makes no sense for San Jose. They can just draft a RD this year and wait for him to develop, theres no rush

I agree Kunin has been bad offensively, but overall I really like his game. I agree, should be bottom 6 and would be really good there.
Yeah not too competitive so far, but they should get better (can't get much worse) especially with injured guys coming back</div></div>
Desperately waiting on coutures return so we aren't the worst team in history lol

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Oleg</b></div><div>Duclair needs a message sent to him if he doesn’t pick it up very soon. He simply hasn’t been good enough. A couple games in the bottom six when Granlund is back might get him more assertive because he and Hoffman have been way too passive.</div></div>
The whole teams been bad; I wouldn’t necessarily highlight Duclair. He’s a somewhat one dimensional player and never has been much more than just a good offensive winger (it’s not bad to be a good offensive winger) - who got traded to the leagues worst team from a cup contender. I’d let him stew for a few more games see if he gets a bounce and gets going.
I’d give him a few more

Lines To Get WIn 1
There’s zero chance Quinn does the right stuff.
I mean a line of
Eklund - Hertl - Zadina/ Zetterlund
Is by far our best possible line and hasn’t really be considered.
Next it should be
Duclair - Granlund - Zadina/ Zetterlund
(Duclairs not gonna wake up by being put in our bottom 6)
I’d actually like to see
Bordeleau - Strum - Labanc
Peterson - Carpenter - Kunin
Or scratch Peterson but keep Carpenter for a few

Not So Overreactions from Game1
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rob32sjsharks</b></div><div>I was more positive on Hoffman than you, thought he looked decent but yea I want to see that shot more!
The Dulcair Barbi Bordeleau line looked off, but I want to give them 1-2 more games. 100%! Agree with an Eklund Zadina Hertl line!
Next game I want to see Labanc swap in for Smtih,
And on D I want to see Embersom and or Knyzhov slide in. We should rotate players in an out of the lineup IMO. I feel it’s not healthy to sit players multiple games in a row unless they are hurt or slumping!</div></div>
Knyzhov should be playing over Vlasic but I think it would cause internal distress and locker room issues (I could see Hertl and Couture being hounded over questions about Vlasic being scratched and Vlasic would more then guaranteed voice disapproval with the Media).
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SJSGM</b></div><div>Agree w/ a lot of what you said...
Eklund needs a better shooter on his line. gave a lot of solid feeds to Kunin who couldn't even get his stick on the puck, let alone finish it. I actually didn't hate Kunin's game, though. Skill level might not have been there but effort was definitely there. First game back so hopefully he improves. Agree w/ Thrun/Bordeleau as well.
I don't think Duclair had a good game, though. Him and Barabanov on that line just weren't noticeable, Bordeleau might have been that line's best player. Zetterlund's compete looked really good, and I liked that he was just shooting and trying to get pucks on net. Really frustrating when guys take forever to look for the perfect chance and end up without even a shot.
Agree w/ Hoffman but didn't think Rutta was that bad. Not really noticeable, but for him, a defensive-defenseman, that's not that bad.
I thought Smith was good. High effort, especially on the forecheck, and just high pace and physicality. Exactly what I'd want on the 4th line.
I like your top line, but think Kunin needs to get bumped down. Will still get good toi on the 3rd line, but not top 6 (at least for now).
I would also keep Thrun w/ Rutta cause I just think Rutta is a lot better of a player and you want good players with Thrun to help him develop.
I would run ...
Eklund-Hertl-Zadina
Hoffman-Granlund-Barabanov
Duclair-Bordeleau-Kunin
Smith-Sturm-Zetterlund
Ferraro-Benning
Thrun-Rutta
Vlasic-Burroughs
Kahkonen</div></div>
I think Kunin had a good game but he just whiffed what like 7 times? He could tied or put the Sharks ahead but he never quite struck. So if Eklund stays with him and Granlund I wouldn’t be bothered but Kunin has to finish the grade A scoring chances hes being fed. He was 0-5(to 7) and that can’t be come regular.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>poeticentropy</b></div><div>I'll be that guy that disagrees with Eklund Hertl Zadina. Eklund looked smothered, gave up the puck from losing battles, and was forced to ditch the puck a lot. He needs some time to build chemistry with someone else. Not sure its best to put him on 1st line at this point over other reclamation project vets or Barbie</div></div>
While Eklund did get smothered, he was playing the leagues biggest and arguably best D core/ team (couple guys out but the knights still keep their size and work level). Eklund was also the only player on his line driving play and getting pucks and succeeded in PP entries. He’s not big yet he worked hard and drove play and the two bigger players in Granlund and Kunin got fed off Eklund. I think he handled it great. Granlund and Kunin had good games; but I don’t see them as long term Sharks. Eklund should build chemistry with:
- Long term players
- players who can finish
- good players to build his confidence and teach him
Who else is better than the top line?
Hertl can finish, create, lead, and is long term. Zadina looked greater, can create, and looks like long term if he keeps this up. Eklund would immediately fit in - he’s a play creator. Hertl can create and score and be physical, and retrieve pucks as well to ease the workload of Eklund.
Overall.
Eklund - Hertl - Zadina
Bords/ Couture/ Someone - Couture/ Bords/ Smith - Someone
Someone/ Bords - Smith/ Bords - Someone
Is the current core of SJS imo.

