. I'm thinking the only way Vancouver does this is for something like:
H. Sedin ($3.5M)
D. Sedin ($3.5M)
Gudbranson
For:
Scherbak
Juulsen
Fucale
2018 1st
2018 2nd
Conditional 2019 pick (1st if Montreal makes the Stanley Cup finals or resigns any one player, 2nd round pick otherwise)
It is a lot to pay but each Sedin on their own is worth one high priced rental (considering lesser rentals go for a 1st and prospect have each Sedin go for a blue chip prospect, 1st, and other piece is fair especially at 50%). With both and Gudbranson added the cost will be completely nuts.</div></div>
MTL can't add 10M of salary juts like that. Plekanec is only there to offset some salary so they can make it fit. Secondly Gudbranson is a RHD, which the habs enough of and need LHD more. that is where Edler would make more sense. Anyways, Vancouver can only retain on one more contract I believe so i don't think it would work.</div></div>
This was presented as a deadline deal. Montreal may only have $8M in cap space but at the deadline they can add over $30M if they don't add any today. It can fit but if this changes and Plecanec has to go back then that's fine but he won't add value to the deal for Vancouver.
