Yes he does hurt us we are over the cap without LTIR and that means all performances bonuses are penalties to the cap the following season. We also can't accumulate extra cap space throughout the season. At some point that contract has to go.

Fair offer for Harris, probably a deal unless MTL has plans for trading another defenseman.

Yeah I don't expect St. Louis to trade Thomas, but I'm not trading Caufield for him either why would MTL do that?
Caufield point a per game 0.721, Thomas at the similar stage of his career 0.680. So at a similar age Caufield is the better point producer and he is the better goal scorer too, which is more of a need for MTL.
Caufield's all around game has improved this season as well, as evidenced by his 49.67 xGF% compared to Thomas' 49.22 xGF% this season. They are quite similar in that department.
I wouldn't trade Caufield for Thomas straight up, and I'm not arguing against Blues fans who feel Thomas is untouchable as well for them - just pointing out that it makes absolutely no sense.

Caufield is for sure a better player this season even though his goal scoring has taken a bit of a hit. I think he will find his shot again, and when he does he will take his game to another level.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div> Habs fans have to get over expecting Lane Hutson to be the next Adam Fox or Cale Makar or Quinn Hughes or Luke Hughes. He's not. In fact, it's already clear that he's not. Why is it in fact clear that Hutson is not the next Adam Fox, Cale Makar, Quinn Hughes or Luke Hughes? I dont get the Luke Hughes comparison - they really arent that similar. Makar I would say is athletically on another level compared to Hutson. However, its quite possible that Hutson could become the next Quinn Hughes or Adam Fox. I don't think you could say either of these players would have definitively become what they are today when they were 19 or 20 years old, yeah its crazy to say Hutson is the next Q. Hughes (or Slafkovsky is the next Rantanen) - until one day it isn't so crazy anymore. Why do you think Krug is a good comparison for Hutson when Krug was never even a ppg player in college?
I have tempered expectations regarding Hutson, I don't even know if he'll start in the NHL next season, there is no rush. But I wouldn't bet against him on becoming an elite offensive defenseman in the NHL one day.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>You're wrong.
If there's one Montreal prospect who's going to disappoint, it's odds-on to be Lane Hutson because of how you Habs guys have overhyped him. I'd be willing to bet that he won't be in the top 3 contenders for the Calder Trophy when he breaks into the NHL.</div></div>
I mean, he can't be "wrong" it's just an opinion. Objectively speaking though, what Hutson is doing at the NCAA level is more impressive than what Zellweger did in junior.
Using an NHLe model, the NCAA is .194 compared to the WHL which is .141... using that conversion:
Hutson Projected WHL: 194 pts in 110 GP
Zellweger Actual WHL: 158 pts in 110 GP
I know NHLe is not perfect, but it contextualizes things a little bit. While I won't say definitively that Hutson is better than Zellweger I certainly wouldn't be making the argument that Zellweger is better than Hutson, and the argument that Zellweger is more valuable because he has 12 games of NHL experience holds no weight... that means nothing other than Zellweger was drafted a year earlier.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>habitantlecolon</b></div><div>1st that team needs stability and better wingers. We also need to win puck draw more and keep the possession. Actual puck production won't offer much next season if we can't get the puck from the start, or give better wingers to our centers, or if those centers can't win a draw. It is plain stupid (and I use minimal wording here) to express player quality only by point production or salary cap ... you can do better.</div></div>
MTL is 8th in the league in faceoff percentage and they are still a bottom team in the league. Evans 51.6% is actually slightly below their team average of 52% so I don't know what you're going on about him for regarding faceoffs. MTL could resign Monahan who is on pace for 56 pts in 82 games and has a FO% of 55% and he could be their 3C... there is absolutely no argument for handing Evans the 3C role next season.
I'm not hating on the player, he plays his role fine... he's just not a 3C... WE can do better.

Look, Evans is on pace for 27 pts in 82 games this season. He has often been the 3C on this team this year filling in for injuries to Dach, Dvorak, and Newhook. That's good 4C production, but not 3C.
Montreal needs to be adding forwards to get better, promoting a 4C to 3C is not going to help at all.

