What do you value Kovacevic at individually and Savard at individually? I think MTL would trade one or the other.

actual expectations
These all seem right to me. Probably what Evans would get but Habs might as well hold on to him for that price. Maybe with retention Savard could get a 1st instead of two 2nds.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>I'd maybe consider taking Tanner Pearson for no return if Montreal retains 50%. Maybe a conditional 5th or something if Pearson plays in 10+ games or so down the stretch.</div></div>
The one issue with that is MTL only has one retention slot left, and there is probably a way to get more value out of that than a 5th round pick, otherwise I'd say deal. I also wouldn't recommend, Pearson isn't the player he was. He's one of MTL's worst this year so that says a lot.

Yeah honestly I'm not sure what Evans value would be but I'd like to see a bit more for it.
Hughes sort of fleeced Calgary in hindsight but taking Monahan's $6M cap hit was worth a 1st round pick, I think he'd push for at least a 2nd to take Johansen. So there'd have to be a little something in there for Evans I think, habs like him for what he is so I don't think they just throw him into a deal.
MTL could roll with Suzuki - Dach - Johansen - Dvorak next year, so it could definitely work as long as the value is there, I think it's just missing a little bit more.

I think Johansen would likely cost a 2nd round pick just for MTL to take him, I feel there is no value here for Evans, so MTL declines. A deal could definitely work between the 2 teams though.

Playoffs in 2025
I don't get all these Andersson trades for MTL...
Rasmus Andersson (2nd round, 53rd overall, 2015)
At age 22: 2G - 17A - 19P - 90GP - (+15)
Justin Barron (1st Round, 25th overall, 2020)
11G - 18A - 29P - 87GP - (-9)
Why would you add a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Farrell and spend an extra $3M for a guy that is a UFA in 2 years, when if you are patient Barron could be a top 4 D. The organization has Reinbacher and Mailloux too. One of these 3 players will likely become an Andersson or greater.

Yes, most skill players peak in their rfa years.
The rest including rantanen comp.... ho boy</div></div>
This reeks of preconceptions. Rantanen had 38 pts in 75 games as a 19 year old in the NHL. Slafkovsky currently has 30 pts in 58 games, a pace of 39 pts in 75 games. I know, suggesting Rantanen would be a star player at that age was probably hard to believe too, but he did it the very next season.
In 2022 Peter Forsberg compared Slafkovsky to Rantanen and aspects of his game have also been compared to Jagr. But hey, what does hall of famer Peter Forsberg know I guess.

Why Stamkos is a realistic option for the free agency
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>littlejerryseinfeld</b></div><div>But you don't have a good young core of forwards and you don't have very many forward prospects.
You have some decent middle 6 players, some of whom you've paid like 1st liners
Stamkos would have no interest in montreal</div></div>
Since they've been put on a line together Dec. 7:
- Slafkovsky (Age 19): 23 pts in 32GP (59 pts pace)
- Caufield (Age 22): 26 pts in 32GP (67 pts pace)
- Suzuki (Age 24): 34 pts in 32 GP (87 pts pace)
Slafkovsky is following a similar trajectory as Rantanen who put up 80 pts at age 20.
Add in Kirby Dach who looked primed for a breakout at age 22 after scoring at a pace of 54 pts at age 21.
Add in a top 5 pick from this draft.
I dont think Stamkos would sign with MTL, taxes and media are a lot different than what he's used to in TB. But if you add one big forward to this group through trade or free agency it's solid.
Unless you think 19 and 22 year olds have peaked...

Seravalli and Friedman have a horrendus track record with the Ducks, they have no reliable source on that team, they are constantly wrong every time they talk about them</div></div>

The quote you just used also says the Ducks are listening lol. You're only reading what you want to see. A GM is never gonna say "yes it is our goal to trade our 22 year old former top 10 pick". MTL said they weren't trading Subban either, until they did.
Here's a simple observation, Anaheim is among league leaders in cap space, yet they entered the season with a contract dispute over Zegras and didn't sign him to a long term deal (which would have had beneficial cap savings down the road when the team is actually competitive). They are obviously not married to Trevor Zegras.

MTL wouldn’t trade Slaf for basically anything, same thing with LA for Byfield</div></div>
I would trade Slaf for that package:
- Barron: Potential top 4 D.
- Hutson: Potential top pair D.
- 2024 1st: Likely top 5 draft pick, (Cayden Lindstrom?)
- 2026 1st: No protection indicated, is MTL even guaranteed to be a playoff team in 2 years?
You're likely looking at least 4 NHL'rs, 2 with high end potential, plus millions in short term cap savings if you were to trade Byfield who needs a new contract. Not saying LA would do that, but the value is definitely there.

