Kochetkov is unknown? He’s clearly going to be the guy next year. Freddie and Raanta aren’t it and I don’t know why either would be brought back. If you want a veteran goalie to split time with the Russian kid why not take one on an expiring deal and get two of our best AHLers for basically nothing? Abruzzese will probably be on our 4th line next season.

I think they’d get a 1st and a 2nd or a 1st and a 3rd with a prospect. If it was without any retention then just a 1st. The only thing hurting his value is he’s a pending UFA.

I don’t think so. While Sandin has been excellent for the Caps, it’s important to remember he wasn’t going to play that same role with the Leafs as long as Rielly is under contract.

Offseason if we get past Tampa
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DefenseFirst</b></div><div>Well ya, but is there any reason to think those health concerns will disappear in the next month?
I totally think the leafs can beat the lightning, but to say they should is just crazy. The lightning should get more respect than that. The last time they lost a series in the eastern conference no one had heard of covid-19.</div></div>
I’m not accepting any excuses for this team losing to them again. Progress has to be made now. If it isn’t happening then major changes need to occur. The excuses for this team are getting out of hand.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DefenseFirst</b></div><div>Just telling you the simple truth, toronto is going to be an underdog in that series. Tampa is just built better, has the experience, and the intangibles.
Another X factor here - can we just admit that Auston matthews doesn’t look the same this year?</div></div>
Auston has had his health issues this year, which aren’t an excuse when it matters most but it’s probably a big part of his less stellar season. Also, he’s coming off an unreal season that he was unlikely to repeat two years in a row. If we do lose to them again like I said major changes need to happen including coaching and front office as well as at least one big name sent packing.

Goaltending is too important to not give up a little more than you might for another position. If the Kings are high on him and wouldn’t want to move him out, then who could be packaged with the 2nd? I’m not asking for a top tier piece of the future but a second alone isn’t quite enough for a starting goaltender.

I don’t love the idea of McMann on the 3rd line but I get the reasoning. I’d rather see Holmberg with Knies worked into the lineup. I’m much more intrigued by who sees the most time in net.

Leafs 23-24
The trade is what it is. I’m not bothered by it one way or another. I am only supporting this kind of quiet off-season if we get past Tampa. It can’t be another “oh we were close”. We’ve had this group together too long and we’ve made some serious upgrades to the roster. It’s time for real progress or changes need to happen.

I just responded to another person who asked this same question. Should doesn’t mean will and I’m not assuming we will win the series. I’m saying if we do win it then stay the course. If we lose again then it’s major surgery time.

This team should be able to get out of the first round. If they don’t then we need to make a coaching and GM change, as well as a couple trades. The excuse that Tampa isn’t a team we should beat really is getting old. We came close last season and this team should be better. If it’s not then it’s time to do some major surgery.

Offseason with Bedard
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>A lot to unpack here.
Edmonton: Why would we trade Dickson for a cap dump in Foegele and Niemelainen who's really a AHL player and a position where we are deep with prospects at?
Vancouver: Myers is a massive cap dump and we are giving up prospects for that? Myers alone will cost Vancouver a 3rd just to move his cap hit, so in your scenario you're giving away players for free.
Minnesota doesn't touch that
Philly: Philips is a good prospect and hawks are rebuilding. There is a zero reason for Philly to move Atkinson and a 3rd for Philips and there is a zero reason for the Hawks to acquire Atkinson unless they can retain half and flip him for more than Philips is worth which about a 2nd rounder.
NJD won't give up that much
Bluegar is not very good. Foligno has no business on a rebuilding team. Ryan Graves for a rebuilding team? Why?
You are missing all the Blackhawks prospects from this list. The intent of the rebuild is also bringing up prospects and getting them used to playing in the NHL without the Hawks caring about wins and losses. Maybe you aren't familiar with all the prospects, but Hawks have a lot of them and a handful will surely be brought up next season instead of plugging in guys like Graves, Myers, Bluegar, and Foligno. Maybe they bring in a couple vets to flip at the TDL, but they are more than likely to do that in positions that don't take away from prospects.</div></div>
If I’m unaware of the readiness of these defenceman I’ll plead ignorance but almost always a defenceman takes a while to break into the league. Korchinski, Allan, and Del Mastro don’t seem to be near NHL ready yet. That’s why I went with adding a guy like Graves who could play a couple years of that deal before being traded for more futures. Chicago went with some prospects in the college system and those kids take time to develop.
The only player I dealt here that I’d have second thoughts on is Ian Mitchell, who looks like he’s ready to see more NHL ice time. I can tell you Joey Anderson is an AHLer. The Leafs are my team and he’s not going to be a piece of the Hawks rebuild. Hillis was a Habs prospect but they seemed content to move on from him and I didn’t think of him as a major or even minor asset. I’d also think of Philips in a similar sense, so sending him to Philly for a player that can be flipped for better futures in picks seems like a smart move. The Devils trade is more about the picks. Blackwood is a player I’m sure they are ready to move on from. Smith is just filler and not making or breaking the trade. You are right to ask for more of Edmonton and I’m sure they could pay more.

Handling Austin and his contract this offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Now, I'm going on record in saying that Matthews will not resign with the Leafs. Not that it's the Leafs fault, but check the definition of UFREEAgent.
Leafs will be a good team next season. They have a choice of going all in with their UFAs...Matthews, Nylander and Brodie, or not comp[eting but getting futures and cap for 2024/25.
Personally, I would like to get futures and free cap instead of Karlsson and Theodore. If Matthews is traded, I could see at the TDL in February 2024. A retained cap is probably affordable by his new team, and the Leafs wouldn't have to take back much cap...maybe just for one season. Then the new team can offer him an eight year contract. I think it's Los Angeles. Kopitar 10m comes off the books in 2024.</div></div>
The problem with that is why would we trade him next spring when it’s likely the team will be in a similar position? Also, prospects aren’t going to help a team win anytime soon. I see a trade more in line with the Tkachuk situation even if it’s this offseason.