Unrealistic 24-25
I know you already said this is unrealistic, but...
- That draft pick trade with Arizona, MTL needs quality not quantity and their scouts feel that this draft isn't as deep outside the first round, which is interesting.
- Harris deal, maybe.
- They just retained 50% on Allen to trade him because they decided to keep Primeau. They aren't trading him.
- Zegras trade is too rich, you used Debrincat as a comparable, yet added in Barron which is equivalent to a late 1st. Yes it's a deal Anaheim probably can't refuse, but I think there are other alternatives for MTL that don't involve them overpaying while trading their top 10 pick.
- There is no need to pay to dump Dvorak, even with the hypothetical signings you made you would be cap compliant with him on the roster. Why throw away a 2nd round pick?
- I think Stamkos, Fluery, Monahan and Xhekaj all get more on their contracts.

This, LA will not be paying for MTL to take Dubois that is a pipe dream. LA is probably experiencing some buyers regret (I thought it was on overpay at the time for a player they didn't even need), so if MTL presents a reasonable offer for LA to recoup some of their lost assets I could see a scenario where they might decide to cut their losses before his NMC kicks in, but they certainly won't be paying to get rid of him.

I think it's more likely that Dubois bounces back and is the 60+ point center with size that LA envisioned when they traded for him... in which case MTL would have missed there one and only opportunity to acquire him. In the scenario you put forth, if LA is still looking to move Dubois in 2 years there is not a chance MTL would be interested. It's now (this offseason) or never.

Same, PLD without giving up a 1st seems like a worthy gamble. Fans on here were all over him a year ago, now that he has had a tough 1st year in LA they are scared to take a chance on him and hope he bounces back? He will be 26, signed through 32 so that's a good fit for the habs window of contention. St. Louis, Anderson, and Savard also know the player well.

I just learned today that Monahan and Toffoli were ex teammates in junior. Would be neat to bring them both back to MTL, but they'd probably want 4 year deals I think.
Marchessault would also be good, but I'm not sure how realistic it is to get him over Toffoli.

The NHL needs to change these things
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonh514</b></div><div>1) The mix of a play-in and equal odds for the bottom 12 teams makes the most sense to me. We cannot have Chicago and San Jose get rewarded for intentionally losing. The draw needs to be removed.
2) The media circus is important to draw attention to the game which is losing ground to MLS in the US. We need to grow the game and that means more personality in the superstar players and more media. GMs and owners should understand that.
3) Your suggestion punishes teams too harshly and hurts players who are genuinely injured. A waiting period is more fair. The 1st round of the playoffs is by far the most competitive, so teams would be discouraged enough from sheltering their star players until round 2.
4) Seems like there is evidence this does not matter to the players.</div></div>
1. I really like this. Equal odds is fair if it's only 12 teams missing the playoffs and it eliminates the purpose of sucking on purpose. Basically all 12 of those teams would have a 8.333% chance of winning the lottery... which is a longshot so even a team in 12th would rather push for the play in for a chance at playoff hockey. It's really stupid that every position in the standing gives you better odds at winning the lottery because you're already giving yourself a better draft postion. It creates a desire for tanking all the way from last to 16th... like MTL for example, finishing 5th last would be preferable to 7th or 8th... not necessarily because of a huge jump between 5th and 7th position in the draft but because of better lottery odds. The last place team would still have a good pick even if they don't win the lottery, whether that is 2nd, 3rd or 4th or whatever.
2. Can't argue with that. The fans love it.
3. It is harsh, but the way I see it that's the breaks. If a team isn't able to be cap compliant before the playoffs, that's on management of that team. Another solution could just be that teams have to be cap compliant with their 20 man roster for every game of the playoffs.
4. Yep, if it gets to be a real problem one day the NHL might need to get involved with player taxes. For example, players would file for "tax returns" (money lost due to tax in a high state) through the NHL and maybe get some reimbursement through revenue sharing or something. I don't know, something might be necessary one day.

