it's July 31 and he still hasn't signed. How many teams can afford to pay him that? I think he is worth $5M per but not sure what he will actually get.

Edmonton blows it all up
clearly this is an attempt at humor. If chiarelli were still GM heck some of these would even be possible trades. Thankfully he isn't.
Now Minnesota, if you want to hire an experienced GM this time around, you've already got a guy in that organization who is ready. Just give pistol pete another chance, this time he will get it right.

Trades with EDM and TB
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>oilsince95</b></div><div>I agree, from an Oilers perspective. The Oilers would covet a young 3rd liner who can play wing and center right now. I could see this happening.</div></div>
I get why edmonton would be interested, but Zacha has topped out at 25 points. Is that really middle six centre production? Does he even play much centre? For the record, JP did play centre in Finland, but he is a winger
Also isn't that 3rd in 2020 the conditional in the neal trade?

Zucker
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>oilsince95</b></div><div>Pretty sure WPG would want Nurse back, which, compared to the Zucker trade proposed here, would probably make for a worse result for the Oilers.
McD already has the perfect winger in Drai, but of course it would be nice to split them up. However, if Zucker would play better with Nuge, then Nuge has a great winger that can finally play with him.
Ehlers would be amazing, but I really think Nurse is who WPG wants in that scenario.</div></div>
I think i trade nurse for ehlers now and try to sign a jake gardiner for 3 years or so to bridge gap with prospects. Nurse is going to cost more than he's worth in a year so it's preventing a future mistake in my opinion my making the move this year. Broberg, Jones, Samorukov one should be top 4 capable within 3 years when gardiner deal is done and i think there isn't much drop off between gardiner and nurse right now, so the trade/signing makes edmonton much better.

Trades with EDM and TB
Do you really need the picks to balance out Zacha and JP? I don't think you do. Both are in similar spots, JP a year younger. It's a classic NJ/EDM one for one deal. Those always work out great for EDM right..... right?

Holland and Yzerman walk into a bar

Sure, but how much of that was direction from the Mr Illitch to keep the playoff streak going? Was 2 decades plus of success not enough? Is the team not in a better spot now than it was 3 years ago?
You may think he's not a top 10 GM which is fine, but he isn't the worst in the league by a long shot. He isn't even close to the worst in canada. Bad GMs tend to get fired within 5 years, they may be rehired, but usually they don't last 5 years in any market. how long was he in detroit?

The Caleb Jones trade doesn't work either. you can find a stop gap third pair fairly easily without giving up your only NHL ready (now) D prospect.

The guy just traded milan lucic and his 10,000 lb anchor of a contract for a player who may bounce back and be top 6, or who can easily be bought out. I am not saying he's sam pollock, but he isn't peter chiarelli either. he's a good GM

i mean it clears the cap space which is nice, but the oilers need forwards and you've traded 5 lol. even if they are mostly bottom 6, that's a lot of turnover and not a lot of FAs available that would be upgrades. i would assume they would stand pat instead

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. For one, Drai plays the true centre position more than connor. he also usually lines up for the critical faceoffs. Connor is more a rover than anything but good job good effort. There is no way Kotkaniemi would get 50 goals and 100 points even playing with connor. just stop.

His shooting percentage was also 15% which won't be sustainable. His career average tends to be around the 9-10% mark which would have had him around 16 goals. he had a good year, but he hasn't shown what his established level of play is yet, certainly not that of a 30 goal scorer. He probably peaks out around 25 goals and 50 points. i am not paying him that contract AND giving up a first for that.

Bingo. i don't want lucic's contract on this team as much as anybody, but given how stacked the top end of the 2020 draft appears to be, and with the oilers likely not in the playoffs, that is a lottery pick i am unwilling to move. A lucic deal can be assessed next offseason. heck his back may see him have to retire ala hossa

VGKMTL trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>1 star. You really haven't improved the team much (if at all), Gusev is undersized and unproven, while Lekhonen isn't a top-6 player. Yet you've sent out 2 good prospects (1 VERY good prospect) and 4 picks in addition to 2 players. Lose / lose / lose.</div></div>
Ya that's how i read it. Don't rob tomorrow to make incremental improvements today. Trading Samoroukov just to get rid of russell isn't a worthwhile endeavour at this point since it will take quite a bit for the oilers to be a playoff team this year. I would sooner sign a bunch of 1 year forwards and see who makes it. Burn off another year on some bad contracts and come next offseason there will be way more flexibility. Someone will be interested in russell on a 1 year deal. It means another year of pain but that was inevitable when the oilers kept chiarelli into last offseason.
