Ladd Retirement
I really wish people would stop thinking Mayfields on his way out. He may very well be, but I doubt it. He's a pretty damn good defenseman on a bargain contract and ridding ourselves of him doesn't help our cap situation very much. Leddy on the other hand would clear up 5.5 million in cap space.

Cooper said it himself they only asked for paper work, that was it. I'm watching my game at the moment but just do a google or youtube search on his interview.

Nobody's denying Kucherov had surgery, what people are doubting is the time line. It's pretty big red flag when he comes back the same day the salary cap no longer exists. Another red flag is the fact that he was skating a month before he came back, not just light skating but full practices. Which is why there wasn't an ounce of rust on him since day one. Argue all you want that he's just that good you're kidding yourself anyone that hasn't played all year will have a bit of rust to his game. Which is why people are only saying that he was more than ready to come back before the play offs started and should have been activated.
The NHL said they investigated and found that everything was with in the rules, but all the NHL did was look at paper work they couldn't be bothered to send their own doctors in there to get a second opinion. If they had there wouldn't be any doubt about any of this.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>just because Marchand likes to mix it up and play physical does not mean he has a similar skillset/style of play. Palmieri is a goal scorer with average skating and below average passing ability. Marchand has elite 4 way mobility and has no weaknesses in his game - every part of his game is elite. It's pretty funny that you still can't grasp that superstars take longer to decline because they do so many things well at a high level.
This year Palmieri was on pace for 33 pts over an 82 game season - the guy is already on the decline, it's actually pretty easy to predict Palmieri's future :tearsofjoy - Andrew Ladd 2.0</div></div>
I had this huge reply ready for you, but you know what it's just not worth it anymore. Banging my head against the wall for 20 minutes straight would be more fun. Enjoy the game.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>islanders15</b></div><div>There are exceptions to the rule in every sport, Brady still great, Lebron still great. Giving Palmieri a long term deal would be a massive mistake, I think you can get away with 4 million for 3, which <a href="/users/isles777" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@isles777</a> disagrees with. He'd be an idiot to sign that deal anyway. But 5-6 years, 5-6 million per, you're looking at a player that's unmovable and unplayable for the last 2-3 years of that deal. I'm extremely skeptical of what Lee will be in 2-3 years, especially after the knee injury.</div></div>
I agree with that, I never said he should get a long term deal. I said I disagreed that his career is ending next year because he turns 31 which is what isles said.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>Marchand's style of play isn't close to Palmeri's - Marchand plays a finesse game and is elite across the board - he's one of the best passers in the league as well as one of the best snipers. He uses his high Iq and anticipatory instincts to make the players around him better. You keep bringing up character but it's not about that. Superstars take longer to decline, there's a reason why guys like Patrick Kane , Kopitar, Crosby, Ovechkin, Marchand are able to produce at a high level into their mid 30's - Palmieri will be a bottom 6 caliber player in the next few years because 99% of the time that's what happens to players like him.</div></div>
Does Marchand like to drive to net and sacrifice his body to score a goal...yes he does...so does Palmeiri
Does Marchand like to throw his weight around and get physical every once in awhile..yes he does...so does Palmeiri
Is Marchand a pretty good defensive player...yes he is...so is Palmeiri
They play a vary similar style of game just because you don't see it means very little to me at all. I love how you can predict the future of some one when you have no clue what's going to happen in the next 3 or 4 years...<strong>none</strong>. I'm willing to bet you were one of those guys standing out on the street corner with a sign that said the worlds going to end on 21/12. I'll let you in on a secret the Mayans were wrong. <div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>islanders15</b></div><div>If you're labeling Brad Marchand as a character guy instead of a superstar that's hysterical. from 2016/17 - 2019/2020 season he was top 11 or better in the Hart race every year. Yea he's one of their leaders and yea hes a character guy but thats not what makes him Brad Marchand. Patrice Bergeron is a character guy, so is Crosby. But theyre world class hockey players and using Brad Marchand to validate paying Kyle Palmieri would be the quickest way to lose your job. If you give Palmieri a long term deal it's likely gonna be in the ballpark of Marchand's 6.1 number, and i dont think Palmieri's character is gonna be enough to make them look like equals.
Lee, Clutter, Martin, Pageau, Bailey. If theyre back (Greene, Cizikas) this team doesn't need another character guy making 6 million a year.</div></div>
I think you misread the original post. He was saying that because of Palmeiri's style of play his career was almost up. I then stated that Marchand plays the same type of style and he seems to be doing just fine at 33. A character guy to me is a guy is a guy that brings it every single night not just with skill but with grit and heart by playing hard every game. Just because he's a super star doesn't mean he's any less a character guy. Players are allowed to be both. Palmeiri may not be a superstar in this league, but he brings it every night and plays hard. I just find it hypocritical to say his career will end early because he's not Marchand.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>you're grasping at straws lol - Elite players face slower age related decline , I thought that was common sense. This is more about style of play than character, but go off I guess. Most players that have a skillset similar to palmieri fall off a cliff by the time theyre 31, 32 years old. You don't even need analytics, all it takes is a simple hockeydb search.</div></div>
Dude, you're flip flopping all over the place and I'm not sure you know what a character guy actually is, you go from grit to goal scorer to god knows what's next. It sounds to me like you're saying all players decline with age and are just looking for an argument since no one can argue with that. It happens they "all" do. But, I have better things to do than bang my head against a wall today so have a good one man.