The NHL needs to change these things
1) Easier said than done. I think one of the issues is that it's harder than ever to make the playoffs, so it's just a better strategy to tank for good players than to be stuck in no man's land. The play in series you mentioned at the end is the best solution in my opinion, and I like Elliot's idea: A 2 game series, a tie after 2 games goes to overtime. You would then have 20 teams playing additional hockey, the list of lottery teams would be shortened from 16 to 12.
2) No comment, offersheets are kind of taboo between GM's anyways.
3) Agreed, they need to do something regarding the LTIR loophole in the playoffs. In my opinion the solution is rather easy, if a player isn't activated off of LTIR (as a paper transaction whether he is healthy or not) then he isn't eligible to play in the playoffs. I mean even beer league hockey usually has a rule where a player has to play a minimum amount of games to be eligible for playoffs, Kucherov sat out an entire season and then lit up the playoffs straight from game 1... an absolute joke that was. Particularly because without that LTIR cap space TB would not have been able to retain Sergachev, Cirelli, Cernak etc without making other moves.
4) I also agree, but how could you do it? You can't alter a player's salary depending on where they play. You could give bonus cap space to teams with more income tax - but is that really the NHL's problem or is it just something that city needs to deal with?

Firstly, why would they trade Caufield when they just locked him up to an 8 year contract?
Second, even if you call him and Dvorsky a wash, Barron for an ECHL'r?
Edit: There is probably a way of acquiring Dvorsky without trading Caufield too... like why even put Caufield in this deal other than to start a controversial discussion? Why not this years top 10 pick plus a prospect?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonh514</b></div><div>In the same post TDL media availability he was asked about acquisition and he said he cannot wait to be a buyer, but that the team isn't there right now.
Personally while I like Berkley Catton (reminds me of Suzuki, but a little smaller), if they draft him or another player at that level he's not gonna help this team be competitive for 3-4 years. I would totally trade that pick for immediate help (if not a Zegras, someone of that caliber) and then go and overpay for a Reinhart.
I really don't buy that this team is not able to make the playoffs and that we need a full 5 years to complete the rebuild.</div></div>
That makes sense, I probably didn't see the full quote then because obviously they aren't ready to be buyer's 'right now' but in the offseason that could change. They have lots of cap space, too many prospects, and a surplus of defenceman so an acquisition of a top 6 forward seems very likely to me.

I missed when Hughes said it was not the time, I think he said he something along the lines of he is sick of being a seller at the TDL every year (Suzuki agreed)... to me that means we should expect improvements to be made this offseason.
My laval lineup looks like this:
Farrell - Gignac - Perreault
Heineman - Andersson - Mesar
Kidney - Beck - Simoneau
Tuch - Davidson - Nadeau*
Condotta / Legare
*Trade Norlinder for Nadeau?
Hutson - Mailloux
Trudeau - Reinbacher
Engstrom - Fluery*
Tourigny
*Trade Ylonen for Fluery?
Farrell is a trade chip for me personally, if he goes you could bump someone up the lineup. Also any injuries in the organization (NHL or AHL) means the depth in Laval gets effected, so guys will be moving up unto bigger roles at times throughout the year.
I seen you had Beck as 1C and personally I think we need to pump the breaks. Mysak, Davidson, Kidney, etc. were all scorers in junior too and adjusting to the pro level wasn't as easy as it seemed.

Personally, I think MTL needs more depth, rather than trading depth to bring AHL'rs up. Injuries happen, <strong><em>especially </em></strong> to this team.
Slafkovsky - Suzuki - Caufield
Newhook* - Top6Forward - Dach*
Roy - Dvorak* - Armia
RHP* - Evans - Anderson
Pezzetta - Gallagher
Matheson - Barron
Guhle - Kovacevic
Xhekaj* - Savard*
Harris*
* indicates players that have missed significant time with an injury this season. You need to have depth in Laval to replace these guys and Laval needs players too so they aren't wiped out when MTL takes them.
I would not have Andersson and Gignac penciled in as forwards to make the team out of training camp next season. MTL should probably try to clear one spot on defence though, Struble Hutson and Mailloux are probably all ready for NHL action. I would not carry 8 defenseman as you did, young guys are better off playing significant roles in Laval than being 7th or 8th defenseman.
Edit: Plus you want a competitive training camp, you want guys challenging for jobs.