My Lines for Opening Night
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SJSGM</b></div><div>I think Eklund and Bordeleau should be split up, though, at least to start. Both smaller guys trying to establish themselves, so maybe start with more veteran guys.
Don't think realistically Vlasic is scratched but I think it makes the most sense.
Don't hate the Burroughs signing. Maybe hard to find room, but he's a good bottom pair guy. Seems like a decent leader, plays well physically and defensively. Also can bury his full contract so really no downside.</div></div>
If we were a playoff cusp kind of team I.e. Detroit Ottawa Buffalo. Burroughs cheap deal and adequate play plus the grit and physicality would be huge for a 6th/ 7th D guy. But the sharks have bad D and need his spot to try and find future guys. I don’t hate him just don’t think he was the right guy at this time.
Agree with the take on Classic (that’s always my typo for his name and it works cause he’s old lol) but yea I just don’t see how we scratch him.
I do think Eklund and Bordeleau could hold their own and maybe add Zetterlund or Kunin for the grit and net front presence could work. But to start yea I see them split up to protect them. But maybe by next year or the year after I could see Eklund Bordeleau and maybe Musty like we saw in the preseason!

My Lines for Opening Night
I am 100% in agreement with your line combos! My only thought is I really feel like Eklund and Bordeleau together! They had chemestry! Same so far with Duclair and Barabanov and Hertl and Zadina. Mixing in Hoffman Granlund and Kunin to mix and match would be nice! It’s way easier once Couture comes back though.
The D I can’t agree more…. But I don’t see how you scratch Vlasic to start the season. (Though I want to!) Maybe after a handful of games, but last year he wasn’t bad so unless he regresses again this year I think Quinn is forced to play him. But to me Knyzhov Embersom and Thrun have to play this year! Thrun I have a feeling is a long term top 4 D for us but with Embersom and Knyzhov we have to see if they are guys you build with or move on from. Personally I feel Knyzhov is a better D than Vlasic and maybe even Ferraro and Embersom could be the best RD we have on the roster right now.
Next year I don’t see how Thrun and Mukhamadulin aren’t playing every night and if the sharks do anything in FA it would be to pick up a RD like Pesce. Or someone who is a top 4 with some offensive ability. So this is the year for Embersom and Knyzhov to shine or move on.
Still don’t know why we signed Burroughs to be honest especially to 3 year deal.

Lindblom got waived, as you said, but you have him on the fourth line lol
Also, Emberson was decent but I really wouldn't lose any sleep over losing him to waivers. I'd rather lose him than Knyzhov.
Edit: I will add that Knyzov would have a better chance of clearing given his cap hit though.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SJSGM</b></div><div>??</div></div>
Total NHL contracts per team = 50 (including two-way contracts and NHL contracts in the minors), players who meet the following three conditions do not count to this limit:
1. The player is 18 or 19 years of age.
2. Is in a junior or European league, and
3. who have not played 11 NHL games the current season.

Backlund and Duclair
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SJSGM</b></div><div>yeah I agree, if retention is the difference between a 2nd and a 1st then yeah, better to do that than just get a 4th or something for Labanc/Hoffman w/ retention. I would just doubt that 1.5 in retention would make up a big difference like that.</div></div>
I reconsidered what I said before and having a 3rd team facilitate the trade by retaining 1.5M would probably only cost a 4th or 5th round pick. Forgoing those types of picks aren't a deal breaker.
The retention might be crucial for getting a deal done with a team like the Bolts or Canes.
Of course this all hinges on how the players perform through the year.

I think you're right about using the retention spot strategically to facilitate trades. But, I would rather watch Labanc and Hoffman walk as UFAs because their current AAVs make them untradable if it means we can get as close to a 1st rounder for either Duclair or Barabanov with retention. I think one high draft pick in the 20s-30s is worth more than a few mid-range picks that we could get by retaining on Labanc or Hoffman and trading Duclair/Barabanov at their actual cap hit.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SJSGM</b></div><div>yeah definitely agree, main reason for the question is for a lot of prospects it's hard to find many stats and +/- is one of the ones I can find</div></div>
Well I’d argue that’s because stats aren’t good for judging prospects, their development curve isn’t close to finished, to judge a prospect, you’d want to watch how they play ( or read/listen someone else talk about how they play )

+/- is really only good when comparing vs players on the same team and even then, ice time and linemates should be taken into account too, simply put, there are better stats than +/- to use