Can you give me a list of 5 players over the last 5 years of non superstars that profile like those guys that have been productive into their mid 30's? You can't. There'smaybe 1 or 2 of them.</div></div>
There's only one or two of them because according to you if they're still able to do it they're superstars and no longer character guys. The task is pretty much set up to fail. So no I guess I can't.

Fortunately for him, he's shooting 30% in the playoffs (which is obviously not sustainable) and he's going to get rewarded for it in free agency.</div></div>

I love how you brought in analytics into this - People like yourself think that analytics is about skill over grit, it's substance over style. I'll take a good player who is gritty over skilled player who gets out shot and outscored. You clearly don't know what aging curves are and over 90% of players that profile like the Palmieri's , ladds and Neals of the hockey world usually fall off of a cliff in their early 30s.
BTW Vegas is 100% in non analytics but you're not ready for that conversation yet.</div></div>
Brad Marchand is a character guy are you seriously trying to tell me one of the dirtiest players in the league isn't? Just because he plays 1st line hockey doesn't mean he isn't a character guy. I think you're in denial because he proves your point false, but hey you keep going on about players who's careers failed like skill players don't go through the same thing.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>Hoffman has a bad reputation around the league and he is known for not paying attention to coaches/buying into a system. There’s a reason why Florida didn’t bring him back and he was scratched multiple times in St. Louis . He’s one of the worst even strength players in the league, he’s a powerplay specialist. Much different player than palmieri - Palmieri is very similar to guys like gallagher, James Neal, lucic, Andrew Ladd. Character guys who can score goals + play in all situations but but fall off a cliff by the time they’re 31. Palmieri turns 31 in February. That doesn’t stop GMs from making impulse decisions to save their jobs.</div></div>
Why did you focus on character guys that failed? To prove a point? You do know there's character guys out there right now still owning the league right? I'll just drop one name Brad Marchand 33 years old and locked up for the next 4 years. I get you prefer skill players because the numbers line up, but if the playoffs haven't proven to you that skilled players aren't the driving force to the cup there's nothing I can say that'll change your mind. Tampa is the only team left that's a 100% all in on analytics and they had to go 18 million over the cap to achieve it. It's easy to say how great they are, but would they be as great as they are with 18 million dollars less to spend on players, no they wouldn't. They'd have to cut talent somewhere.

If he takes a 1 year deal with the isles, he’s not getting a long term deal the following summer entering his age 32 season. Brendan Gallagher is palmieri s closest comparable, he signed 6.5 x 6 after it was known there would be a flat cap</div></div>
That may be true but Hoffman was looking for a long term 6 million dollar pay day last year and never got it. He ended up signing a one year 4 million dollar deal with St. Louis and it had nothing to do with padding his numbers. He wanted a chance to win and thought St. Louis was it. I don't think anyone expected the Blues to have as bad of a season as they did.

I heard rumors that Palmeiri was looking for a deal closer to 6 million AAV, but so was Hoffman and he never got it. Like Hoffman I can see Palmeiri taking a one year deal to stay with the Islanders at about the same price as Hoffman got but I honestly can't see him taking a 4 year deal.

There is no cap right now and as far as I know that 10% cap increase doesn't kick in until the pre-season. So teams can take on as much salary as they want from now until then they just have to get cap compliant before the season starts. I'm not sure how Columbus pays their players but I know somes pay them monthly, bi-monthly etc. At this point I'm just guessing but he's got like a million dollars left to be paid to him (roughly) He may already have been paid in full by now for all I know. So retaining on him seems kind of pointless when it doesn't affect anything at all. Know what I mean?