Habs should considering buyout Gally and Dvorack
For what reason? They don't need cap space so buyouts make no sense it just prolongs the issue.
Dvorak's issue is he can't stay healthy. Best case scenario he bounces back and habs retain 50% and trade him next year, worst case scenerio he ends up on LTIR again. Buying him out would be nonsense.
Gallagher can just be the 13th or 14th forward. No need to buy him out either.
Do not suggest a buyout ever unless you have plans to use that cap space which makes a buyout necessary. You have a 20 man roster with $28M in cap space

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>Maybe Im confused, but with the ton of impact prospects that MTL has, half are a yr or two away, maybe I dont think MTL's window is 23-24 or 24-25, so why do some MTL fans not want picks (assets) and just want players for now? Wouldn;t you rather have the assets (picks) for addressing weaknesses at the end of 24-25 or 25-26 than a quick fix that might fit the bill this yr and next?
Farrell, Reinbach, Maillot, Mesar, Heineman, Mysak, Barron, Tuch, Kidney, Hutson (great prospect pool) are all just arrived in minors or are not there yet? And the established youngsters in the NHL are hardly aging in Suzuki, Beck, Caulfield, Slaf, Guhle, Struble and X.
Im just unsure why some MTL fans are looking for what they call "aging players" or when theyre talking about their window, what is that window?
I gues IMO, their window hasn;t really opened yet, they're still riding out the bad deals/contracts/situations of Anderson, Dvorak, Price, Armia, Pearson, Gallagher and having the youth arrive in a steady stream. Why trade 2 young dmen and 2 picks for an aging Andersson?
And while I agree that Barron and Harris are probably the odd men out as the higher end youngsters arrive, how they can be so good and expendable at the same time?</div></div>
This is bang on.
The Andersson trade presented here makes absolutely no sense. The rebuild is not over, but it may be ending. That doesn't mean you trade a 22 year old D prospect and two 1sts to acquire a 27 year old D that will be a UFA in 2 years. I could see a trade to acquire a young asset that will help MTL short and long term - such as the Dach and Newhook acquisitions.

Caufield points per game: 0.725
Zegras points per game: 0.730
Caufield has stepped it up defensively this year while Zegras is dealing with injuries but otherwise they are comparable.
I think we need to temper expectations on Beck offensively, he has never been that guy more of a 2-way C. Probably 3rd Line. For reference Beck is scoring at approximately the exact same rate as Jared Davidson did in junior, Davidson has 12 pts in 29 games for Laval this season. Definitely not blue chip, the best part of Beck's game has been defensive reputation, which would make for a good 3C.

Zegras and Toffoli
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div>Are we watching the same games? He looked great against WSH and ANA. Against STL he was one of the only decent players that night, and everyone looked horrible defensively vs the Rangers...
Defensively, I didn't see any red flags yet, and he's already showed he can effectively forecheck. Kind of hard to judge individually when Habs are coming off of 2 blowout games (NYR and STL) recently. Offensively he's gotten great looks (a couple posts already too). Chemistry takes a while to develop, and considering his first stint he was paired with Monahan (and again, looked good) before being traded, I'd give him more games before passing judgment on his chemistry with Newhook and Armia. Although, with Armia being a puck hog, I'd rather see Newhook and Roy playing with Gallagher instead.
And if we are going off of merit, Roy deserves to be in the top 9 over half the forward group.... Pearson, Armia, Anderson, Gallagher (although he might have found a bit of chemistry with Gignac) are dead weight. Pezz and Gignac are 4th liners.</div></div>
I think you know we are watching the same games,
I've seen flashes, but not enough. He is quick to give the puck up in the NHL, perhaps better linemates would help and I'm not saying he's been bad but he has not shown anything to me that suggests he is a lock in MTL's top 9 next season.
If MTL has any aspirations of making playoffs next season (which is what the hypothetical acquisition of Zegras and Toffoli would indicate), you can't rely on Roy to be a fixture in the top 9. Look at what Stankoven and Bourque are doing in Texas, and they aren't playing for Dallas (Stankoven making his debut).
Montreal needs to raise their standards, they can't keep forcing guys into roles they aren't ready for. I'd prefer to see Roy dominate in laval and make him earn it.
Edit: On merit, Roy is not above anyone in this top 9, and he isn't gonna play 4th Line. Dach, Dvorak, Zegras, Newhook have all missed time with an injury this season. An injury will happen next season and Roy will get the call.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blazingbat11</b></div><div> I still think at least one of Armia, Dvorak, Anderson, or Gallagher would need to be moved out in order to bring in another vet. Habs still need to make space for younger players. Speaking of....there's no way Roy isn't on the team moving forward, especially next season. Only way he gets sent down now, is to bolster Laval's playoff push. Other than that, Roy easily slots into the Habs middle 6.</div></div>
Armia is probably the only one out of that bunch that is tradeable. I disagree regarding Roy, he hasn't shown that he is ready for the NHL yet and even in Laval he has not really dominated outside of his hot start. Looks like he has more to learn, particularly defensively, I think he needs more seasoning.
5 forward contracts are up after next season, that seems like the ideal time to integrate Roy into the lineup.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Black61</b></div><div>You want another C then proceed to trade for a guy who cant play C at the nhl level. Lol no way the habs give up a top 10 pick for zegras</div></div>
I don't want another C, I want another C option. Should Dach get re-injured Zegras can move to C. Why is it out of the question that Zegras is worth a top 10 pick? He was literally a top 10 pick in his own draft and in a redraft he would be top 5. You hope guys like Demidov, Catton, Eiserman etc. hit like Zegras.
By the way, Zegras has put up similar results 5v5 playing C as Suzuki so...

Quibbling over salary retention as rumored / reported by insiders is insane to me.
